Myna runs speech recognition on your computer; Canonical says your audio is not uploaded or stored. The important qualification is that the first installation and model download require connectivity, and the languages available depend on the specific model you select. Canonical’s October 2026 preview announcement names Parakeet, Whisper and FunASR as supported engines but does not publish a complete, current language list for them.
What “offline” means for Ubuntu dictation
Myna is an optional speech-to-text technology preview for Ubuntu Desktop. It is designed to turn microphone input into text in the application that currently has focus. It is not a general voice assistant, and it does not provide voice-controlled desktop navigation, translation or automatic language detection in its initial scope.

Offline operation starts only after two things have happened:
- Myna itself has been installed.
- The recognition model you intend to use has been downloaded and installed.
Once that preparation is complete, transcription does not need an internet connection. You can disconnect Wi-Fi or unplug Ethernet and dictate, provided the microphone, Myna configuration and model are available locally. The initial setup is different: obtaining the package and model requires network access, and the project does not promise that first-time installation can be completed offline.

Canonical’s current description says speech recognition runs entirely on the machine. The June 2026 project introduction also describes explicit microphone activation, in-memory audio processing and discarded audio rather than uploaded recordings. That means the offline claim concerns transcription; it does not mean Ubuntu can install or update models without a connection.
How Myna dictation works
- Install the preview. The October 2026 announcement describes Myna as an optional preview and uses the
canonical-desktop-team/mynaPPA. The package and installation details may change while the preview is developed. - Download a recognition model. Myna is an integration layer, so you choose an available model or engine rather than receiving one universal language pack.
- Run
myna-config. Use the configuration utility to select the model, microphone and keyboard shortcut exposed by your installation. The exact choices depend on the preview build and installed models. - Focus a text field. Click in a document, message composer, terminal input or other application field where text can be inserted.
- Press the configured shortcut and speak. Myna activates the microphone, performs recognition locally and inserts the resulting text into the focused application.
- Test again without a network. After the model download completes, disable the network and make a short test recording. This confirms that the selected model is local and that no later setup step is still pending.
The preview’s interaction model is deliberate: dictation starts when you explicitly activate it, rather than continuously listening in the background. If you need a voice assistant, wake-word detection or spoken commands to open applications, Myna is not presented as that kind of tool.
Which Ubuntu systems are supported by the current preview?
Canonical’s 12 October 2026 announcement lists the following environment:

That list should not be read as support for every Ubuntu flavor, architecture, desktop environment or X11 session. The announcement does not establish equivalent support on ARM, non-GNOME desktops or Wayland alternatives. Check the current package instructions before changing a production workstation.

Ubuntu 26.04 also should not be described as shipping with Myna already enabled. Ubuntu’s AI wiki says a fresh 26.04 Desktop installation contains no built-in AI tooling; Myna is an optional installation during this preview phase.
What languages does Ubuntu Myna support?
The most accurate answer is model-dependent: Myna can dictate in languages supported by the recognition model selected in your installation. Canonical names Parakeet, Whisper and FunASR as engines that Myna can use, but the October announcement does not provide an exhaustive, per-language catalogue for the model versions offered through the preview.

The project introduction states that language coverage is driven by the underlying model rather than by the integration itself. It also warns that model performance varies substantially by language. A model may technically recognize a language yet produce poorer punctuation, names, dialects or technical terms than it does for another language. Support for a language therefore does not guarantee equal accuracy.
A June 2026 integration specification discusses configurable dictation-language selection and a preference for the desktop display language when a compatible model is available. That specification is an architectural document, not a current catalogue. It explicitly places automatic language detection outside the initial scope, so you should select the intended language or model rather than expect Myna to identify it automatically while you speak.

For a particular language, verify the model shown in your current myna-config installation and consult that model’s contemporaneous documentation. Do not infer that every language associated with a project named “Whisper,” “Parakeet” or “FunASR” is available in the exact package you installed.
How to choose a model when languages overlap
If more than one installed model can handle your language, the relevant decision is not simply the longest language list. Canonical identifies trade-offs among language coverage, recognition quality and hardware requirements; the specification also frames model size, speed and accuracy as competing factors.
- Language and regional variant: Confirm that the model covers the language, script and variant you actually use. A broad language label may not describe equal support for every regional accent.
- Accent and vocabulary: Test names, industry terms, code identifiers and mixed-language phrases that occur in your normal work. Published language support alone cannot predict those results.
- Latency: Larger models can require more computation. A model that is accurate but slow may feel worse for live dictation than a smaller model with acceptable accuracy.
- Memory and processor capacity: Compare the model’s requirements with your computer’s available RAM and CPU performance. Keep other workloads in mind when deciding whether local inference is practical.
- GPU availability: Canonical says a supported NVIDIA GPU may enable a GPU-accelerated engine. Additional accelerator support is described as planned, not as a current guarantee.
No measured ranking of Parakeet, Whisper and FunASR is supplied for this preview, so there is no evidence-based “best” engine for every language or computer. Select using your language, hardware and a short real-world test rather than a universal ranking.

Privacy and data handling
Local inference changes where the audio is processed. Canonical’s stated behavior is that, after the model is downloaded, speech recognition runs on the computer, no internet connection is required for transcription and audio is not uploaded or stored. The project introduction further describes audio as processed in memory and discarded.

This design reduces the need to send dictated content to a remote service, but it does not remove ordinary desktop security concerns. Applications still receive the recognized text because that is Myna’s purpose, and your document or chat program may save it according to its own settings. Keep the microphone muted or revoke access when you are not dictating, especially on a shared workstation.

It stops working when the network is disconnected
Confirm that the recognition model finished downloading before you went offline. If you changed models or removed a package, reconnect briefly, restore a complete local model installation and test again. Myna’s offline promise applies after the necessary models are installed, not to first-time downloads or updates.
No text appears in the application
Click inside an editable text field before pressing the configured shortcut. Myna inserts recognized text into the focused application; it is not a system-wide command interface. Check the selected microphone and shortcut in myna-config, then try a simple text editor to separate Myna configuration from application-specific input restrictions.

Review the selected model and dictation-language setting. Automatic language detection is outside the initial scope, and the desktop display language is only a default when a supported model is available. Install or select a model that explicitly covers the language you need.

Recognition is slow or inaccurate
Compare another available model if your hardware permits it, and test with the vocabulary you actually use. Slow response can indicate that a model is too large for the computer’s CPU or memory; poor results can reflect model coverage, accent variation or domain-specific words. An NVIDIA GPU may help only when the selected engine supports the available hardware.
The installation instructions do not match your system
The announcement describes a preview tied to specific Ubuntu releases, amd64 targets, GNOME and Wayland. If you are using another architecture, desktop or session type, treat compatibility as unconfirmed and consult the current Myna project instructions before forcing packages from the PPA.
What Myna does not promise
- It does not provide one fixed language list independent of the selected model.
- It does not guarantee equal accuracy across languages, accents or specialist vocabulary.
- It does not perform automatic language detection in the initial design.
- It does not act as a voice assistant or provide general desktop control.
- It is not installed by default on a fresh Ubuntu 26.04 Desktop system.
- It does not make initial package and model downloads possible without internet access.
Bottom line
Ubuntu’s Myna preview does support offline voice dictation once its software and recognition model are installed. The audio is processed locally rather than uploaded, but setup and model downloads require connectivity. Language support comes from the selected Parakeet, Whisper, FunASR or other packaged model, not from a single universal Myna list. Because Canonical has not published a complete current language table or comparative accuracy figures, verify the exact model and language in your installation and test it with your own accent and vocabulary before depending on it.
