No. Full uBlock Origin (uBO) is not supported on every browser. The project says it works best on Firefox and supports Firefox on desktop and Android. Full uBO was removed from the Chrome Web Store on August 31, 2026, and the project’s support wiki says the full extension is no longer supported in Safari. If you stay with a Manifest V3 browser, uBlock Origin Lite may be available, but it is a separate extension with meaningful feature and site-compatibility differences.
The practical choice is simple: use Firefox if keeping the full uBO feature set matters most; otherwise install uBlock Origin Lite from your browser’s official distribution channel and evaluate it on the sites and settings you actually use.

What “uBlock Origin works” actually means
People use “works” to mean several different things: the extension installs, advertisements disappear, cosmetic filters hide page elements, anti-ad-block scripts are handled, or existing websites continue working without adjustments. Those outcomes are not interchangeable.

Full uBO is the original extension, with its established filtering engine, dynamic controls, cosmetic filtering behavior and filter-list ecosystem. Its current browser support depends on extension APIs that Chromium-based browsers are moving away from. uBlock Origin Lite is the project’s Manifest V3 version. It uses declarative rules that the browser applies, rather than requiring a continuously running filtering process. That architectural change is why Lite can remain available in browsers that are ending support for Manifest V2, but it also limits which full-uBO behaviors can be reproduced.

The project’s own guidance is therefore not “install Lite everywhere and expect the same result.” Raymond Hill, uBO’s developer, states in the Lite FAQ: “I consider uBO Lite to be too different from uBO to be an automatic replacement.”
Browser-by-browser support in 2026
| Browser or build | Full uBlock Origin | uBlock Origin Lite | What to do |
|---|---|---|---|
| Firefox (desktop and Android) | The project’s strongest supported choice; it says uBO works best on Firefox. | Distributed for Firefox as a separate option. | Choose Firefox when the complete uBO experience is the priority. |
| Chrome | Removed from the Chrome Web Store on August 31, 2026. | Distributed through the Chrome Web Store. | Use Lite if you remain on Chrome, and do not assume it behaves like full uBO. |
| Microsoft Edge | Support is affected by Edge’s transition away from Manifest V2. | Listed through Edge Add-ons. | Check the current Edge release and listing; the consumer transition began in August 2026 and was targeted for completion by the end of 2026. |
| Safari | The project’s support wiki says full uBO is no longer supported. | The Lite release page lists a Safari App Store distribution route. | Use Lite if its current Safari release meets your needs. |
| Brave and other Chromium-based browsers | The project describes Chromium compatibility, but continued availability depends on each browser’s Manifest V2 policy. | Availability varies by browser and its official store. | Confirm the current store listing and browser policy before relying on full uBO. |
| Chrome Canary and Edge Canary | The support wiki does not officially support these builds because breakage is too likely. | Any Lite listing should still be checked against the specific Canary build. | Use a stable browser for dependable blocking. |
These statuses are a snapshot of the project’s documented position in 2026. Browser release channels and extension-store policies can change independently, so a listing that exists today is not a promise of indefinite availability.
Why Chrome and Edge support changed
Chrome and Edge are moving extensions from Manifest V2 to Manifest V3. Full uBO relies on capabilities associated with Manifest V2, while Lite is designed around Manifest V3’s declarative rules. In a declarative model, the browser receives filtering rules and performs the matching itself; the extension cannot use the same always-running filtering process or convert every advanced filter into an equivalent rule.

Microsoft Edge began its consumer transition away from Manifest V2 in August 2026, with a stated goal of completing that transition by the end of 2026. The README also expected enterprise deprecation of Manifest V2 extensions in early 2027. Those are rollout milestones, not guarantees that every Edge installation changes on the same day.

This does not mean Chrome or Edge cannot run any content blocker. It means the original, full uBO build is losing the extension platform it needs. Lite is the project’s alternative for browsers that distribute Manifest V3 extensions.
Full uBO versus uBlock Origin Lite
| Capability or behavior | Full uBlock Origin | uBlock Origin Lite |
|---|---|---|
| Extension model | Uses the original uBO engine and Manifest V2-era capabilities where the browser permits them. | Built on Manifest V3 and declarative filtering rules handled by the browser. |
| Generic cosmetic filtering | Established full-uBO cosmetic filtering behavior. | Not enabled by default, according to the Lite FAQ. |
| Anti-content-blocker handling | Provides the full project feature set where supported. | Generally less effective against anti-content-blocker measures. |
| Preventing website breakage | More of the project’s filtering controls and exception behavior are available. | Generally less effective at minimizing breakage because some filters cannot be converted to declarative rules. |
| Custom filters and external lists | Existing full-uBO workflows remain available on supported browsers. | Custom filters and external filter-list subscriptions became available in June 2026, but this does not make Lite identical to full uBO. |
| Filtering process | Uses the full extension’s active filtering architecture. | Does not require a permanently running filtering process for its declarative rules. |
The practical difference varies by website and configuration. The Lite FAQ warns that it may or may not meet an individual user’s expectations; a person visiting simple, well-behaved sites may notice little change, while someone who depends on advanced cosmetic filters, anti-blocker rules or careful breakage fixes may notice a substantial one.
Which browser should you choose?
Choose Firefox for the full uBO feature set
Firefox is the project’s stated best environment for full uBO, and the project lists desktop and Android availability. Install the extension from Firefox’s official add-on distribution, then confirm that the installed name is “uBlock Origin,” not “uBlock Origin Lite.” If you depend on advanced filtering controls or have built a large custom-filter workflow, changing browsers is the clearest way to preserve that experience.
Stay on Chrome and use Lite when convenience matters more
Chrome users can install uBlock Origin Lite from the Chrome Web Store. This avoids changing browsers, but you should test the sites you care about immediately: news sites, video services, webmail, work dashboards and shopping checkouts can respond differently to declarative filtering. Keep the extension’s settings at their defaults first, then adjust one option at a time so you can identify what changes a site’s behavior.

Use Edge only after checking its current transition state
Edge users should open Edge Add-ons and verify that the current Lite listing is available for their installed stable release. Because the consumer Manifest V2 transition began in August 2026 and was expected to finish by the end of the year, full-uBO behavior may change during ordinary browser updates. Organizations using managed Edge deployments also need to account for the separate enterprise deprecation expectation in early 2027.
Use Safari with realistic expectations
Full uBO is no longer supported in Safari according to the project wiki. The Lite release page lists a Safari App Store route, so Safari users should check that current listing and its compatibility with their macOS or iOS version. Safari Lite should be treated as the available Lite implementation, not as a restored version of full uBO.
Be cautious with Brave and other Chromium browsers
The project documents Chromium compatibility and includes Brave in its support material, but Chromium-derived browsers do not all make identical extension-policy decisions. Verify both the browser’s current Manifest V2 status and the official extension-store listing. A browser that still accepts a full-uBO installation today may change after a browser update.

1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsHow to switch without losing your settings
- Record what you rely on. List the sites where you use custom filters, cosmetic rules, temporary per-site exceptions or other advanced controls. This tells you what to test after changing browsers or extensions.
- Choose the target based on capability. Select Firefox when full uBO is essential. Select Lite when keeping Chrome, Edge or Safari is more important and you can accept the differences described above.
- Install only from the official channel. Use Firefox’s official add-on distribution for Firefox, the Chrome Web Store for Chrome Lite, Edge Add-ons for Edge Lite, or the Safari App Store route identified on the Lite release page. Avoid similarly named extensions from unrelated publishers.
- Disable the old blocker before testing the new one. Running two content blockers together can interfere with privacy and anti-blocker features. The full-uBO README specifically advises against stacking it with another content blocker.
- Test your normal sites. Open the pages and workflows you use most, including sign-in, media playback, downloads and forms. Record whether ads are blocked, page elements are hidden correctly and essential controls still work.
- Restore settings gradually. Add custom filters or external lists one group at a time. If a page breaks, undo the last change or create a narrowly scoped site exception rather than disabling filtering globally.
Why uBlock Origin may appear to stop working
The browser removed or disabled the extension
Check the browser’s extensions page and the official store listing. A missing Chrome listing for full uBO is expected after August 31, 2026, not evidence that your installation is corrupted. On Edge, a browser update during the Manifest V2 transition can change what remains available.

You installed Lite expecting full-uBO behavior
Compare the extension name and settings page. Lite is intentionally different: generic cosmetic filtering is not on by default, some filters cannot be converted to declarative rules, and anti-content-blocker handling is generally weaker. Reconfigure Lite for your needs or move to Firefox if those capabilities are essential.
A website broke after filtering changed
First determine whether the problem appears with default settings or only after custom lists and filters are enabled. Remove the most recent change, reload the page and then add rules back individually. Site-specific results are expected to vary; the project does not promise one universal Lite outcome.
A Canary build behaves unpredictably
Chrome Canary and Edge Canary are not officially supported by the project because the chance of breakage is high. Reproduce the issue in a stable browser before changing filters or reporting an extension problem.
Mobile and tablet considerations
The project says full uBO is available for Firefox on Android. That statement should not be generalized to every mobile browser: mobile browsers often expose a different extension system from their desktop counterparts. Confirm support in the current mobile browser’s official store and in the project’s documentation before promising a desktop-equivalent installation.
Best Value
For Safari, the documented route is the Lite project’s Safari App Store distribution. Treat the operating-system version, Safari release and current store listing as part of the compatibility check.
Should you run more than one content blocker?
Usually, no. The full-uBO README advises against using uBO with another content blocker because a second blocker can interfere with uBO’s privacy protections or anti-blocker features. If you are changing from full uBO to Lite, disable the old extension rather than leaving both active. If a website still fails, troubleshoot the single active blocker and its filter configuration first.
A practical decision rule
- Need full filtering controls, advanced cosmetic rules or the project’s strongest anti-breakage behavior? Use Firefox with full uBO.
- Want to keep Chrome, Edge or Safari and accept different results? Try uBlock Origin Lite through the official distribution channel for that browser.
- Use a Chromium fork or a preview channel? Check current store availability and Manifest V2 policy before depending on full uBO.
- Unsure whether Lite is enough? Test it on your own sites and configuration; the project says the noticeable difference depends on both.
Browser compatibility is now a moving target rather than a permanent list. Recheck the browser’s current release notes and extension store when you install or advise someone else. For readers who specifically want full uBlock Origin, Firefox remains the project-recommended answer; for everyone else, Lite is a viable but deliberately different option.
