No. Turning off Gemini in Chrome is a permission or feature control, not an eraser. It can stop Gemini from using Chrome context in the future, but it does not by itself remove Gemini Apps Activity, Chrome browsing history, temporary account logs, or copies retained under Google’s stated exceptions.
To clean up past records, handle the relevant controls separately: review Gemini Apps Activity in My Activity, delete Chrome history in the browser, and account for retention limits that Google documents. The exact labels and availability can vary by Chrome version, account type and rollout.

What “turning off Gemini in Chrome” changes
Chrome places the feature control under Settings → AI innovations → Gemini in Chrome. Depending on the version and rollout, you may see a permission such as Let Gemini browse for you. Disabling that permission limits or stops future browsing assistance. It is comparable to revoking access for a feature: it governs what the feature can do from that point forward.

If your goal is to prevent new use, the permission is the right control. If your goal is to remove old records, you need the activity and history controls described below.

Because Gemini in Chrome is being rolled out and updated, a setting may be unavailable, have a slightly different name, or be controlled by an administrator. A missing switch does not prove that no data exists; it may indicate a different product version or an account policy.
Four separate controls, four different results
These settings are often described casually as “turning Gemini off,” but they affect different systems.

The practical implication is that no single “off” switch covers every copy. Choose the control based on whether you are stopping future access, changing future saving, removing account activity, or clearing browser history.

What Gemini in Chrome may already have accessed
Google’s Gemini Apps Privacy Hub says Gemini in Chrome can collect and process the content of the current tab and other tabs that you share with it, along with their URLs. If you ask it to find something in Chrome history, relevant history URLs can also be collected. Some page content used to answer a request may not have been visible in the Gemini interface.
When Keep Activity is enabled, information from websites visited with the feature, as well as audio or files you share with Gemini, can be stored in Gemini Apps Activity. Google also says page content is temporarily logged to the Google Account and does not appear in the Gemini Apps Activity list. Therefore, the visible activity list is not a complete inventory of every transient processing record.
This distinction matters when you delete an entry. Removing a visible item from My Activity is evidence that the account activity entry was deleted; it is not a promise that every log, cache, service copy or record in another Google product disappeared at the same moment.

How to stop future use and remove the records you can control
- Disable the Chrome permission. In Chrome, open Settings → AI innovations → Gemini in Chrome. Turn off the relevant permission, such as Let Gemini browse for you. If the menu is absent, check that Chrome is updated and consider whether a work or school administrator controls the setting.
- Review Gemini Apps Activity. Open your Google My Activity controls and select Gemini Apps Activity. Inspect the date range and entries before deleting them. You can remove individual items or use the available date-range deletion option. Deleting this activity addresses the account activity list, not Chrome’s local history.
- Decide whether to turn off Keep Activity. In the Gemini Apps Activity controls, switch off Keep Activity if you do not want future chats to appear there or to be used to train Google’s AI models, unless you send feedback. This is a setting for future interactions, not a substitute for deleting older entries.
- Clear Chrome history separately. In Chrome, open the History page (for example, through the three-dot menu and History), choose Delete browsing data, select the appropriate time range and include browsing history. This removes visited-page records maintained by Chrome for the range you choose. It does not delete Gemini Apps Activity.
- Check other services if the content came from them. A page, file or message may have its own record in another Google service. Deleting Gemini activity does not automatically delete data held by those services; use each service’s own retention and deletion controls.
After completing the steps, allow for normal synchronization and processing time. Google’s documentation describes the controls and exceptions but does not promise instantaneous, universal erasure from every backend system.

What turning off Keep Activity does—and does not do
Google says that when Keep Activity is off, future chats will not appear in Gemini Apps Activity and will not be used to train its AI models unless you submit feedback. However, Google may retain those chats for up to 72 hours for service provision, feedback processing and safety. That short retention period means “not saved in my activity list” is not identical to “never retained anywhere.”
Keep Activity also does not rewrite the past. Chats and website information already saved while the setting was on remain subject to the separate deletion process. If you need to remove them, select the relevant entries in Gemini Apps Activity rather than relying only on the setting change.

Retention exceptions after you delete Gemini activity
Google’s Gemini Apps Privacy Hub, last updated September 24, 2026, describes two important limits:
- Other Google services are separate. Deleting Gemini Apps Activity does not delete data stored in another Google product. A browser history entry, a file in cloud storage, or a record in another service must be handled through that service’s controls.
- Provider-reviewed chats may remain. Google says some chats reviewed by service providers are not deleted when you delete account activity. Copies may be retained for up to three years in a form Google says is not connected to your account.
These are policy-stated retention limits, not a guarantee that every user’s data is kept for the maximum period. They explain why an activity deletion confirmation should not be interpreted as proof of immediate removal from all systems.
Why Chrome history can still show a page after My Activity deletion
Chrome keeps browsing history in the browser profile. My Activity is an account-level record. They can overlap, especially when Chrome synchronization is enabled, but they are not the same database or control surface. Google’s Chrome help guidance explicitly cautions that activity can remain in the browser after it is deleted from My Activity.
For a complete cleanup of a visited-page trail, check both locations. In Chrome’s delete-browsing-data dialog, choose the time range that covers the visit and verify that browsing history is selected. If several devices use the same synchronized Chrome profile, review history on those devices as well; device and sync behavior can vary by account configuration.
Work and school accounts need an administrator check
On a managed Google Workspace account, an organization may administer Gemini availability, activity settings and retention. You might be unable to change Keep Activity, see a retention period, or use the same menus shown for a personal account. An administrator can also apply policies that differ between a managed browser profile and a personal profile on the same computer.
If the setting is locked or missing, ask your organization’s administrator what is retained and which deletion process applies. Do not assume that clearing a personal Chrome profile changes records held under the organization’s account.

Choose the action that matches your privacy goal
- Stop Gemini from using Chrome context in future: disable the Gemini in Chrome permission.
- Prevent future chats from appearing in Gemini Apps Activity: turn off Keep Activity, while recognizing the possible 72-hour service-retention window.
- Remove account activity already listed: delete the applicable Gemini Apps Activity entries in My Activity.
- Remove the browser’s visited-page trail: delete Chrome browsing history for the required time range.
- Address records outside Gemini and Chrome: use the controls of the Google service that holds them.
- Handle an account-policy restriction: contact the administrator for a managed work or school account.
The direct answer remains no: disabling Gemini in Chrome prevents or limits future feature use, but deletion is a separate, multi-location task with documented retention exceptions.
