Battery impact depends on what your phone and apps are doing. Frequent or high-accuracy location requests, especially from apps running in the background, are the clearest potential drain. Wi‑Fi and Bluetooth scanning are separate from the Wi‑Fi and Bluetooth connection switches, so turning off a radio does not necessarily disable every scan used for location. Check Settings > Battery first, then disable the specific feature that is actually consuming power.
What actually uses power?
Android has several different controls that are often described as “location” or “wireless.” They do not all have the same battery cost:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- The device-wide Location switch controls whether location services are available to the system and apps.
- An app’s location permission controls which apps can request your position and whether they can do so in the background.
- Location Accuracy can combine GPS, Wi‑Fi access points, cellular towers and device sensors.
- Wi‑Fi scanning and Bluetooth scanning can operate as location-related services even when the corresponding connection radio is not being used for an active connection.
- The Wi‑Fi and Bluetooth switches control connectivity to networks and accessories.
Because these controls overlap without being identical, “turn off wireless” is not a single battery setting. The useful question is which service is active on your phone, how often it runs and whether you need the function it provides.
Location: the most likely of the three to matter
Why location can consume more battery
Google Android Help explains that, on devices with Google Play services, Location Accuracy uses available Wi‑Fi access points, cellular network towers, GPS and sensor data such as the accelerometer and gyroscope. Combining these signals lets Android estimate position faster and more accurately, particularly indoors or near tall buildings where GPS is obstructed.

Android Developers specifically warn: “Background location usage can significantly impact battery life.” An app that repeatedly asks for a high-accuracy position can activate GPS, Wi‑Fi or cellular inputs and sensors. Navigation, fitness tracking, delivery tracking, geofencing and social apps are common examples of workloads that may make such requests.
That does not mean the master Location switch itself always causes a large drain. The official guidance does not provide a current, universal number for how much battery is saved by switching Location off. A phone that is not receiving frequent requests may show little change, while a phone with a misbehaving background app can show a noticeable difference.
What you lose by disabling Location
Turning Location off can prevent or degrade turn-by-turn navigation, location sharing, geofencing, local weather, emergency features, device-finding functions and apps that tailor results to where you are. Position estimates may be unavailable rather than merely less precise. If you only want to limit one app, changing its permission is usually a narrower intervention than disabling Location for the whole device.
Review app-level access first
- Open Settings and go to Location. On some phones, tap App location permissions or App permissions.
- Review apps listed as having Allowed all the time, Allowed only while in use or a similar permission.
- Change an app that does not need continuous tracking to Allow only while using the app, Ask every time or Don’t allow, depending on the options your Android version provides.
- Open the app’s Location permission details and check whether precise location is required. Choosing approximate location can reduce the detail shared with an app, although it is not a guaranteed battery fix.
Permission labels differ by manufacturer and Android release. The goal is to stop unnecessary background requests without removing location from apps you depend on.

Wi‑Fi: connection radio versus Wi‑Fi scanning
Turning Wi‑Fi off
Switching off Wi‑Fi disconnects the phone from wireless networks and stops it from maintaining those connections. It can help when Wi‑Fi is actively being used, when the phone is repeatedly searching for a network, or when you are trying to extend a critically low charge. The amount saved varies with hardware, signal strength, Android build, network behavior and whether Wi‑Fi was doing any meaningful work.
Official Android guidance does not establish that an idle Wi‑Fi radio always consumes a substantial amount of power, nor does it give a standard percentage saved by disabling it. If your phone has a strong, stable connection and is transferring little data, the difference may be small. If it is in a weak or crowded signal area and continually scans or reconnects, the effect may be larger.
Wi‑Fi scanning is a separate setting
Android exposes Wi‑Fi scanning under location-related settings. Scans can help estimate your position, find nearby networks and support system features even when you are not connected to a Wi‑Fi access point. Therefore, switching off the Wi‑Fi connection does not necessarily switch off Wi‑Fi scanning.

One-click scans. No signup required.
On Android 12 and later, look under a path similar to Settings > Location > Location services > Wi‑Fi scanning. Android 11 and earlier use a different location-services path, and manufacturers may rename the menus. Disable scanning only if you do not rely on nearby-network discovery or the location assistance it provides.

Trade-offs
- Without Wi‑Fi connectivity, the phone uses mobile data for online activity, which may consume more cellular power in areas with a weak signal.
- Turning off Wi‑Fi scanning can reduce one source of location assistance and may make position estimation slower or less precise indoors.
- Known-network auto-connection, wireless calling features or local-device discovery may stop or behave differently.
Bluetooth: usually a usage-dependent decision
Bluetooth connection
Bluetooth is needed for headphones, watches, cars, keyboards, medical devices and other accessories. Google’s Pixel support guidance lists turning Bluetooth off as one possible action when trying to stretch a low battery, but it does not provide a controlled estimate of idle drain. The likely benefit is greatest when the phone is actively connected, transferring data, repeatedly searching or maintaining several accessory links.
If Bluetooth is enabled but no accessory is paired, nearby activity may be limited and the battery change from switching it off can be negligible. Android versions and phone hardware differ, so there is no universal “Bluetooth on costs X percent” rule.
Bluetooth scanning
Bluetooth scanning is separate from the connection switch. Android location settings can allow scans for nearby devices that help with location estimation and discovery. On Android 12 and later, app access to nearby Bluetooth devices also follows newer permission rules; the exact prompts depend on the app and Android version.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesTo review the setting, open a path similar to Settings > Location > Location services > Bluetooth scanning. On older releases, the menu is located elsewhere. Turning scanning off can reduce background discovery, but it may disable or delay features that depend on beacons or nearby-device detection.

Compare the controls before changing them
| Control | What it changes | When a battery effect is most plausible | Functionality you may lose |
|---|---|---|---|
| Device-wide Location | Makes system location available or unavailable | Apps are making frequent or high-accuracy requests | Navigation, sharing, geofencing, location-based services and some security features |
| App location permission | Limits a particular app’s foreground or background access | One app appears repeatedly in location activity | That app’s tracking, automation or local results |
| Location Accuracy | Combines GPS, Wi‑Fi, cellular and sensor data | High-accuracy positioning is being requested often | Faster or more precise estimates, especially indoors |
| Wi‑Fi scanning | Allows nearby-network scans used by location and discovery | Scanning is frequent or unnecessary for your routine | Some location assistance and automatic nearby-network behavior |
| Bluetooth scanning | Allows nearby-device scans separate from a connection | Nearby discovery is active without a feature you use | Beacon and nearby-device discovery |
| Wi‑Fi radio | Connects to wireless networks | The phone is transferring data, searching or reconnecting in weak coverage | Wi‑Fi internet and local-network features |
| Bluetooth radio | Connects to accessories | Accessories are connected, active or repeatedly sought | Audio, wearables, car links and other Bluetooth accessories |
How to find the real drain on your phone
- Open Settings > Battery. The exact label may be Battery usage, Battery and device care or a similar manufacturer-specific menu.
- Choose the usage view covering the recent period shown by your phone. Inspect apps and system services rather than assuming a wireless switch is responsible.
- Tap an app with unusually high background use. Check its background activity, location permission and battery setting.
- Restrict background use or change location access only when the resulting loss of notifications, tracking or synchronization is acceptable.
- After changing one setting, use the phone normally for a comparable period and check Battery again. Changing several toggles at once makes the result impossible to attribute.
Battery readings are estimates and are affected by screen time, mobile signal, temperature, charging habits and recent system updates. Treat them as a way to identify unusually active software, not as a laboratory measurement of one switch.
Practical choices for common situations
You are at home with reliable Wi‑Fi
Keep Wi‑Fi on if you need network access and the connection is stable. Review Wi‑Fi scanning only if you do not use nearby-network discovery or location assistance. Disabling a stable connection may push traffic onto mobile data and save less than expected.
You are traveling and not using accessories
Turn off Bluetooth if you are not using headphones, a watch, a car system or another accessory. If nearby-device discovery is unnecessary, review Bluetooth scanning separately. Re-enable the radio before expecting a paired device to reconnect.
Your battery is critically low
Use the quickest reversible changes first: reduce screen activity, enable your phone’s Battery Saver mode and disable Wi‑Fi or Bluetooth radios you are not using. Google’s Pixel guidance says Battery Saver turns off most location uses; that is Pixel-specific support information, not a guarantee for every Android implementation. If you still need navigation or a medical wearable, keep the required service on and remove less important background activity instead.

One app is draining power in the background
Do not begin by disabling every wireless feature. Inspect that app’s battery and location permissions, update it if an update is available, and restrict background access when its function permits. A high-accuracy request loop can be the cause even while Wi‑Fi and Bluetooth are behaving normally.
What Android versions change
Settings names and locations vary by Android version and manufacturer. Google documents Wi‑Fi and Bluetooth scanning under Location services on Android 12 and higher, while Android 11 and earlier use different paths. Android 12 also changed how apps request Bluetooth-related permissions for nearby devices.
Older Android Help documentation for Android 9.0 and earlier says that the legacy Device only location mode “can estimate your device’s location more slowly and use more battery.” That statement concerns the old location-mode design. It is not a measured percentage and should not be presented as a result for current Android phones.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Why there is no universal battery percentage
Official Android and Google guidance describes mechanisms and practical actions, but it does not provide matched, controlled battery tests for each toggle across current devices. Results depend on the phone’s modem and sensors, Android build, app behavior, network and GPS conditions, signal quality, accessory activity and how often the feature is used.
Consequently, claims such as “turning off Bluetooth saves 10%” or “Wi‑Fi uses no battery when idle” are too broad to apply reliably. The defensible approach is to measure your own usage through Battery settings, change the narrowest control that addresses the problem and keep a record of the functionality you give up.
