Short answer: translating your website can help AI search systems match your pages to people who search in those languages, but translation alone has not been shown to produce a universal increase in recommendations or citations. The practical benefit comes when each translation is a useful, current, crawlable page that meets ordinary search and crawler requirements.
Google says its AI Overviews and AI Mode retrieve information from the Search index and rely on core ranking and quality systems. OpenAI documents a separate crawler, OAI-SearchBot, for surfacing sites in ChatGPT search. Those are eligibility and discovery mechanisms—not promises that a translated page will be recommended.

What “AI recommendations” means in practice
AI products do not generally maintain a simple list of websites that receive a translation bonus. They retrieve pages through their own search, crawling and ranking systems, then decide which sources to cite or mention for a particular question. A translated page can expand the set of language-specific documents available for retrieval, but it still has to be discoverable, relevant, understandable and trustworthy.

What Google’s documentation establishes
AI Overviews and AI Mode use normal Search foundations
Google’s guide to optimizing for generative AI features on Google Search explains that generative features are rooted in Google Search ranking and quality systems. Retrieval-augmented generation first obtains relevant, up-to-date pages from the Search index and then uses that material to compose an answer with links.
A page must be indexed and eligible to receive a normal Search snippet before it can be eligible for those generative features. Google also gives an important qualification: “Just because a page meets all requirements, best practices, and complies with the policies, doesn’t mean that Google will crawl, index, or serve its content.” Translation therefore improves the amount of language-matched material you offer; it does not guarantee crawling, indexing, citation or recommendation.
Google recommends separate, discoverable language URLs
Google’s multilingual and multi-regional site guidance recommends a different URL for each language or regional version. Separate URLs let crawlers find and revisit every variant. Sites that change language dynamically on one URL, or automatically redirect visitors based on inferred language, can prevent Google from discovering all versions.

Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Language pages should be linked so users and crawlers can reach them without relying on a form submission or an invisible script. A visible language selector that lets the visitor choose, rather than forcing an automatic redirect, is usually the safer pattern.
Hreflang describes alternates; it is not a ranking switch
Google’s localized-versions documentation supports reciprocal hreflang annotations in HTML, HTTP headers or XML sitemaps. These annotations tell Google that pages are localized alternatives of one another, helping it present an appropriate version.
Hreflang does not translate content, create a ranking boost or force an AI system to cite a page. Google says it determines the language of a page algorithmically from its visible content, not from hreflang, the HTML lang attribute or the URL alone. Keep the main text, navigation and important labels consistently in the language claimed for that URL.
What OpenAI’s crawler rules mean for ChatGPT search
OpenAI’s Overview of OpenAI Crawlers separates three functions. OAI-SearchBot is used to surface websites in ChatGPT search features. GPTBot may crawl content for potential training use, while ChatGPT-User can fetch pages in response to user requests. These controls are independent.

If a site opts out of OAI-SearchBot, OpenAI states: “Sites that are opted out of OAI-SearchBot will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers, though can still appear as navigational links.” Allowing the crawler removes that specific access barrier, but OpenAI does not promise that permission will produce a citation or recommendation. Relevance, availability and the question being asked still determine whether a page is used.
What the multilingual visibility observations show—and do not show
A report by Pieter Serraris, published by Search Engine Land on August 5, 2026, analyzed language representation across several AI-related datasets. It is useful as directional evidence, not as a controlled experiment proving that translation caused the differences.
| Platform or dataset | Reported observation | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Copilot, 272 Bing properties | Representation index 1.07 | English received a slightly larger citation share than its share of traditional search impressions. The report defines 1.0 as neutral. |
| Google AI, multilingual Belgian and European Search Console panel | Representation index 0.79 | English was somewhat less represented than search demand would suggest; the report interpreted behavior as tracking local language. |
| ChatGPT, 26 multilingual properties | Roughly 2.6 representation index | English had a substantially greater citation share relative to its share of search impressions in this small bot-log sample. |
Copilot sites with an /en/ folder versus sites without one |
892 versus 585 citations per 10,000 impressions; 52% aggregate difference | An observational comparison, not a randomized translation test. Other site characteristics may explain part or all of the gap. |
| Google AI sites with an English folder | 28% aggregate impression lift; 9% median per-site lift after outliers were removed | Results varied by site and do not predict the result for a particular publisher. |
| ChatGPT analysis of sites with an English folder | 122% uplift | Directional only: the OpenAI log panel covered 26 properties and bot identification can miss spoofed or proxied traffic. |
The report also notes that Bing and Google Search Console define AI measurements differently, panels range from single-digit to low-double-digit site counts, and AI citation reporting is still noisy. Its author disclosed a strategy-director role at OMcollective. None of these observations isolates translation quality, language choice or folder structure as the sole cause, so they should not be converted into a promised percentage for your site. How translation can improve your chances indirectly
It creates language-matched source material
If customers ask questions in Spanish, German or another language, a genuinely localized page gives a retrieval system text that directly matches those queries. That can improve topical coverage in that language, especially for product terminology, local regulations, support instructions and other details that are awkward to infer from an untranslated page.
It can satisfy local intent more precisely
Localization is broader than replacing words. Currency, measurements, shipping rules, legal disclosures, opening hours and examples may differ by market. A page that reflects the visitor’s locale is more useful than a literal translation and is less likely to be ignored because it appears irrelevant or misleading.
It expands the pages that ordinary search can index
Google’s model starts with indexed Search content. A translated URL that can be crawled, returns a normal status code and contains substantial visible content gives ordinary Search—and therefore Google’s generative features—another candidate document. That is an expansion of eligible material, not a special AI ranking factor.
How to implement translations for AI and search discovery
- Choose languages from audience evidence. Use customer locations, support requests, sales data and search impressions to select markets. Do not add a language solely because an anecdotal report showed an English effect.
- Give every language a stable URL. Use a consistent directory, subdomain or domain pattern, such as
/en/and/de/. Keep the translated page address stable so crawlers can revisit it and users can share it. - Make the page reachable by links. Link language variants from a visible selector and, where appropriate, from the page itself. Avoid requiring cookies, a form submission or client-side code before the alternate URL appears.
- Keep the visible language consistent. Translate headings, body copy, navigation, metadata and important interface text. Do not label a page as one language while leaving its principal answer in another.
- Add reciprocal hreflang annotations. Every alternate should reference the others, including an appropriate
x-defaultwhen you maintain a neutral selector page. You can place annotations in HTML, HTTP headers or an XML sitemap, as described in Google’s localized-page guidance. - Check crawler access. Confirm that robots rules, authentication, firewalls and server settings do not block Googlebot or OAI-SearchBot from the translated URLs. For ChatGPT search visibility, opting out of OAI-SearchBot prevents inclusion in ChatGPT search answers.
- Translate the pages that answer real questions first. Start with documentation, service pages, pricing explanations and frequently referenced guides. A folder full of machine-translated boilerplate adds URLs without adding useful answers.
- Maintain every version. Update translated prices, policies, product capabilities and safety information when the source changes. Marking a page as current while its localized content is stale can reduce user trust.
- Validate technically. Test status codes, canonical relationships, internal links, sitemap entries, rendering and mobile usability for each language. Inspect representative URLs in the relevant search tools rather than assuming the pattern works sitewide.
Does hreflang help AI search?
It can help Google understand which URLs are related localized versions and select an appropriate result for a user’s language or region. It cannot make an untranslated page multilingual, override Google’s language detection or compel an AI answer to cite your site. Incorrect, one-way or conflicting annotations may simply be ignored.

The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Should you add English pages specifically?
Add English when English-speaking customers are an actual market or when your analytics show meaningful English queries that your current pages cannot satisfy. The OMcollective observations found higher English representation in its ChatGPT sample and differences associated with an /en/ folder, but those findings do not establish that adding English will raise recommendations for every multilingual site.
An English page can also be the wrong investment if your customers primarily use another language and the translation would be incomplete or poorly maintained. Prioritize the language in which the page can provide an accurate, useful answer, then expand based on measured demand.
How to measure whether translation is helping
Measure each locale and platform separately; do not combine unlike metrics into one “AI score.” Establish a baseline before launching a language version and compare a reasonable post-launch period.
- Indexing and crawl health: count indexed translated URLs, crawl errors, blocked resources and the time between publication and discovery.
- Traditional Search demand: track impressions, clicks, click-through rate and queries by language and country.
- AI visibility: where a platform provides a documented metric, record citations or AI impressions by locale. Treat Google Search Console and Bing reporting as different measurements, not interchangeable values.
- Qualified outcomes: monitor engaged visits, leads, purchases, support deflection or other outcomes that matter to the translated market.
- Content quality: review whether visitors reach the intended localized page, encounter stale information or switch back to another language.
Use comparable groups where possible—for example, translated cornerstone pages versus similar pages translated later—and document other changes such as link campaigns, redesigns or new products. Observational before-and-after movement cannot by itself prove that translation caused an AI citation change.
Common failure modes and fixes
| Symptom | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Only one language appears in indexing | Language is changed dynamically on one URL or redirects hide variants | Publish separate, linkable URLs and remove forced language redirects. |
| Translated pages are discovered but rarely useful | Thin boilerplate, untranslated main content or literal wording that misses local intent | Translate the complete answer and localize examples, policies and terminology. |
| Wrong regional page appears | Missing or inconsistent hreflang relationships, canonicals or visible language signals | Make annotations reciprocal, align canonicals and keep each page’s content language consistent. |
| ChatGPT search never shows the site | OAI-SearchBot is blocked or opted out | Review robots and security controls; allow OAI-SearchBot if ChatGPT search inclusion is desired. |
| Traffic rises briefly, then falls | Localized pages became stale or the initial demand was seasonal | Assign an owner, update translations with source changes and evaluate a longer period. |
| Analytics disagree across platforms | Each service samples and defines AI impressions or citations differently | Keep platform reports separate and compare trends within the same platform. |
Bottom line for site owners
Translate your website when it improves access for a real language market and you can maintain the result. Build each version as a complete, crawlable page with its own URL, clear language signals, accurate hreflang relationships and permission for the crawlers whose search products you want to reach. This approach can broaden the queries your content matches, but no available documentation or observation proves that translation alone causes AI systems to recommend a site more often.
