Short answer: Total War: SHOGUN 2 can still launch on some Windows 10 and Windows 11 PCs, but neither modern operating system is certified by the game’s current Steam requirements. Steam lists Windows 7, Vista and XP, while recent Windows 11 player reports are mixed: some users play successfully and others cannot get the launcher or game to start.

An archived Total War requirements page gives broadly similar Windows requirements, but lists 35 GB rather than 32 GB of disk space and still names only XP, Vista and Windows 7. Treat that page as historical corroboration, not a modern compatibility guarantee.

These are specification thresholds, not performance measurements. They do not tell you what frame rate a current laptop or desktop will deliver, how quickly battles will load, or how often the game will crash.
Windows 10 versus Windows 11: what can be established
Windows 10
The available evidence does not provide a controlled Windows 10 test, a supported-version statement, or a representative success rate. A Windows 10 PC that meets or exceeds the old hardware baseline may launch, but that is an inference from individual compatibility rather than an official certification. Your result can still depend on the graphics driver, display mode, Steam installation, mods and configuration files.

Windows 11
Windows 11 reports are explicitly mixed. In a 2024 discussion, one player said the game would not launch after trying multiple remedies. Other participants said it worked for them, while additional replies described problems. Those are individual accounts, not a survey, so they cannot establish a failure percentage, identify one universal cause or guarantee a fix.

Do not interpret one successful report as proof that every Windows 11 system is fine, and do not interpret one failed launch as proof that SHOGUN 2 is universally unplayable. The evidence supports only a system-specific answer.
“Runs” and “runs well” are different questions
There are two separate checks:
- Launch compatibility: Steam opens the game, the launcher completes, and you can reach the menu or a campaign.
- Performance and stability: battles remain responsive, loading is acceptable, graphics render correctly and the game does not crash during extended play.
The available material can describe launch anecdotes and the old published requirements, but it contains no current benchmark or measured reliability study. It therefore cannot support a claim such as “all modern PCs run SHOGUN 2 smoothly,” a guaranteed frame rate, or a Windows 10-versus-11 winner.
Check your PC before troubleshooting
Use the old requirements as a baseline, not as a promise. Before changing files, record your system information and confirm that you have room for the installation.
- Check your Windows edition and whether you are running Windows 10 or Windows 11.
- Note your processor model, installed memory and graphics-card model and driver version.
- Confirm at least 32 GB of free storage for the current Steam listing. The archived requirements page says 35 GB, so leaving additional headroom is sensible.
- Check your display resolution. The listed minimum is 1024×768; the recommended line uses 1280×1024.
- Record whether the failure happens before the launcher, in the launcher, after selecting a graphics API, or after entering a game.
A newer processor or graphics card does not by itself guarantee compatibility. Modern hardware can still encounter an old game’s launcher, rendering path or configuration issue.

A low-risk launch checklist
Work from reversible checks to more involved changes. Stop when the game launches and avoid changing several variables at once, because that makes the cause harder to identify.
- Restart Steam and Windows. Exit Steam completely, restart the PC, then open Steam again. This clears a temporary client or driver state without changing your game files.
- Check the installation files. Use Steam’s game-properties area to run its file-integrity check. Let the process finish, then launch SHOGUN 2 again. Treat this as a diagnostic step, not a guaranteed SHOGUN 2-specific repair.
- Disable mods and custom content temporarily. Remove the variable by starting with a clean, unmodded installation. If the unmodified game starts, re-enable additions one at a time to identify a conflict.
- Identify the exact failure point. Note whether Steam returns immediately to the Play button, whether the launcher opens and closes, whether a DirectX choice changes the result, and whether you see an error message. Different symptoms can have different causes.
- Capture system details. Write down Windows 10 or 11 build, CPU, RAM, graphics card, driver version, monitor resolution and any overlays or custom launch options. This information is more useful to support than “it does not work.”
- Retest after one change. Launch the game after each individual adjustment so you can undo a change that made things worse.
Community discussions mention file verification, mods, configuration files and alternate installation folders, but users report mixed outcomes. None of those suggestions is an official, universal Windows 11 fix.
Configuration-folder workarounds: handle with care
One community report describes a workaround involving a configuration folder. Because this is an anecdotal suggestion rather than a verified support procedure, do not immediately delete folders or game data.

How to interpret common symptoms
Steam returns to the Play button
This confirms that the launch sequence did not complete, but it does not identify the cause. Start with a restart, file verification and a mod-free launch. Then record the Windows version, driver details and any error text before trying deeper changes.
The launcher opens, then closes
Separate a launcher failure from a game-rendering failure. Note whether choosing a different available graphics option changes the behavior, and test with custom content disabled. Do not assume that changing Windows versions will solve it; the evidence does not establish a Windows 10 or 11 universal fix.
The game starts but crashes later
This is a stability problem rather than proof of launch incompatibility. Test an unmodded session, record when the crash occurs and preserve your save files. A game that reaches the campaign can still fail during loading or battles, and the available sources do not provide a measured stability rate.
Graphics look wrong or the game will not use the desired resolution
Compare your chosen display mode with the old listed baselines: 1024×768 minimum and 1280×1024 recommended. Record the graphics card and driver version, because the published requirements specify an old DirectX 9.0c path and do not document how every current driver handles it.

Should you buy new hardware?
Usually, not on the basis of these requirements alone. The listed processor, graphics and memory figures are from an older generation and do not constitute a current performance target. A typical modern PC may already exceed them, while a launch problem can remain because of software, configuration or mods.
Only consider an upgrade after checking the actual bottleneck in your system. The evidence here does not justify telling every Windows 10 or 11 player to replace a CPU, graphics card or memory, and it does not show that new hardware fixes the launcher.
What support can and cannot confirm
The game’s Steam technical-issue support entry is an official support location, but its troubleshooting content was not accessible in the material used for this FAQ. Do not treat a specific repair sequence as officially endorsed unless the support page itself provides it.

Bottom line for Windows 10 and 11 players
Total War: SHOGUN 2 is still a Windows PC game, and some people do run it on Windows 10 or Windows 11. However, Steam’s current listing certifies only Windows 7, Vista and XP, and recent Windows 11 experiences range from successful play to repeated launcher failure. There is no controlled modern benchmark to establish how well it performs across current PCs.
Approach it as a compatibility test for your specific installation: verify the files, remove mods, document the failure point and protect saves before touching configuration folders.
