Not with every TV. The WiiM Bar works when the television can output sound through an HDMI port labeled ARC or eARC. Connect that port to the Bar’s HDMI eARC port, then select the Bar as the TV’s audio output. A regular HDMI socket will not send television audio to the Bar through this connection. If the TV has no ARC/eARC but does have an optical audio output, optical is the documented fallback, although the TV remote cannot change the Bar’s volume over optical.
The compatibility answer in one minute
WiiM’s setup instructions define compatibility by connection type rather than by a universal list of television models. Your TV is a documented match if it provides one of these paths:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- HDMI ARC or eARC: the preferred connection. The TV port must be explicitly marked ARC or eARC, and the cable runs to the WiiM Bar’s HDMI eARC port.
- Optical output: a fallback for a TV without ARC/eARC. The optical cable runs from the TV’s optical output to the Bar’s Optical In.
An unmarked HDMI input or output is not equivalent to ARC. WiiM states that other HDMI ports will not transmit sound to the WiiM Bar. The official documentation describes the required ports, settings and audio formats; it does not publish test results for every television model, firmware version, model year or region. Treat the port and settings check as the compatibility test for your particular set.
Check the TV before you connect anything
Find the correct HDMI socket
Look at the labels beside the TV’s HDMI sockets or in its manual. You need a socket marked HDMI ARC or HDMI eARC. The label may appear as “eARC/ARC” or include the port number, such as “HDMI 2 (ARC).” Only that return-audio port should be connected to the Bar. Plugging into HDMI 1, HDMI 2 or another ordinary input does not make the TV send its internal audio to the soundbar.

If there is no ARC or eARC label
Check for a square optical output, often labeled Optical, Digital Audio Out or TOSLINK. A TV with optical out can use the WiiM Bar’s Optical In even when it has no ARC/eARC. If the set has neither ARC/eARC nor optical audio out, the cited WiiM TV instructions do not document a direct digital-TV connection for that configuration. The Bar also has Line In, but WiiM’s TV-specific guide focuses on HDMI and optical and does not establish Line In as an equivalent digital television-audio path.
Connection options and what each one supports
| Connection | TV requirement | Setup and control | Formats listed by WiiM |
|---|---|---|---|
| HDMI ARC/eARC | HDMI port labeled ARC or eARC | Select the WiiM Bar as audio output, enable HDMI-CEC, and set digital audio to Auto or Pass Through. WiiM prefers Pass Through when both choices are offered. | PCM, Dolby Digital, Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby Atmos, DTS, DTS-HD and DTS:X |
| Optical | Optical audio output | Connect to Optical In, select the Bar as the TV output and choose Optical In on the Bar. The TV remote cannot adjust Bar volume over this connection. | PCM, Dolby Digital, Dolby Digital Plus and DTS |
| Line In | Compatible analog audio source | Line In is an available Bar input, but the TV setup documentation does not describe it as the digital-TV equivalent of ARC or optical. | No TV-specific Line In format list is given in the cited guide. |
The format lists come from WiiM’s input documentation. They should not be read as saying that optical and HDMI eARC have identical capabilities: Dolby Atmos, DTS-HD and DTS:X are listed for HDMI eARC, not for Optical In.

How to set up a TV with HDMI ARC or eARC
- Connect the cable at the TV. Insert one end of an HDMI cable into the socket labeled ARC or eARC. Do not use an ordinary HDMI port for this return-audio connection.
- Connect the Bar. Insert the other end into the WiiM Bar’s HDMI eARC port.
- Turn on both devices. Power on the TV and the Bar and allow the TV to finish detecting the audio device.
- Choose the TV audio output. In the television’s sound or audio-output menu, select the WiiM Bar or the HDMI ARC/eARC output instead of the built-in speakers.
- Enable HDMI-CEC. CEC is the control channel that lets the TV and Bar coordinate power and volume commands. Manufacturers use different names: WiiM cites Samsung Anynet+, LG Simplink and Sony Bravia Sync as examples.
- Set the digital audio format. Choose Auto or Pass Through. WiiM recommends Pass Through when both settings are available because it sends the source format to the Bar rather than having the TV convert it.
- Select the Bar input. If the Bar does not switch automatically, open its source controls and select HDMI eARC.
Menu wording and locations vary by brand, operating system and firmware. A television can have an ARC port but still remain silent if its audio output is left on TV speakers, CEC is disabled or the digital-output mode is incompatible with the selected source.
Using optical when the TV lacks ARC/eARC
Optical is the documented fallback for a non-ARC television with an optical audio output.

- Connect an optical cable from the TV’s optical audio output to the WiiM Bar’s Optical In.
- In the TV’s sound menu, select the optical or external-audio output rather than the internal speakers.
- On the Bar, choose Optical In as the active source.
The important trade-off is control: WiiM says the TV remote cannot adjust the WiiM Bar’s volume through the optical connection. You will need the Bar’s own control method for volume changes. Optical also has the narrower format list shown above; WiiM lists PCM, Dolby Digital, Dolby Digital Plus and DTS for Optical In, while the HDMI eARC list additionally includes Dolby Atmos, DTS-HD and DTS:X.
HDMI ARC versus eARC for a WiiM Bar
The Bar’s port is labeled HDMI eARC, while WiiM’s TV instructions accept a television port labeled ARC or eARC. Therefore, the documented setup does not require the TV to have eARC specifically; a correctly labeled ARC port is also the stated connection path. eARC is useful when the TV offers it and can pass the higher-bandwidth formats listed by WiiM, but do not infer that every TV’s firmware will pass every format merely because the socket has an eARC label. The practical first check remains the same: identify the labeled return-audio port, select it in the TV settings and use Pass Through when available.

Troubleshooting a failed connection
No sound at all
- Verify that the HDMI cable is in the TV’s ARC/eARC socket, not another HDMI port.
- Confirm that ARC/eARC output is enabled in the TV’s audio settings and that the WiiM Bar is selected as the output device.
- Check that the Bar’s active source is HDMI eARC for an HDMI setup or Optical In for an optical setup.
- If the TV offers a digital-format choice, test Pass Through first, then Auto if necessary.
CEC, power or volume commands do not work
Make sure HDMI-CEC is enabled on both devices where the menus provide that option. Look for the manufacturer-specific name rather than a menu item literally called “CEC”; WiiM’s examples are Anynet+, Simplink and Bravia Sync. CEC behavior can vary by model and firmware even when the physical ARC connection is correct.

Audio and video are out of sync
Use the TV’s A/V-sync or audio-delay control. WiiM’s setup guidance gives Sony, LG and Samsung as examples of televisions with such settings, but the exact label and adjustment range differ by model. Change the delay in small increments while playing a program with visible dialogue.

The TV remote appears not to control the Bar
On HDMI, recheck HDMI-CEC. On optical, remote-volume adjustment is not supported according to WiiM, so changing CEC settings will not remove that limitation. Also ensure that the Bar is not blocking the TV’s infrared receiver; WiiM specifically calls out IR-receiver placement in its general Bar setup guidance.
The TV has no ARC/eARC
Use optical if an optical output is present and accept the loss of TV-remote volume control. If the TV has neither documented output, the WiiM instructions supplied here do not establish another direct TV-audio method. Do not assume that any spare HDMI socket can substitute for ARC.
What is and is not guaranteed by the documentation
WiiM’s support pages, modified September 11, July 3 and June 26, 2026, specify ports, settings, input selection and troubleshooting guidance. They do not provide a model-by-model compatibility matrix or a compatibility percentage. Consequently, “works with any TV” is too broad: compatibility is established for TVs implementing the stated ARC/eARC or optical path, but individual behavior can still depend on the television’s firmware, regional variant, audio settings and CEC implementation.

Use the physical-port check and the setup sequence before buying a cable or replacing the soundbar. The cited instructions do not require a premium HDMI cable tier; they simply specify the correct ARC/eARC connection. An optical cable is relevant only to the fallback path.
Optional surround expansion after the TV connection works
TV compatibility does not require additional WiiM speakers. WiiM describes the Bar itself as a 3.0.2-channel product and documents an optional expansion to 5.1.2. That expansion uses one WiiM Bar, one WiiM Sub Pro and two WiiM Sound or Sound Lite devices, or a WiiM Streamer/WiiM Streaming Amplifier arrangement for the surround channels. These are expansion configurations, not prerequisites for connecting a television through ARC/eARC or optical.
Quick Recap
Practical buying decision
- Choose the HDMI setup if your TV has an ARC/eARC-labeled port and you want the broader format list and HDMI-CEC integration.
- Choose optical if the TV lacks ARC/eARC but has optical out, and you can live without TV-remote volume control for the Bar.
- Pause before buying if the TV has neither connection documented above. The WiiM instructions do not support a claim that an ordinary HDMI port or an unspecified adapter will provide TV audio.
