Sony’s battery-life figures, with the conditions attached
Runtime depends heavily on how you use the speaker. The following figures come from Sony’s charging guidance rather than an independent battery test. Treat them as scenario estimates, not a guaranteed duration for every playlist, room or temperature.

Sony’s US product page advertises “20 hour battery life.” The more precise way to read that marketing number is “up to about 20 hours under Sony’s stated conditions,” not 20 hours at concert volume with every feature enabled. The detailed conditions appear in the official charging guide.
Sony also cautions that actual playback time changes with volume, the music being played, surrounding temperature and other settings. Bass-heavy material and cold conditions can therefore produce a shorter session than the headline figure even when the speaker is otherwise functioning normally.

What makes the battery drain faster
Volume is the biggest variable
The contrast between Sony’s approximately 20-hour estimate at volume 16 and approximately two hours at volume 50 shows why a single runtime number can mislead. If you need high output for a large outdoor gathering, plan around the shorter end of the range and keep AC power available when practical.
Lighting consumes additional power
With the same Bluetooth connection, volume and ULT mode, Sony estimates about 12 hours with lighting on versus about 20 hours with it off. Turning the lighting off is the simplest way to prioritize music time when visual effects are not important.
Sound modes and music content matter
The published estimates use ULT1 or ULT2. Different sound settings, demanding low-frequency content and frequent level changes can alter consumption. Sony does not provide a universal hour figure for every combination, so avoid converting the 20-hour estimate into a promise for another mode or source.

Battery Care trades capacity for longevity
Battery Care mode limits the maximum charge to approximately 90 percent to help extend battery life over the long term. Sony says playback time is shorter in this mode. It is useful when the speaker usually stays near an outlet or is charged frequently, but disable it when you need the longest possible single session.

Sony’s Sound Connect app includes STAMINA, a setting intended to reduce battery consumption and extend playback. The reviewed guidance does not state a fixed number of extra hours, so treat the benefit as usage-dependent rather than adding a guaranteed amount to the runtime table.
How to prepare it for an unplugged event
- Inspect the rear connection. Make sure the AC cord is fully inserted and the protective cap is not trapping dirt or moisture.
- Charge with the speaker off. For an empty battery, allow approximately three hours for a full charge. If you are in a hurry, use the ten-minute top-up as a short-term boost; its approximately 100-minute result assumes Sony’s moderate-volume, lights-off conditions.
- Choose your runtime priorities. Turn lighting off and consider STAMINA if music duration matters more than visual effects. Leave Battery Care disabled for maximum single-use capacity.
- Pair the playback device over Bluetooth. Sony’s published estimates assume a Bluetooth connection, so a different input or unusually active wireless setup may not match those figures.
- Test at the intended volume. A brief rehearsal at the level you expect to use will reveal whether the session is closer to the moderate-volume estimate or the high-output, short-runtime case.
- Disconnect and secure the cap. Remove the AC cord, close the rear cap firmly, and confirm the speaker powers on before carrying it away from the outlet.
Is it genuinely portable?
“Portable” describes the ability to move the speaker and operate it without a cable; it does not mean lightweight. Sony lists a mass of approximately 12.7 kg (28 lb), including the battery, and dimensions of approximately 358 × 534 × 280 mm (14.1 × 21.1 × 11.1 in) in its specifications.

Those measurements make the ULT TOWER 5 practical for moving from a living room to a garden, loading into a car for an event, or repositioning it in a venue. They also make carrying distance, stairs, door widths and the availability of a second person important decisions. A charged battery removes the need to place it beside an outlet, but it does not remove the physical effort of moving a 12.7-kilogram tower.
The battery is not documented as user-replaceable, and the official material reviewed here does not establish support for an external battery pack. Plan locations and charging access around the built-in battery rather than expecting a hot-swappable spare.
Charging, storage and battery aging
Keep it topped up for occasional use
If the speaker is used only for parties or seasonal events, Sony recommends charging the battery once every six months during long storage. This prevents the unit from sitting indefinitely at a deeply discharged state.

Expect capacity to decline over time
The built-in lithium-ion battery gradually loses capacity as it ages and is used. A shorter session after years of service is therefore not automatically a fault. If playback becomes significantly shorter even after a full charge, Sony advises contacting Sony support or a dealer; the notes on charging explain this care guidance.
Protect the charging connection
Before connecting power, keep the rear connector and cap clean and dry. After charging, disconnect the cord and close the cap securely to preserve the stated water-resistance protection. Do not assume water resistance means the open connector can be exposed to rain.
What to do when runtime does not match expectations
The speaker shuts down much earlier than expected
- Check whether the lighting is on; Sony’s estimate falls from about 20 hours to about 12 hours at the same moderate volume when lights are enabled.
- Check the volume level. Operation near level 50 is associated with Sony’s approximately two-hour estimate under the specified lighting and Bluetooth conditions.
- Check Battery Care. A charge limited to approximately 90 percent starts with less stored energy.
- Consider temperature and the music program. Sony identifies both as factors that change actual playback time.
- Recharge fully with the speaker powered off, then compare runtime at a moderate, consistent setting.
The battery appears not to charge
- Verify the AC cord is seated at the rear socket and that the wall outlet works.
- Inspect the protective cap and connector for moisture or debris; allow moisture to dry before charging.
- Leave the speaker connected for the full charge period rather than judging from a brief top-up.
- If a full charge still produces significantly reduced runtime, follow Sony’s advice to contact support or a dealer instead of attempting to open the cabinet.
You need music while power is limited
Disable lighting, use a moderate volume, and enable STAMINA in Sound Connect. These actions reduce demand, but Sony does not publish a guaranteed STAMINA runtime, so keep a charging option available for a long or high-volume event.
