Permanent unlock versus starting selection
“Unlock” can mean several different things in games, so it helps to separate them:
Permanent account unlock
A permanent unlock is a one-time accomplishment recorded for your account or profile. Typical examples include finishing a quest, earning an achievement, reaching a level, or completing a challenge that makes a character type available in every future save. No cited announcement describes such a requirement for the sapient tree.
Character-creation choice
A starting choice is available whenever you meet the product and version requirements. You select the identity while creating a new character, and the choice applies to that run. The tree is announced in this category as a Mutated Plant stock.

In-run mutation or transformation
A mutation or transformation is something a character acquires after a run has begun. That mechanic could exist separately from the tree stock, but the announcement evidence does not say that you must obtain a plant-related mutation before the tree becomes playable. Do not treat a later mutation system as the access gate for the announced starting tree.

- Own the base game. Confirm that Caves of Qud is in the same Steam library or account on which you plan to play.
- Install or acquire Diaspora when it becomes available. The expansion is announced for Steam Early Access on December 9, 2026. If you are checking before release, the option cannot be expected to appear in the live game.
- Update the game. Let Steam finish the base-game and expansion updates. An older branch or an incomplete installation may not expose newer character stocks.
- Start a new character. The tree is described as a creation-time identity, so begin from the new-game or new-character command rather than loading an existing save.
- Open the genotype or stock selector. Look for the Mutated Plant category or an equivalent list of starting identities. The labels may be revised as the interface develops.
- Select the tree entry and continue setup. Choose any remaining options the game presents, then launch the run.
If the tree appears in the selector, that is the relevant access test. You should not need to finish an introductory quest or raise a character to a particular level before choosing it.

The announcement language calls the new choices “Mutated Animal and Mutated Plant starting genotypes,” while the tree is commonly described as a plant stock. Those terms describe the character-creation framework rather than a claim that the tree is an item or a temporary spell. The important point for access is that the tree is offered at the start of a run within that framework.
This does not establish every mechanical detail. The available material does not specify the tree’s attributes, skills, equipment, movement rules, needs, resistances, or how its abilities interact with existing systems. It also does not establish whether a tree-created character can later acquire other mutations or forms. Those are gameplay questions separate from whether the initial identity is locked.

What “not progression-gated” means for your saves
If the announced model remains in place, access should be tied to product ownership and the installed build, not to one particular save file. You would not have to preserve a successful character, carry an achievement into a new campaign, or repeat a quest on every account. Starting a fresh run should present the same eligible stock whenever the expansion is installed and active.
That is an interpretation of the announced starting-character structure, not a promise about account services. The sources do not document a separate profile flag, cloud-save entitlement, or cross-platform license rule. If Steam shows the expansion as owned and installed but the option is missing, treat that as a version, installation, or interface problem first rather than assuming a secret achievement is required.

Diaspora is announced for Steam Early Access on December 9, 2026, with development expected to continue through 2027. Early Access status matters because character-creation categories, names, balance, and progression rules can be revised between builds. A future patch could move the tree, alter how ownership is checked, or change the way plant identities are presented.

At present, no cited source reports a later one-time achievement that permanently unlocks the tree for every account. That absence is different from proof that no future unlock could ever be added. If the tree option is missing
Work through these checks in order:
- Check the date. Before the announced December 9, 2026 Early Access release, there may be no playable Diaspora option at all.

- Create a new run. Existing characters and saves may not gain new creation choices retroactively. Return to the new-character flow.
- Inspect the plant category. The entry may be grouped under Mutated Plant or another label rather than displayed as a top-level “Sapient Tree” button.
- Read the current in-game notes. If a later build introduces a different requirement, the game’s current release notes or character-creation text should take precedence over older descriptions.
If all of those checks pass and the option remains absent, the most accurate conclusion is that the current build has changed the announced behavior or has not enabled the content yet. The available announcement does not justify inventing a hidden quest or achievement as the explanation.
