Does the Samsung HW-Q990H Work With Your TV, Console, and Streaming Devices?

Yes. The Samsung HW-Q990H can connect to a television, game console and HDMI streaming device through HDMI eARC and HDMI 2.1. Samsung Australia lists video pass-through up to 4K at 120 Hz, while Samsung Canada describes eARC and HDMI 2.1 connections for sending sound from the TV and its connected devices. The exact result still depends on your TV’s HDMI ports, audio-passthrough settings, the source device and the route you choose.

Compatibility at a glance

The HW-Q990H is an 11.1.4-channel soundbar system. It is designed to sit between your display and source devices, or to receive audio from the TV over eARC. The table shows what is established by Samsung’s 2026 regional specifications and what must be checked on your equipment.

Device or feature Does it work? What determines the result
TV with HDMI eARC Yes Connect the soundbar’s eARC connection to the TV’s eARC port and enable the TV’s eARC/external-audio setting.
TV with HDMI ARC only Often usable, but with limitations ARC has less bandwidth than eARC, so the TV may not pass every high-bandwidth audio format.
Console Yes Connect it either to the TV or to a soundbar HDMI input. TV bandwidth, VRR/ALLM support and audio passthrough affect the best route.
Streaming box or stick Yes The service, title, subscription, device audio setting, TV passthrough and HDMI route determine whether Dolby Atmos is delivered.
4K at 120 Hz video Supported through the soundbar’s stated pass-through capability Samsung Australia specifies pass-through up to 4K at 120 Hz; the console, TV port and selected mode must also support it.
Wireless Dolby Atmos Samsung-TV feature, not universal Samsung lists compatible 2022–2026 Samsung TVs, with model and regional exceptions.
Q-Symphony Samsung-TV feature Requires a compatible Samsung TV; it is not needed for ordinary HDMI soundbar operation.

Samsung’s Canadian product page says the HW-Q990H uses “HDMI 2.1 and HDMI eARC technology, allowing smooth sound delivery from your TV and its connected devices.” That describes the hardware connection, not a guarantee that every television or application will output every format.

Choose the right HDMI layout

There are two practical wired arrangements. Neither is automatically better: the TV’s capabilities and the formats you need decide which one to use.

Route 1: Sources into the TV, sound returned over eARC

Connect the soundbar to the television’s HDMI port labeled eARC (or ARC if eARC is unavailable). Plug the console and streaming box into the TV’s HDMI inputs. The television displays the picture and sends the source audio back to the HW-Q990H.

  • This is convenient when the TV has enough HDMI inputs and supports the video modes you want.
  • Every source’s audio must be passed through by the TV. Some televisions transcode, limit or omit certain formats even when the source itself supports them.
  • eARC is preferable to ARC when you want the TV to return higher-bandwidth sound formats.

Route 2: Sources into the soundbar, video passed to the TV

Connect a console or streaming device to one of the HW-Q990H’s HDMI inputs. Connect the soundbar’s HDMI output/eARC connection to the TV. The soundbar receives the audio and passes the video onward.

Samsung Q-Series Soundbar (HW-Q990H, 2026 Model), 11.1.4ch, Subwoofer + Rear Speaker

  • SMART INTEGRATION: Connect and control everything with our soundbar that integrates your favorite smart services, like Alexa built-in*, Googlecast**, Airplay 2*** and more.
  • This can avoid a TV that does not pass a desired audio format over ARC/eARC.
  • The soundbar becomes part of the video chain, so its stated pass-through limits and the TV’s input capabilities both matter.
  • For a 4K 120 Hz console, use an HDMI 2.1-capable path and confirm that the TV input accepts 4K at 120 Hz with the features you intend to use.

Use certified, suitable HDMI cables of the required length. Replacing a damaged or too-short cable can solve an intermittent connection, but an expensive “upgrade” cable is not a prerequisite established by Samsung’s specifications.

Connecting the HW-Q990H to a TV

  1. Locate the television’s HDMI socket labeled eARC or ARC. Do not use an ordinary HDMI input for the soundbar’s return connection.
  2. Connect that TV port to the HW-Q990H HDMI port designated for eARC/TV output.
  3. Turn on the soundbar and select the HDMI/eARC input if it does not switch automatically.
  4. In the TV’s sound menu, choose an external HDMI audio system or receiver as the output device. Enable eARC when the menu provides a separate eARC toggle.
  5. Set the TV’s digital-audio output to a pass-through or bitstream mode when you want the TV to forward the source format rather than decode it first. Menu names differ by manufacturer.
  6. Play a TV app and an HDMI source to verify that both produce sound. If one source is silent, troubleshoot that source’s output setting separately.

An optical or ARC fallback may be possible on some televisions, but the cited HW-Q990H pages do not establish that every fallback preserves the same formats or branded features as eARC. Treat eARC as the primary connection when the TV provides it.

Using a PS5, Xbox or another console

Samsung Australia specifies HDMI 2.1 video pass-through up to 4K at 120 Hz. That is the soundbar’s published ceiling; it is not a certification of every console-and-TV combination. The console, television input, cable and display settings must all support the mode.

When the TV has a suitable HDMI 2.1 input

  1. Connect the console directly to a TV HDMI 2.1 input that supports the desired resolution and refresh rate.
  2. Connect the TV’s eARC port to the HW-Q990H.
  3. On the console, select 4K resolution and 120 Hz only after the TV reports those options as available.
  4. Enable the TV’s game mode, VRR or ALLM options if you use them, then verify that the audio output remains eARC/bitstream as appropriate.

This layout gives the TV direct control of gaming features. Its success depends on the TV passing the console’s audio format through eARC.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When the TV has limited audio passthrough

  1. Connect the console to an HDMI input on the HW-Q990H.
  2. Connect the soundbar’s HDMI output to the TV’s eARC/ARC input.
  3. Select the soundbar input used by the console.
  4. Set the console to a video mode accepted by both the soundbar’s pass-through and the TV input.
  5. Check the TV for 4K 120 Hz, HDR, VRR and ALLM status. If one feature disappears, test the console directly on the TV to identify whether the limitation is in the soundbar path or the display.

Some televisions reserve only one HDMI 2.1 socket for 4K 120 Hz or VRR. If that socket is occupied by another device, connecting the console to the soundbar may be the practical alternative, provided the complete chain still reports the desired mode.

Connecting a streaming box or stick

An HDMI streaming device can connect to the TV or to a soundbar HDMI input using the same two layouts. Physical connection alone does not guarantee Dolby Atmos. The application, subscription tier, specific title, device output setting and TV passthrough all participate in the result.

Streaming device connected to the TV

  1. Connect the box or stick to a TV HDMI input.
  2. Connect the TV eARC port to the HW-Q990H.
  3. Set the streaming device’s audio output to an automatic, bitstream or Dolby-capable mode rather than forcing stereo.
  4. Enable eARC and pass-through on the TV.
  5. Test a title that explicitly lists Dolby Atmos and confirm the service plan includes that format.

Streaming device connected to the soundbar

  1. Connect the device to a HW-Q990H HDMI input.
  2. Connect the soundbar’s HDMI output to the TV’s eARC/ARC port.
  3. Choose the corresponding soundbar input and select the device’s automatic or Dolby-capable audio mode.
  4. Check the TV for the expected video resolution and HDR mode, since the soundbar now sits in the video path.

If an Atmos badge does not appear, check the title and subscription first, then the streaming device’s audio setting, the TV’s passthrough mode and the HDMI route. Samsung’s published pages do not provide an exhaustive compatibility list for every streaming box, stick or service.

Samsung-only enhancements: wireless Dolby Atmos and Q-Symphony

Basic HDMI audio does not require a Samsung television. Samsung’s branded enhancements have separate conditions.

Wireless Dolby Atmos

Samsung’s regional pages describe wireless Dolby Atmos compatibility with selected Samsung TVs from 2022 through 2026. The Australian listing excludes the 32-inch The Frame model, and other regions identify additional model-specific conditions. These statements apply to compatible Samsung televisions, not to every TV brand.

If your TV is not an eligible Samsung model, connect the HW-Q990H by HDMI eARC/ARC instead. The soundbar can still receive TV and source audio through that wired path.

Q-Symphony

Q-Symphony combines compatible Samsung TV speakers with the soundbar. It is an optional Samsung-TV feature, not a requirement for surround sound, eARC or console pass-through. Confirm that the exact TV model and the soundbar’s regional variant list Q-Symphony before expecting the combined-speaker mode.

What to check when something does not work

No sound from the TV

  • Confirm that the cable runs from the TV’s eARC/ARC port to the soundbar’s TV/eARC port.
  • Select the external HDMI audio output in the TV menu and enable eARC.
  • Power-cycle the TV and soundbar after changing HDMI-control or eARC settings.
  • Test a built-in TV app. If it works but an external source does not, inspect that source’s audio output and the TV’s passthrough setting.

Sound works, but Dolby Atmos is missing

  • Verify that the title and service plan include Atmos.
  • Set the source to automatic, bitstream or Dolby output instead of PCM stereo, where available.
  • Use eARC rather than ARC when the TV offers both.
  • Try connecting the source to the soundbar if the TV is known to restrict passthrough, or test the source directly through the TV to isolate the limitation.

4K 120 Hz is unavailable

  • Confirm that the console, cable and TV HDMI input each support 4K at 120 Hz.
  • Try the TV’s designated HDMI 2.1 port.
  • If the console is routed through the soundbar, verify that the TV still reports 120 Hz, HDR and any required VRR/ALLM mode.
  • Test a direct console-to-TV connection. If that restores the mode, the TV’s input or the chosen soundbar route is the limiting link.

The soundbar does not switch inputs

Use the soundbar remote or app to select the HDMI input manually, then check HDMI-CEC settings on the TV and source. CEC menu names vary, and enabling it is separate from enabling eARC.

Regional model and feature checks

The HW-Q990H name identifies Samsung’s 2026 Q-series system, but the suffix differs by market. Samsung Canada lists the HW-Q990H-ZC, while Samsung Australia lists the HW-Q990H-XY. Before installation, compare your suffix with the local specifications for HDMI inputs, pass-through wording and Samsung-TV feature eligibility.

For the Canadian specifications, see Samsung’s HW-Q990H product page. For the Australian pass-through and compatibility details, see Samsung Australia’s HW-Q990H listing. Samsung’s 2026 launch context is also described in its US Newsroom announcement.

Bottom line for common setups

  • TV plus built-in apps: use HDMI eARC and enable the TV’s external-audio and passthrough settings.
  • PS5 or Xbox at 4K 120 Hz: use a complete HDMI 2.1 path, then choose direct-to-TV eARC or soundbar pass-through according to the TV’s audio and gaming support.
  • Streaming box: either HDMI route can work, but Atmos depends on the service, title, plan, device settings and TV passthrough.
  • Non-Samsung TV: wired HDMI audio is supported; wireless Dolby Atmos and Q-Symphony require eligible Samsung-TV models.
