Sky and satellite operator SES announced a multi-year capacity agreement on 30 September 2026 covering the UK and Republic of Ireland. SES says the agreement runs into the next decade, with no exact end date disclosed.
What the SES deal means for Sky Q
The agreement renews Sky’s use of SES satellite capacity at 28.2° East for direct-to-home television services in the UK and Republic of Ireland. SES says the multi-year term runs “into the next decade,” extending the published capacity horizon beyond 2029. That is a meaningful indication that satellite will remain part of Sky’s TV distribution for years to come, alongside internet-delivered products. SES’s announcement does not state the new contract’s precise expiry date, financial value or transponder count.

The agreement extends a Sky–SES relationship dating to 1988. Sky Group COO Nick Herm said: “As we give customers more choice in how they access Sky, satellite continues to play an important role in how we deliver our services to customers across the UK and Ireland.” The statement signals that satellite remains part of Sky’s distribution mix; it is not a promise that Sky Q will remain available indefinitely.

How long will Sky Q continue?
The public announcement establishes a broad horizon, not a shutdown date. Industry coverage interprets the renewal as taking the relationship into the 2030s, beyond the previously published capacity horizon, but SES has not published an exact end year. Broadband TV News provides that interpretation; it should not be mistaken for a precise contractual term.
#1 Best Overall
- Plug-In Design - Battery powered receiver with learn function has a 20 foot range and can learn up to (2) additional Skytech remotes and also allows manual control of fireplace with On/Remote/Off settings; black and red 18 gauge standard wires connect to a solenoid valve
- Safe Operation - Built-in thermostat recognizes whenever the ambient temperature reaches 130 °F and automatically shuts the power off to the appliance, preventing damage from excessive heat
- Solenoid Switch - Receiver outputs up to 6.3 Volts of DC power to operate a latching solenoid (unit will not work with millivolt systems)
- Includes - Receiver box, batteries, wires with connectors, and instruction manual
- Receiver Box Only - works with the SKY-MRCK, SKY-MRCK-TH, SKY-CON, and SKY-CON-TH remote controls to provide wireless control of a gas heating fireplace with the simple click of a button
The previous renewal is useful context, but its dates should not be applied to the new contract. In October 2024, SES said that agreement covered multiple transponders with capacity expirations through 2029 and extended backup services through the end of 2027. Those were terms of the 2024 arrangement, not details announced for the 2026 deal. SES’s 2024 release also explicitly connected that renewal to satellite channels for Sky Q subscribers across the UK and Republic of Ireland.
So the deal makes an imminent end to satellite delivery less likely, but it does not establish a guaranteed service duration for each Sky Q customer or commit Sky to a new generation of Sky Q hardware.

Does the deal mean Sky is stopping its move to streaming?
No such change was announced. The evidence points to satellite and internet delivery continuing side by side. In 2024, Sky described its “much-loved Sky Q satellite platform” alongside its IP products Glass and Stream. Sky’s statement at the time and the 2026 SES announcement both support continued satellite use, but neither announces a halt to Sky’s IP services or a customer migration plan.

The SES agreement does not require Sky Q customers to buy equipment, replace a dish or switch services. Sky’s support information describes switching as a customer-activated change: Sky says it will not turn off an existing Sky Q or Sky+ service until the customer activates Sky Stream. That is guidance about the switching process, not a deal-specific guarantee of indefinite Sky Q availability. See Sky’s switching-to-Sky-Stream help page and Sky Q support information.

Sky Q and Sky Stream use different delivery methods
- Sky Q: Receives TV by satellite through a dish and receiver.
- Sky Stream: Uses an internet connection; its puck connects to the television’s HDMI port and uses Wi-Fi. Sky says it does not need a dish.
The satellite renewal itself does not tell customers to change their dish, receiver or LNB. If you later choose to switch, the relevant change is to an IP-based service and its broadband and Wi-Fi requirements, not an equipment upgrade required by this contract.

SES reported in 2024 that channels delivered from its 28.2/28.5° East orbital position reached more than 17 million TV households in the UK and Ireland. That is a reach figure for channels from the orbital position, not a count of Sky subscribers, and the 2026 announcement does not give a new household statistic. SES’s 2024 release provides the dated figure.

SES separately cited 12 million satellite homes for that orbital neighbourhood in 2021. Because that older figure uses different wording and a different date, it should not be treated as directly comparable to the 2024 TV-household reach figure. SES’s 2021 release is the source for that number.
