Its only physical connector is a Lightning port on the bottom edge. If your headphones end in the familiar round 3.5 mm plug, you need a Lightning to 3.5 mm Headphone Jack Adapter. Lightning headphones connect directly, while Bluetooth headphones pair wirelessly. Apple does not include EarPods or the adapter in the iPhone 12 box.
What “iPhone 12 jack” actually means
The phrase “iPhone 12 jack” can be confusing because the phone has a connector for wired accessories, but it is not the round audio jack used by traditional headphones. Apple identifies the iPhone 12’s external connector as Lightning. The user guide places that port along the bottom edge, between the speaker and microphone openings.

A 3.5 mm headphone plug cannot be inserted into the Lightning port directly. The two connectors use different physical interfaces, so a standard pair of wired headphones needs an adapter that has a Lightning plug on one end and a 3.5 mm headphone socket on the other.

Apple Support describes its Lightning to 3.5 mm Headphone Jack Adapter this way: “The Lightning to 3.5 mm Headphone Jack Adapter lets you connect 3.5 mm headphones and other audio devices to an iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch that has a Lightning connector.” That is the accessory intended for the iPhone 12’s port.

Where the iPhone 12’s physical connector is located
Look at the lower edge of the phone while holding the display toward you. The Lightning port is the narrow, centered opening. It accepts a Lightning cable, the Lightning end of the audio adapter, or Lightning headphones. There is no second, circular opening for a 3.5 mm plug elsewhere on the frame.
The speaker and microphone openings beside the port are not headphone sockets. They are part of the phone’s built-in audio hardware. Do not force a plug into either opening; a 3.5 mm plug belongs only in the adapter’s round socket.
How to connect existing 3.5 mm headphones
If you already own wired headphones with a conventional 3.5 mm plug, the connection takes two steps after you obtain the correct adapter.

- Insert the Lightning end of a Lightning to 3.5 mm Headphone Jack Adapter into the iPhone 12’s Lightning port.
- Insert the headphones’ 3.5 mm plug into the round socket on the opposite end of the adapter.
Start playback after both plugs are fully seated. The adapter is the bridge between the phone’s Lightning connection and the headphones’ analog-style plug. You do not plug the headphones into the phone first, and you do not use the charging cable for this connection.
To disconnect, stop playback if you want to avoid an abrupt change in sound, remove the headphone plug from the adapter, and then remove the Lightning connector from the phone. Keep the adapter attached to the headphones only if you are storing them together; the phone’s port should remain free of debris and undue sideways pressure.
Which adapter you need
Lightning to 3.5 mm Headphone Jack Adapter
This is the relevant adapter for ordinary wired headphones. One end is a Lightning plug that goes into the iPhone 12; the other is a female 3.5 mm socket for the headphone plug. Apple Support documents this exact connection type for iPhones with Lightning connectors.
USB-C to 3.5 mm adapters
A USB-C-to-3.5 mm adapter is designed for a device with a USB-C port. The iPhone 12 is specified with Lightning, not USB-C, so a USB-C adapter is not the connector identified for this phone. Matching the adapter to the phone’s physical port is more important than choosing an adapter merely because its other end accepts a 3.5 mm plug.

The USB-C to Lightning cable supplied with the iPhone 12 is a charging and data cable. It does not provide a 3.5 mm headphone socket. A Lightning-to-3.5 mm audio adapter is a separate accessory with a round headphone opening.

Connection options compared
| Headphone type | Plug or connection | Adapter needed for iPhone 12 | How it connects | Best fit for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Traditional wired headphones | 3.5 mm plug | Yes: Lightning to 3.5 mm Headphone Jack Adapter | Adapter enters the Lightning port; headphones enter the adapter | People who already own 3.5 mm headphones |
| Lightning headphones | Lightning plug | No separate 3.5 mm adapter | Headphones connect directly to the Lightning port | People choosing a wired Lightning accessory |
| Bluetooth headphones | Wireless Bluetooth connection | No physical audio adapter | Pair the headphones through the iPhone’s wireless settings | People who prefer a cable-free connection |
The available evidence establishes these connection methods, not a ranking of sound quality, durability, latency, microphone performance, or battery life. Those characteristics vary by the specific headphones and adapter, so they should not be inferred simply from the connector type.
Lightning headphones as an alternative
Lightning headphones have a Lightning plug built for devices with that port. They avoid the round 3.5 mm adapter because the headphone cable connects directly to the phone. When considering a pair, confirm that the product is intended for iPhone models with Lightning and check the manufacturer’s compatibility notes for any controls or microphone features you need.
Because the iPhone 12 has one Lightning port, a Lightning headphone cable occupies the same physical port used by a Lightning accessory. That matters when planning how you will use the phone during listening. The connector choice is therefore a practical decision about the accessories you already own and how you expect to use the port.
Bluetooth headphones as an alternative
Bluetooth headphones do not use the Lightning port for audio. After pairing, they communicate wirelessly with the iPhone 12, leaving the physical connector available for another accessory. The exact pairing process and available controls depend on the headphone model, so follow that product’s instructions and verify that it supports the iPhone 12.
Bluetooth is not a replacement adapter for a wired 3.5 mm headset; it is a different connection method. Choose it when avoiding a cable is more important than continuing to use your existing wired headphones. If you want to keep those existing headphones, the Lightning-to-3.5 mm adapter remains the direct solution.
What comes in the iPhone 12 box
Apple’s iPhone 12 specifications list the phone, a USB-C to Lightning cable, and documentation among the box contents. Apple also states that EarPods are not included. The Lightning-to-3.5 mm Headphone Jack Adapter is not listed as an included item, so plan to obtain it separately if you intend to use 3.5 mm headphones.
This packaging detail explains why opening a new iPhone 12 may leave you without a wired listening solution: the supplied cable is not an audio adapter, and the phone has no built-in 3.5 mm socket.

1. Verify the connector sequence
Confirm that the Lightning plug is in the phone and the 3.5 mm plug is in the adapter. A partially inserted plug can leave the headphones connected mechanically but not electrically. Remove both plugs and reconnect them firmly without twisting or forcing them.

2. Check the adapter type
Read the adapter’s connector description. It should identify a Lightning input for the phone and a 3.5 mm headphone socket. If it is labeled USB-C to 3.5 mm, it is intended for a different type of device port.
3. Test the headphones separately
If possible, try the 3.5 mm headphones with another compatible audio source. This separates a headphone fault from an iPhone connection problem. If another pair works through the same adapter, the original headphones or their plug may be the issue.
4. Inspect the Lightning port and plugs
Look for visible lint, dust, bent metal, or damage around the phone’s Lightning port and both ends of the adapter. Do not insert sharp objects or liquid into the port. If the plug cannot seat normally, stop and have the phone or accessory inspected rather than applying force.
5. Confirm that the phone is sending audio to the intended device
Pause and resume playback after reconnecting the adapter. If another audio device was recently connected wirelessly, check the iPhone’s current audio destination and select the wired connection when it appears. The exact on-screen labels can vary with the iOS version and connected accessories.
6. Isolate the failed component
Use a simple substitution sequence: try another pair of 3.5 mm headphones with the adapter, then try the original headphones with a known-good compatible adapter, if one is available. Change only one component at a time so the failed part is identifiable.
7. Reconnect after restarting
If the physical connections are correct but audio still does not appear, disconnect the adapter, restart the iPhone, and reconnect it after the phone is back at the Home Screen. This is a basic software reset, not a replacement for checking compatibility or physical damage.
Compatibility checklist before buying an accessory
- Identify your headphone plug: a round 3.5 mm plug requires the Lightning-to-3.5 mm adapter; a Lightning plug does not.
- Match the phone-side connector: choose Lightning for an iPhone 12, not USB-C.
- Decide whether you want wired or wireless listening: Bluetooth avoids the port, while wired options use it.
- Check the exact product listing: confirm iPhone 12 compatibility and any stated support for in-line controls or a microphone.
- Account for what you already own: the adapter is useful when preserving existing 3.5 mm headphones; buying a new Lightning or Bluetooth headset is optional.
- Check package contents before ordering: the iPhone 12 itself does not supply EarPods or the 3.5 mm adapter.
Common misunderstandings about the iPhone 12 audio port
“The Lightning port is the headphone jack.”
It is the phone’s physical accessory connector, but it is not a 3.5 mm jack. A Lightning accessory can connect there; a bare 3.5 mm plug cannot.

“Any 3.5 mm adapter will work.”
The phone-side connector matters. The adapter described for iPhone 12 is Lightning to 3.5 mm. USB-C-to-3.5 mm products are intended for USB-C ports.
“EarPods are included with every iPhone 12.”
Apple’s specifications say EarPods are not included with the iPhone 12. Do not assume a new retail box contains headphones unless the package description explicitly says so.
Choosing the right path for your situation
You already own 3.5 mm headphones
Buy or use a Lightning to 3.5 mm Headphone Jack Adapter. It preserves the headphones you have and follows Apple’s documented connection method.
You want a wired setup without an adapter
Look for Lightning headphones and verify their compatibility with iPhone 12. Their plug connects directly to the phone’s Lightning port.
You want no cable between the phone and headphones
Choose compatible Bluetooth headphones and pair them with the iPhone 12. No physical audio adapter is required.
You are unsure what a listing supports
Read the connector description rather than relying on a product photo. The decisive details are whether the phone-side plug is Lightning and whether the headphone-side socket accepts 3.5 mm.
What Apple’s documentation establishes—and what it does not
Apple’s iPhone 12 technical specifications establish the Lightning external connector and identify the box contents. Apple’s user guide establishes the connector’s bottom-edge location. Apple Support establishes the purpose and connection sequence for the Lightning to 3.5 mm Headphone Jack Adapter. Apple’s accessory catalog shows Lightning and Bluetooth headphone categories that include iPhone 12 compatibility filters.
Recommended Free Tools
Those documents do not establish a universal difference in sound quality, latency, durability, or reliability among all adapters, Lightning headphones, and Bluetooth headphones. They also do not provide a topical statistic about how many iPhone 12 owners use each option. Treat those as product-specific questions, not conclusions that follow from the iPhone 12 connector alone.
The practical answer
The iPhone 12 has no built-in 3.5 mm headphone jack. Its wired accessory port is Lightning. Use a Lightning to 3.5 mm Headphone Jack Adapter for conventional wired headphones, connect Lightning headphones directly, or choose Bluetooth headphones for wireless listening. The adapter and EarPods are separate from the phone and are not included in the standard iPhone 12 box contents listed by Apple.
