Yes, probably—but only as an association. Human studies repeatedly find that differences in intestinal microbiota composition occur alongside differences in antibody or cellular responses after vaccination. They do not yet show that a particular microbiome causes a stronger response, predict how one person will respond, or prove that probiotics, a special diet, or a microbiome test can improve vaccine protection.
What scientists can say with confidence
The clearest current answer comes from a systematic review published in npj Vaccines on 20 December 2024. The authors searched MEDLINE and Embase through June 2024 for original human studies measuring intestinal microbiota and humoral or cellular responses to vaccination. They included 30 publications representing 26 studies: 14 in infants and 12 in adults. Twenty-six of the 30 publications reported some association between microbiota composition and vaccine response.

That count is a tally of publications, not a 26-out-of-30 increase in vaccine effectiveness. The studies varied substantially in participants, vaccines, sampling schedules, laboratory methods and immune outcomes. The review therefore supports a recurring biological signal, not a validated rule that can be applied to an individual.

What the microbiome patterns looked like
Bifidobacterium and Actinomycetota
Across the heterogeneous studies, members of the phylum Actinomycetota—especially Bifidobacterium—were more often associated with stronger vaccine responses. Depending on the study, “stronger” meant higher antibody concentrations, a greater proportion of participants reaching a response threshold, or a measurable cellular immune response.
This is a broad pattern, not a target level of Bifidobacterium. The review did not establish a dose, species, strain, or stool-test value that an individual should pursue.
Pseudomonadota and Gammaproteobacteria
Pseudomonadota, particularly Gammaproteobacteria, were more often associated with weaker responses. Again, the finding is a cross-study tendency. It does not mean that detecting a Gammaproteobacteria member in a stool sample predicts vaccine failure, nor that eliminating such organisms would improve immunity.

Overall diversity was not a reliable answer
Simple alpha-diversity measures (within-sample richness or evenness) and beta-diversity measures (differences between samples) were not strongly or consistently associated with response differences in the review. A more diverse microbiome is therefore not automatically a better vaccine-response microbiome.
Why the findings cannot be treated as one universal rule
Individual studies asked different questions under different conditions. Those design differences can change the apparent relationship between a stool profile and an immune measurement.

| Comparison point | How studies differed | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Age | Infants and adults were both represented. | The microbiome and immune system change rapidly in infancy, while adult findings may reflect longer-term diet, illness and medication histories. |
| Vaccine | Studies included oral and injected vaccines. | Different antigens, schedules and routes stimulate different immune pathways. |
| Microbiome sample | Stool was collected at different times relative to vaccination. | A sample before vaccination may answer a different question from one collected after an immune response has begun. |
| Laboratory analysis | Sequencing platforms, taxonomic resolution and analytical pipelines varied. | Two laboratories can classify the same organisms at different levels or produce non-identical abundance estimates. |
| Immune outcome | Some measured antibodies; others measured cellular responses. | An association with an antibody titre cannot automatically be transferred to a T-cell endpoint. |
| Timing of measurement | Antibody and cellular responses were assessed at different intervals. | Immune responses rise and mature over time, so timing affects the measured result. |
| Confounding control | Many studies did not fully identify or adjust for all factors that influence immunity. | A microbiome pattern may mark another cause of a weak response rather than cause it directly. |
The review did not find an important overall difference between reported associations for oral versus parenteral (injected) vaccines. That result should not be read as proof that route is irrelevant; the underlying vaccine and study methods were still diverse.
How could gut microbes influence vaccination?
Several mechanisms make an association biologically plausible, but plausibility is not evidence that changing the microbiome improves protection.

Microbial molecules as natural adjuvants
Components of bacterial cell walls and other microbial molecules can stimulate innate immune sensors. Those signals may affect how immune cells respond when they encounter a vaccine antigen, in a way somewhat analogous to an adjuvant that helps focus or amplify an immune response.
Metabolites and antigen-presenting cells
Microbes produce metabolites, including short-chain fatty acids and other compounds, that can influence the activity and maturation of antigen-presenting cells. These cells help initiate and shape adaptive responses, including antibody-producing B cells and vaccine-specific T cells.
Cross-reactive microbial antigens
Some microbial antigens may resemble portions of immune targets. Such molecular similarities could alter the pool of pre-existing immune cells or the way an immune response is directed. This is a proposed explanation, not a demonstrated route from a particular stool profile to better clinical protection.

A person’s microbiome is connected to many other features that influence immunity. Age, underlying health, diet, recent infection, medication use and antibiotic exposure can all affect both microbial composition and vaccine responses. Geography, living conditions and the characteristics of the study population can add further differences.
Suppose a study finds that participants with more Bifidobacterium produce more antibodies. That observation could mean the organism contributes to the response. It could also mean that a healthier diet, fewer antibiotics, younger age or another unmeasured factor produced both the microbiome pattern and the higher antibody level. Without strong adjustment for confounding, repeated measurements and preferably an intervention, the direction of cause remains uncertain.
The 2024 review explicitly cautions that a microbiome profile may be a marker of a weak response rather than its cause. Its authors conclude: “Further adequately powered studies are needed to confirm this association and inform potential microbiota-targeted interventions to optimise vaccine responses.”
Should you take probiotics before a vaccine?
Current evidence does not justify recommending a probiotic product or regimen to improve an individual’s vaccine response.

An earlier systematic review, published in Vaccine in 2018, examined 26 probiotic studies involving 3,812 participants. About half of the studies reported a beneficial effect, with the strongest signal for oral vaccines and injected influenza vaccines. However, the trials used different strains, doses, product formulations, viability and purity standards, and different schedules before or after vaccination. The results did not identify one generally effective product or a regimen that applies across vaccines and populations.
See the review’s indexed record: “The influence of probiotics on vaccine responses – A systematic review”.
A positive result for one strain in one vaccine trial cannot be generalized to every probiotic capsule. Products sold under the same broad category may contain different organisms, doses and storage requirements. The 2024 review’s call for adequately powered studies means that microbiota-targeted interventions remain an open clinical question, not an established preparation step.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Should you get a microbiome test?
No stool test is validated to predict how an individual will respond to a vaccine, and no result from the reviewed studies gives a target score that should guide vaccination. Commercial tests can report relative abundances, but those reports depend on the sample, sequencing method, reference database and analytical pipeline. A percentage in one report is not automatically comparable with a percentage from another.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsTesting also would not solve the causality problem. Even if a test detected a pattern associated with a response in a published cohort, it would not show that changing that pattern would alter immunity. Acting on an unvalidated result could add cost, anxiety or unnecessary supplements without a proven benefit.

What to do when you are due for vaccination
- Follow the recommended schedule. The microbiome findings are not a reason to delay, skip or alter a vaccine.
- Tell a clinician about relevant medicines and conditions. Antibiotic use, immune-suppressing treatment and chronic illness can matter for vaccine decisions, independently of any microbiome test.
- Do not substitute supplements for vaccination. A probiotic or diet change has not been shown to replace the protection established for recommended vaccines.
- Use ordinary health advice rather than a microbiome protocol. A balanced diet, adequate sleep and management of medical conditions may support general health, but they should not be presented as a proven way to raise a vaccine titre.
- Ask about a measured clinical issue. If a clinician is concerned about an immune response—for example, in a person with a condition affecting immunity—the appropriate evaluation depends on the vaccine and the medical context, not on an off-the-shelf microbiome score.
How to read a new study on microbes and vaccines
When a headline claims that a bacterium “boosts” vaccination, check the study behind it.
- Population: Were participants infants, older adults, healthy volunteers or people with a particular illness?
- Intervention or observation: Did investigators assign a probiotic or other treatment, or merely compare naturally occurring microbiomes?
- Vaccine and endpoint: Which vaccine was used, and was the outcome an antibody concentration, a threshold response, a cellular assay or clinical protection?
- Timing: Was the microbiome measured before vaccination, afterward, or repeatedly?
- Confounders: Did the analysis account for age, diet, antibiotics, medications, health status and other relevant variables?
- Sample size and replication: Was the study large enough and was the finding reproduced in an independent group?
- Clinical meaning: Did the measured difference translate into fewer infections or severe cases, or only into a laboratory marker?
These checks separate a useful association from a claim that a consumer can act on today.
What would establish a microbiome-based vaccine intervention?
A convincing intervention would need to define the population, vaccine and microbial treatment precisely; use a controlled design; measure the microbiome and immune response at prespecified times; and monitor safety. It would also need enough participants to distinguish a real effect from normal variation and to account for antibiotic exposure, diet, age, illness and other confounders.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Replication across laboratories and populations would be important because microbiome composition differs by geography, food patterns, age and analytic method. Most importantly, investigators would need to show that an intervention changes a meaningful vaccine outcome, not merely that it changes a stool profile or a short-term antibody measurement.
The practical conclusion
Gut microbes appear to be one factor associated with variation in human vaccine responses. The most consistent broad pattern in the 2024 review linked Bifidobacterium-rich Actinomycetota with stronger responses and Gammaproteobacteria within Pseudomonadota with weaker responses, but the studies did not produce an individual prediction tool or prove cause and effect.
For now, there is no evidence-based probiotic, microbiome test or special pre-vaccine diet that should be routinely recommended to improve protection. Keep vaccination on schedule and treat microbiome-directed strategies as an area for further clinical study.
