Sometimes. The free Microsoft 365 offer on an HP laptop does not have one universal billing rule. A trial activated on Microsoft’s website can charge the saved payment method when the first free month ends unless recurring billing is turned off. A trial started by clicking the Microsoft 365 icon on a new PC may end automatically after a month without requiring cancellation. HP promotional terms also describe automatic renewal at the then-current rate when a payment method has been added. The reliable answer for your laptop is the status shown in your Microsoft account.
What determines whether you will be charged
The wording “free Microsoft 365 offer” can refer to different activation routes. The route used to start the offer, whether a payment method was supplied, and the billing state shown on the Microsoft account determine what happens after the free period.

- Microsoft website activation: Microsoft’s consumer trial guidance says the payment method provided is automatically charged at the end of the first free month unless recurring billing is disabled.
- New-PC icon activation: Microsoft says a trial started by clicking an icon on a new PC ends automatically after a month, so cancellation is not necessary for that specific route.
- HP promotion with payment details: HP documentation says that adding a payment method makes the subscription renew at the then-current rate on the renewal date until it is canceled.
These are different offer paths, not contradictory rules. Country, laptop model, promotion, and the way the offer was redeemed can change the terms. The Services and subscriptions page for the Microsoft account used during activation is the final authority for your individual offer.

Compare the two common trial paths
| Activation path | Payment method | Account status to look for | Date shown | What you normally do | After the free period |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Started on Microsoft’s website | Payment method is provided during sign-up | Recurring billing may be on; a renewal or cancellation control appears | Renewal date, often one month after the start | Turn off recurring billing before the charge if you do not want a paid subscription | Access continues until the displayed end date when billing is turned off |
| Started by clicking the Microsoft 365 icon on a new PC | Terms depend on the offer and whether payment details were requested | Microsoft says this trial ends automatically after a month | Expiry date may be shown rather than a renewal date | Cancellation is not necessary for the automatic-ending trial described by Microsoft | The trial ends at the displayed expiry date |
| HP promotion where a payment method was added | Payment method is on file | Auto-renewal can remain enabled until canceled | Renewal date at the then-current rate | Cancel or turn off recurring billing before the one-month trial ends | Subscription ends on the confirmed expiry date if recurring billing is disabled |

How to check your exact Microsoft 365 status
- Go to account.microsoft.com/services.
- Sign in with the Microsoft account used to activate the HP offer. Signing into a different account can make the subscription appear to be missing.
- Find the Microsoft 365 subscription in the list of services and subscriptions.
- Read the status and date carefully. Note whether the page says renewal or expiry, and record the date shown.
- Check the available action. Manage, Cancel, or Turn off recurring billing means recurring billing may still be enabled. If the action says Turn on recurring billing, Microsoft says recurring billing is already off.
Do not rely solely on the laptop’s purchase date or the date you first opened Word. The relevant one-month or 30-day period is tied to activation of the offer, and the exact end date is the one displayed in the account.
How to stop Microsoft 365 from renewing
For an offer that shows recurring billing, use Microsoft’s account controls rather than uninstalling Office. Removing the apps does not change the subscription status.
- Sign in at account.microsoft.com/services with the activating Microsoft account.
- Locate the Microsoft 365 entry and select Manage.
- Select Turn off recurring billing or Cancel, depending on the label displayed for your offer.
- Complete every confirmation prompt. Stopping at the first screen may leave the renewal active.
- Write down the expiry date displayed after confirmation.
- Keep the confirmation email or take a screenshot showing the changed status and date.
Microsoft states that turning off recurring billing prevents future billing. It normally does not remove the remaining trial access immediately; access continues through the displayed expiry date. If the page now shows Turn on recurring billing, that is the confirmation that automatic renewal is off.
When to cancel
Microsoft’s guidance describes a one-month trial and separately refers to a 30-day window in which a free trial can be canceled before being charged. Treat those figures as guidance for the cited Microsoft trial, not as a promise that every HP promotion uses identical dates. The account page’s renewal or expiry date controls your case.
If you do not intend to pay, turn off recurring billing as soon as you have verified the offer. Waiting until the final day creates a risk of missing the deadline because of time-zone or processing differences. After confirmation, retain the displayed expiry date and evidence of the change.
HP’s promotional wording says that a payment method causes the subscription to renew at the then-current rate on the renewal date until cancellation. “Then-current” means the amount shown at renewal, not necessarily an amount shown when the laptop was purchased. No universal price for all countries or models is published, so use the amount and currency displayed in your account if you are considering continuing.

What happens after you turn off billing
Turning off recurring billing is different from immediately terminating access. Microsoft says the subscription normally remains usable until the expiry date shown on the account.
- During the remaining trial period, Microsoft 365 applications continue to provide the access included in the offer.
- At expiry, Office can move to View Only mode. You can open and print documents, but editing and creating new documents are unavailable.
- Subscription services tied to the plan, including extra OneDrive storage and Skype minutes, are lost when the subscription ends.
Save or move important files before expiry if you will not continue with a paid plan. The documented post-expiry behavior concerns the subscription services; it does not mean that your HP laptop itself stops working.
How to interpret the labels on the account page
“Turn off recurring billing” or “Cancel”
One of these controls means the account still offers a cancellation path. Open it, complete the prompts, and verify the resulting date and status. Do not assume that merely opening the Manage page changed anything.
“Turn on recurring billing”
Microsoft’s support wording is explicit: when you see Turn on recurring billing instead of a cancel link, recurring billing is turned off. The subscription will end on the displayed expiry date, and Microsoft says no further payment is due.

A renewal date
A renewal date means the account is treating the offer as an ongoing subscription. If you do not want a charge, use the cancellation control before that date and retain the confirmation.
An expiry date without a renewal date
An expiry date generally indicates that access is scheduled to end rather than renew. This is consistent with Microsoft’s description of the new-PC-icon trial that ends automatically after a month, but the account status remains the decisive evidence.

The subscription is not listed
Sign out and sign back in with the Microsoft account used when the offer was activated. HP laptops can be set up with one account while Office is redeemed with another, so check the account identity before concluding that no subscription exists.
Rank #3
There is no Cancel link
Look for Turn on recurring billing. Microsoft says that label means recurring billing is already disabled. Record the expiry date rather than trying to cancel again.
The page shows both Manage and an end date
Open Manage and read the status inside the subscription. The decisive distinction is whether the page offers Turn off recurring billing or Turn on recurring billing, not the generic presence of a Manage button.
You are unsure whether the trial came from HP or Microsoft
Use the activation evidence and the account status together. A web sign-up that requested a payment method follows Microsoft’s website-trial pattern; a click on the icon supplied on a new PC may follow the automatic-ending pattern. If the two clues conflict, use the renewal or expiry information shown in the account.
Practical scenarios
You entered a card during online sign-up
The documented Microsoft website flow says the card can be charged when the first free month ends. Sign in, turn off recurring billing, and confirm the expiry date before that date.
You clicked the Office icon during first-time PC setup
Microsoft says this trial ends automatically after a month and does not need cancellation. Still check the account page: if it shows a renewal date or a cancellation control, treat that specific account state as authoritative.
HP’s offer requested payment details
HP’s documentation describes renewal at the then-current rate until cancellation. Disable recurring billing during the one-month trial if you do not want the paid renewal.
You canceled successfully but still see Office on the laptop
That is expected while the trial remains active. Turning off billing normally preserves access until expiry; the change prevents a future charge rather than immediately removing the applications.
Final verification checklist
- Use the Microsoft account that activated the offer.
- Record whether the page shows a renewal date or an expiry date.
- Complete the full Cancel or Turn off recurring billing flow.
- Verify that the page now says Turn on recurring billing when you intend to prevent renewal.
- Save the displayed expiry date and confirmation email or screenshot.
- Before expiry, save documents and review OneDrive files if you will not continue, because editing, creation, extra storage, and Skype minutes can be removed after the subscription ends.
The safest rule is simple: do not infer the billing behavior from the HP brand or the word “free.” Check the Microsoft account status. A renewal date and an active cancellation control require action; an expiry date with Turn on recurring billing means recurring billing is already off.
