Short answer: The Canon PIXMA G3270 does not automatically print on both sides of a sheet. Canon specifies Single Sided (Simplex) Printing. It can create a multi-page PDF, but its scanner is a single-sided flatbed: you place each page on the glass and start each scan yourself because the printer has no automatic document feeder (ADF).
What the G3270 can and cannot do
The G3270 has three separate capabilities that are easy to confuse: printing, scanning and copying. The print engine is simplex, the scanner is a single-sided flatbed, and the software can combine scans into one multi-page PDF. A feature in one area does not add an automatic feeder or duplex mechanism to another.

| Function | G3270 capability | What you do in practice |
|---|---|---|
| Printing | Single Sided (Simplex) Printing | Print one side, then manually turn and reload the sheets to print the reverse. |
| Scanning | Single Sided (Simplex) Scanning | Put one page on the platen, scan it, replace it with the next page, and repeat. |
| Multi-page PDF | Scan Multi-Page PDF | Successive platen scans are saved together as one PDF file. |
| Document feeding | Flatbed; no ADF is listed | A stack cannot be placed in a feeder for automatic scanning. |
| Copy layout | 2-on-1 copy | Two originals can be arranged on one output sheet, but each original is still scanned from the glass. |
Those descriptions come from Canon’s G3270 specifications and instructions. “Single sided” describes how the device handles the document sides; it is not a statement that the printer cannot accept paper marketed for double-sided work.

No. Automatic duplex printing requires a mechanism that takes a printed sheet, reverses or reroutes it, and prints the second side without your intervention. Canon lists the G3270’s print capability as Single Sided (Simplex) Printing, so that mechanism is not part of this model.

What “double-sided matte paper support” means
The specification also mentions Double-sided Matte Paper Support. That phrase identifies a compatible paper type. It means the media can be used for a project that has content on both sides; it does not promise that the printer will turn the sheet over. A paper-support statement and a duplex-printing statement describe different things.
How to make a two-sided document manually
You can still produce a two-sided handout, booklet draft or form, but the second pass is manual. The exact orientation depends on the document and your printer-driver settings, so test with two sheets before running a large job.
- In the print dialog, print only the first side of the document. If the application offers a “pages to print” choice, select odd pages or the first page range.
- Wait until the first side is completely printed and the stack is no longer moving.
- Keep the pages in order, turn or rotate the stack as required by the paper path, and reload it in the input tray. The correct flip direction differs between portrait, landscape and booklet layouts.
- Print the remaining side, usually the even pages or the second page range. If your software has a reverse-order option, use it only when needed to match the tray’s output order.
- Check two or three finished sheets. If the back is upside down or the pages are out of order, change the flip direction or page order and repeat the second pass.
This workflow is often called manual duplexing. It is not automatic duplex printing: someone must handle the stack between passes, and a paper jam or misfeed can require you to reconcile which pages have already received a second side.

Practical limits of manual duplexing
- It is slower than a printer with built-in duplex hardware because every sheet needs a second handling step.
- Mixed paper sizes, preprinted pages and curled sheets make orientation errors more likely.
- For a long report, mark the top edge of a test sheet with a pencil before printing. The mark reveals how the stack travels through the tray and helps you choose the correct flip.
- Allow ink to dry before reloading coated or matte media. Smearing during the second pass can look like a duplex failure even when the page orientation is correct.
Can it scan multiple pages into one PDF?
Yes. Canon lists Scan Multi-Page PDF as a G3270 feature. The feature describes the output file: several scans are assembled into one PDF. It does not mean the scanner can pull a pile of pages through automatically.

Why the process is one page at a time
The G3270 uses a flatbed scanner. You lift the lid, place an original on the glass, and close the lid for each capture. Canon specifies Single Sided (Simplex) Scanning; there is no automatic document feeder listed in the model specifications. A flatbed is useful for books, receipts, photographs and fragile originals, but it cannot grab the next sheet from a stack by itself.
Step-by-step multi-page PDF workflow
- Open the G3270’s scanning software on the computer or use the device’s available scan workflow.
- Choose a document or PDF scan mode, and select the option that creates a multi-page PDF rather than saving each scan as a separate image.
- Place the first sheet face down on the platen, aligned with the guide marks, then start the scan.
- When the software asks for another page, lift the lid, remove the first sheet and place the next one in the same orientation. Start the next scan.
- Continue until every page has been captured. Keep the originals in a separate “scanned” stack so you do not lose your place.
- Choose the command to finish or save the document. Review the page thumbnails or the resulting PDF before closing the project.
Software labels vary by operating system and scan utility, but the essential sequence is the same: scan, replace the platen original, scan again, then finish the multi-page document. If you save each page separately by mistake, you can combine the files later with a PDF tool, but that is a file-assembly workaround rather than automatic feeder scanning.
Resolution and document-size limits
Canon lists an optical scanning resolution of 600 × 1200 dpi and a maximum flatbed document size of 8.5 × 11.7 inches. Letter-size pages fit within that area; larger originals need to be scanned in sections or reduced, and the joins may need to be corrected in software. Optical resolution is the scanner’s physical capture specification, not a guarantee that every scan will be sent or saved at that setting. The selected mode, file type and software can use a lower resolution to reduce PDF size.

Does the G3270 have an ADF?
No ADF is included in the capabilities Canon publishes for this model. An ADF normally sits above the scanner glass and feeds multiple sheets automatically, sometimes scanning both sides in one pass on models designed for duplex scanning. The G3270’s documented flatbed and simplex scanning arrangement means each sheet must be positioned on the platen manually.

This matters most for contracts, school packets, tax records and other jobs involving many loose pages. The G3270 can still produce a complete PDF, but the operator—not the printer—controls page feeding and order. Staples, clips and bound material also have to be removed or opened before a page can lie flat on the glass.
What does 2-on-1 copying do?
The G3270 supports 2-on-1 copying. That layout places two source pages on one output sheet, which can save paper for notes or drafts. Canon’s instructions describe scanning an original from the platen and selecting “Scan” for each next original. You therefore handle the first and second originals separately.
2-on-1 is a page-layout feature, not duplex hardware. It does not feed a stack, scan both sides of an original, or print the back of a sheet automatically. A two-sided original still requires separate handling for each side, and a two-sided output still requires the manual print-and-reload process described above.

The G3270 is a reasonable fit when you mainly print single-sided documents and occasionally assemble a multi-page PDF from a small number of pages. Its flatbed can be preferable for photographs, books or irregular originals that an ADF might not accept. The trade-off is operator time for every multi-page scan and every two-sided print job.

Before buying a different model for heavier document work, check these specifications rather than relying on phrases such as “multi-page” or “double-sided paper.”
- Automatic duplex printing: Look for an explicit automatic or built-in duplex-printing specification, not merely support for double-sided media.
- ADF: Confirm that an automatic document feeder is present and check its sheet capacity.
- Duplex scanning: An ADF may feed only one side at a time; if you need both sides captured automatically, look for duplex or two-sided scanning support.
- PDF workflow: Verify whether multi-page PDF creation is available in the supplied software and whether pages are scanned sequentially or fed from an ADF.
- Original size: Compare the scanner’s maximum platen or feeder size with the documents you handle.
For occasional home use, manual handling may be an acceptable compromise. For weekly batches of dozens of pages, the time spent placing sheets, correcting order and repeating misfeeds can outweigh the printer’s other advantages. A model with an ADF and automatic duplex functions is designed for that workload; the G3270 is not documented as one.

“I selected two-sided printing, but the printer printed one side.”
Check whether the application’s option means manual duplexing. Some print dialogs show a two-sided choice even when the driver expects you to reload the pages yourself. If the driver offers only odd/even page ranges or gives a reload prompt, follow that sequence; the printer will not reverse sheets automatically.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems“The PDF says multi-page, so why did I have to scan every sheet?”
Multi-page refers to the number of pages stored in the resulting file, not the feeding method. On this flatbed, each page must be placed on the glass and scanned individually before it can become one page in the PDF.

“Can double-sided matte paper make the printer duplex?”
No. The paper designation concerns media compatibility. It does not add a second-side print path or change the G3270’s simplex specification.
“Does 2-on-1 copy scan two originals at once?”
No. The originals are scanned from the platen in sequence. The printer combines their images on one output sheet after you select “Scan” for each source page.
Ink and operating considerations
The G3270 uses Canon GI-21 bottles: pigment-based black and dye-based cyan, magenta and yellow. Those ink types affect replacement supplies and the appearance of text or color pages, but they do not alter the printer’s simplex print path or the flatbed scanner’s feeding method. When planning manual two-sided work, allow sufficient drying time—especially on coated media—before turning sheets over.
