Usually, no—not from the front button. On the Astro MixAmp Pro TR Gen 3 and Gen 4, that button is a console/PC mode switch: hold it for about 3–5 seconds to change the LED from red (console mode) to white (PC mode). The unit is powered through USB, so it becomes unpowered only when its USB connection stops supplying power or you unplug it. Whether a shut-down console or computer cuts power to that USB port depends on the host. Older MixAmp Pro models use different standby/power controls, so identify the generation before following instructions.

What the MixAmp Pro TR button actually does

The most common confusion comes from treating the front button as a power button. Logitech’s instructions for the MixAmp Pro TR Gen 3 and Gen 4 describe it as a mode control. Hold the button for 3–5 seconds and the unit changes between console mode, shown by a red light, and PC mode, shown by a white light. The instructions do not describe that action as shutting the hardware down. See the official MixAmp TR support instructions for the same mode-color guidance.

A light that changes from red to white is therefore evidence of a mode change, not a successful power-off. If the LEDs remain illuminated after you shut down your console or computer, the MixAmp may still be receiving five-volt power through USB.

Why model identification matters

“Astro MixAmp” covers several generations. An older MixAmp Pro manual describes a power button that exits standby and fully powers that model on. That behavior should not be applied to the MixAmp Pro TR Gen 3 or Gen 4, whose documented front-button action is mode switching. The older instructions are in the MA3 Manual PS4 Preview.

Model family Documented front-button behavior Power path What the LED tells you
MixAmp Pro TR Gen 3/Gen 4 Hold 3–5 seconds to switch console and PC modes USB supplies power and audio; some console setups also use optical audio Red = console mode; white = PC mode
Older MixAmp Pro (MA3 manual) Power/standby behavior is described separately from TR mode switching Follow that model’s manual rather than the TR procedure Use the model-specific manual; TR colors should not be assumed

The available official documents do not establish a complete, generation-by-generation catalog. If your unit has a different nameplate, port layout, or button arrangement, use its exact manual instead of inferring behavior from a TR model.

How the MixAmp Pro TR receives power

For the MixAmp Pro TR Gen 3, Logitech lists an input of 250 mA at 5 V in the specification for the PS (Black) model. This is the listed power input, not a measured standby-consumption figure. The specification is available at Logitech’s MixAmp Pro TR Gen 3 specification page.

The Gen 4 quick-start guide shows a Micro-USB connection to a PC or Mac and separate console wiring. That USB lead is part of the power path. An optical cable can carry digital audio in a compatible console setup, but it is not the source of electrical power for the MixAmp. The wiring diagrams appear in Logitech’s 2019 ASTRO MixAmp Pro TR Gen 4 quick-start guide.

What “off” means in practice

To make a TR unit genuinely unpowered, remove its USB power connection or ensure the host stops supplying power on that port. Pressing and holding the front button does not provide a documented power-off command for Gen 3/4 TR models.

A console or computer can continue energizing USB ports after shutdown. The official documents cited here do not promise one universal shutdown rule for every console, motherboard, operating system, sleep state, or USB-port configuration. Consequently, a glowing MixAmp after shutdown does not by itself indicate a fault; it indicates that the USB power path may still be live.

Does the MixAmp turn off automatically?

There is no verified automatic-shutoff statistic or universal auto-off feature documented in the official material cited for this article. Logitech’s Astro software page says the software configures supported devices, but it does not document an auto-shutoff setting. You can review the supported software information at Astro Series Software & Download.

That means two claims should be avoided:

  • Do not assume every console or PC cuts USB power immediately when it shuts down.
  • Do not promise that leaving the MixAmp connected is harmless because an automatic power timer will turn it off.

If you need certainty that no power is reaching the unit, disconnect USB. A switched outlet or a host-side USB control may be convenient, but its behavior depends on the particular equipment and is not established by the MixAmp documentation.

How to switch between console and PC modes

Use this procedure only for a MixAmp Pro TR Gen 3 or Gen 4:

  1. Connect the MixAmp’s Micro-USB cable to the console or computer that will provide power and USB audio.
  2. Start the host and wait for the MixAmp to light.
  3. Look at the front LED. Red indicates console mode; white indicates PC mode.
  4. If the connected computer requires PC mode, press and hold the front button for 3–5 seconds until the LED turns white.
  5. For a console setup, hold the button again for 3–5 seconds until the LED turns red.
  6. Test playback and microphone input after the color changes. The color confirms the selected mode; it does not confirm that the unit has powered down.

If your computer shows a red light when you expected PC operation, Logitech’s troubleshooting guidance treats that as a mode mismatch. Switch to white rather than interpreting the red LED as an off or standby indicator.

What to do when the LED stays on after shutdown

1. Confirm which device is supplying USB power

Trace the Micro-USB cable from the MixAmp to its host. If it is connected to a powered USB port, a monitor, dock, hub, or another always-on source, the MixAmp can remain lit even when the main computer or console appears off. The exact result depends on that host’s power-management design.

  • High Quality and 2 Meter in Length: 3.5mm Golden Plated Audio Jack, Oxygen-free copper and gold plated connectors enables durable; 6.5ft length adjusts to your console or PC setup with ease

2. Disconnect USB when you need a definite shutdown

Unplug the Micro-USB cable from the MixAmp or from the power-providing host. If the LEDs go dark, the unit was simply receiving standby power. This is the only direct, model-agnostic step supported by the documented USB power path.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

3. Separate audio wiring from power wiring

In console installations that use both optical and USB, removing optical alone will not make the MixAmp unpowered. Optical carries audio; USB supplies the electrical connection. Disconnect the USB lead when your objective is to stop power.

4. Check for a host-specific USB setting

Some computers and consoles expose settings that affect USB power during shutdown, sleep, or rest mode, while others do not. Because there is no single documented menu path covering every model and operating-system version, consult the host manufacturer’s instructions for its exact settings. Do not assume that changing a sleep option on one platform will have the same effect on another.

5. Rule out a mode misunderstanding

If the LED is red or white, the MixAmp is reporting a selected TR mode. Hold the button for 3–5 seconds to change modes; do not use the color change as proof of a power state. A still-lit LED after a mode change is expected as long as USB power remains present.

USB, optical, and PC/console setup differences

The Gen 4 quick-start guide separates PC/Mac wiring from console wiring. On a computer, USB commonly carries both power and the device’s USB audio connection. On a console, the installation may combine USB for power/control with optical audio, depending on the console and the exact MixAmp package. The presence of an optical cable therefore says nothing about whether the MixAmp is powered.

  • Brand new replacement compatible cable for ASTRO MIXAMP PRO TR
  • 6 feet (1.8 meters) cable
  • Constructed with corrosion-resistant connectors for optimal data transfer and extra durability
  • No hassle return policy

Before troubleshooting, write down the complete path:

  • MixAmp model and generation.
  • Host device and whether it is fully shut down, asleep, or in a low-power rest mode.
  • Where the Micro-USB cable is plugged in.
  • Whether an optical cable is present.
  • LED color before and after shutdown.

This prevents a common mistake: changing the mode button when the real issue is that the host continues to power USB, or unplugging optical while leaving the power cable connected.

Firmware and software checks

Firmware maintenance can resolve compatibility or audio problems, but it is not documented as a way to add an automatic power-off function. Logitech provides official MixAmp TR firmware-update instructions at How to update firmware on MixAmp TR. Follow the instructions for the exact supported model and do not interrupt USB power during an update.

The Astro software download page can help configure supported devices, but its documentation does not list a user-selectable auto-shutoff timer. If the software detects the MixAmp and offers settings, treat those as configuration controls rather than evidence that the front button is a power switch.

Common mistakes and their fixes

Symptom or assumption Likely explanation Correct response
Holding the button makes the LED change color, but the MixAmp remains lit The button switched console/PC mode; USB power is still present Unplug USB to remove power
Red LED while using a PC The TR is in console mode Hold the button 3–5 seconds until white
MixAmp remains lit after console shutdown The console’s USB port may remain powered in its shutdown or rest state Check host-specific power settings or disconnect USB
Optical cable removed but LEDs stay on Optical is audio-only; USB still powers the unit Disconnect the USB cable
Instructions from an older MixAmp do not match the TR Different generation and control design Identify the model and use its manual
Looking for an auto-off option in Astro software No auto-shutoff setting is documented on the cited software page Use physical USB disconnection when an assured power-off is required

Which answer applies to your MixAmp?

  • MixAmp Pro TR Gen 3 or Gen 4: the front button switches console and PC modes. USB removal is the reliable way to make it unpowered.
  • Older MixAmp Pro: consult the older model’s manual; its documented power/standby behavior is different.
  • Unknown model: read the label, inspect the ports, and match the exact generation before pressing or holding any button.

The practical answer is therefore conditional: a Gen 3/4 MixAmp Pro TR does not have a documented front-button power-off action. It stays on whenever its USB source continues to provide power, including some shutdown or sleep conditions. Disconnect USB when you need the unit definitively off, and treat LED colors as mode indicators rather than power indicators.
