Xbox does support some wired USB keyboards for navigation and selected games and apps, but that broader support does not make this particular keyboard usable on an Xbox.
The exact compatibility answer
The product in question is the 8BitDo Retro 87 Mechanical Keyboard – Xbox Edition. Its official support page lists Windows and Android as compatible platforms and explicitly says it cannot be used on Xbox consoles. That manufacturer statement is the decisive answer for an Xbox console owner: plugging this model into an Xbox does not turn it into a supported console keyboard.

This is a model-specific limitation, not a statement that Xbox never accepts keyboards. Xbox’s own accessibility guidance describes a narrower capability: wired USB mice and keyboards can be used for navigation in select games and apps and, with a keyboard, for getting around Xbox. In other words, console support depends on both the keyboard hardware and the software feature being used.
Why “Xbox Edition” is easy to misunderstand
The word “Xbox” in the name identifies the design and licensing relationship. Xbox Wire described the Retro 87 Keyboard and Retro R8 Mouse – Xbox Edition as officially licensed Xbox peripherals that bring the nostalgia of the original Xbox console to modern PC setups. That description is aimed at PC users who want Xbox-themed hardware; it is not a promise that the keyboard is an Xbox-console input device.

8BitDo’s platform list reinforces the distinction. Windows and Android are named as supported platforms, while Xbox consoles are not. A product can carry official console branding, use familiar Xbox colors or symbols, and still be intended only for computers or mobile devices. Check the manufacturer’s compatibility list rather than inferring function from the name, packaging or license.

The connection method and the software environment therefore matter as much as the keyboard’s physical layout. A keyboard that is useful on a Windows computer can be rejected by an Xbox console, while a different wired USB keyboard may work for a particular Xbox title.
What Xbox console keyboard support actually covers
Navigation and system use
Xbox documents keyboard use for getting around the console and for navigation in select games and apps. “Select” is important: this is an enabled feature where supported, not a universal input layer that overlays every screen. Menus, text fields and app controls may expose keyboard handling only when the app developer has implemented it.

Game-by-game input
Games decide whether keyboard input is accepted and which actions it can perform. One title may support a complete keyboard-and-mouse control scheme, another may accept text entry only, and a third may ignore the keyboard entirely. Even when a game is listed as supporting the input method, individual modes, menus or multiplayer rules can differ.
Wired is the documented baseline
The Xbox accessibility wording specifically refers to wired USB mice and keyboards. Do not assume that a wireless connection, Bluetooth pairing or a particular adapter will receive the same treatment. For a console test involving a keyboard that Xbox does support, use a direct wired USB connection first and confirm the title’s own input documentation.
How to check whether an Xbox game supports a keyboard
Use Xbox’s current catalog information for the title rather than relying on the keyboard’s branding or on another game’s behavior.

- Open the Microsoft Store on Xbox or in a web browser.
- Find the Console Keyboard & Mouse category or apply that category/filter when browsing games.
- Search for the exact game you intend to play and open its product page.
- Look for the game’s keyboard-and-mouse support designation and read any input notes supplied by the publisher.
- Check the game’s own settings after installation. A supported title may require you to select keyboard and mouse controls, assign keys or enable the input device before gameplay.
The Microsoft Store category is a live catalog, not a permanent compatibility database. When accessed in 2026, it displayed 465 items across 10 pages; that count can change as games are added, removed or reclassified. Treat the listing as a current aid for choosing a title, not as proof that every keyboard model works with every listed game.

What this means for the 8BitDo Retro 87
If your goal is Xbox-console gaming
Do not buy or connect this model expecting it to control Xbox games or the dashboard. The manufacturer’s console answer is negative, so troubleshooting cables, changing a game’s key bindings or searching for an Xbox setting cannot overcome that product-level limitation. The most useful decision is to choose hardware explicitly supported for the console instead.
If your goal is an Xbox-themed PC setup
The product’s documented Windows support fits a computer-based setup. On Windows, the keyboard can be evaluated as a PC peripheral, and the Xbox Edition styling can be used for an Xbox-inspired desk without implying console functionality. Android is also listed by 8BitDo as a compatible platform, which is a separate use case from both Windows and Xbox.

If you already own one
Use it on a listed platform rather than treating the Xbox console as a compatibility experiment. If you need keyboard input on Xbox, consult the console’s current supported-device and game information and use a wired USB model whose compatibility is established for that environment. Keep the two questions separate: whether Xbox supports keyboard input for a title, and whether Xbox supports this exact 8BitDo model.

Xbox Wire’s May 15, 2024 announcement added a distinct browser and PC scenario. It described using a mouse and keyboard for selected Xbox Cloud Gaming titles in Microsoft Edge or Google Chrome. It also referred to games in the Xbox app on PC that carry a keyboard-and-mouse badge. In those cases, the browser or Windows PC is handling the peripheral while the game service supplies the software experience.

That arrangement should not be used to predict what happens when the same keyboard is connected directly to an Xbox console. Cloud gaming in a browser, a game running in the Xbox app on PC and a native Xbox-console installation are different environments with different compatibility rules. A game’s cloud or PC badge is therefore not a console guarantee.

A practical decision checklist
- Identify the hardware: confirm that the label says Retro 87 Mechanical Keyboard – Xbox Edition, not a different 8BitDo model.
- Identify the device: Xbox console, Windows PC, Android device and Xbox Cloud Gaming are separate contexts.
- Read the platform list: this model’s listed platforms are Windows and Android; Xbox consoles are excluded.
- For console use, check the title: use the Microsoft Store’s Console Keyboard & Mouse category and the game’s own control information.
- For a supported console keyboard, start wired: Xbox’s documented guidance is for wired USB keyboards and only selected games and apps.
- Do not generalize from branding: an official Xbox license signals design and marketing provenance, not universal hardware support.

Common assumptions that lead to a wrong purchase
“It has an Xbox logo, so the console must recognize it.”
Licensing and compatibility are different claims. Xbox Wire’s description places this peripheral in modern PC setups, and 8BitDo’s own FAQ rules out Xbox consoles.
“Xbox has USB ports, so any USB keyboard should work.”
A USB port provides a physical connection, not universal game support. Xbox limits documented keyboard use to navigation and selected games and apps, and individual titles still control whether keyboard input is enabled.
“If one Xbox game accepts a keyboard, every game will.”
Input support is implemented at the game or app level. Use the Console Keyboard & Mouse catalog and the title’s settings instead of transferring one game’s behavior to another.

Cloud gaming in Edge or Chrome and keyboard-enabled games in the Xbox app on PC are separate software paths. Their support does not override the Retro 87’s console incompatibility.
Bottom line for buyers
The 8BitDo Retro 87 Mechanical Keyboard – Xbox Edition is an Xbox-themed keyboard for the platforms 8BitDo lists—Windows and Android—not a keyboard supported on Xbox consoles. Xbox does offer selective wired-keyboard support for navigation and certain games and apps, so console keyboard use is possible with appropriate hardware and software. Check the exact game category and the exact device context before buying; neither an Xbox license nor a PC or cloud-gaming badge makes every Xbox game and app compatible.
