No. SynthID is a watermark detector, not an authenticity certificate. A detected watermark is evidence that some content is likely associated with a participating AI system; it does not prove who created the file, preserve its complete editing history, or show that the scene depicted is true. A result that says no watermark was found is equally limited: it only means the detector did not find the mark it checks for.
Use SynthID to investigate a file’s likely relationship to supported AI-generation systems. For consequential claims, combine that signal with the original source, publication date and context, independent corroboration, and any surviving provenance metadata or digital signatures.

What SynthID actually is
Google describes SynthID as an imperceptible watermarking system for AI-generated images, video, audio and text. For images and video, the system embeds a signal in the visual content rather than displaying a visible label. Google says the design aims to keep the signal detectable after some common transformations, including cropping, filters, changes to video frame rate and lossy compression.
Those are design goals and vendor claims, not a guarantee for every file or every edit. The watermark is evidence about the content’s relationship to a participating generation system. It is not a cryptographic statement that the file is untouched, that the named uploader is the author, or that the event shown actually happened.

How the scope developed
Google’s original image announcement described watermarking and identifying outputs from Imagen for Vertex AI customers. Google’s current overview describes broader checking through Gemini, Search, Chrome and a SynthID Detector portal, including content from supported partners. This history matters because coverage depends on the model, product, media type and detector version involved. SynthID should not be described as a universal detector for all AI-generated media.
What each SynthID result means
| Result | What it supports | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Watermark detected | The file, or a portion of it, is likely associated with a supported AI-generation system. | The complete file history, the identity of the creator or sharer, absence of other edits, or truth of the depicted scene. |
| Possibly detected | An uncertain signal that warrants additional checking. | A firm conclusion that the media came from a supported system. |
| Not detected | The detector did not find the watermark it checks for. | Proof that a person made the file, that it is unedited, or that it is authentic. |
Google’s original image announcement presented the “possibly detected” category as a cautionary middle state. Treat it as uncertainty rather than as a weaker version of a positive identification.
Why a detected watermark is not proof of authenticity
“Authentic” can mean several different things. A file may be original to a camera, genuinely created by a named person, unchanged since capture, or an accurate depiction of a real event. SynthID addresses none of those questions by itself. It addresses a narrower question: whether the detector finds a watermark associated with a participating AI system.
- Authorship: A positive signal does not identify the person or organization that generated, edited or uploaded the file.
- Chain of custody: It does not record every export, crop, compositing step or repost after generation.
- Truth: A watermark cannot determine whether a caption is accurate or whether a depicted event occurred.
- Completeness: Google’s original description says part of an image may be generated. A positive result therefore need not mean that every pixel or frame was produced by AI.
An AI-generated image can be factually accurate, while a photograph without any watermark can be misleading. Watermark status and factual reliability are separate assessments.

Why a negative result does not make a file real
A “not detected” result is negative only with respect to the watermark being checked. The media may have come from an unsupported model, a system that does not embed SynthID, or a product that the current detector cannot yet check. The mark may also have been damaged or removed by transformations outside the system’s tested range.
Google says SynthID is not foolproof against extreme image manipulation and describes it as one part of a broader identification toolkit. Consequently, a negative result should be recorded as “no supported SynthID watermark found,” not translated into “human-made,” “original” or “verified.”
Where you can check media today
Google’s current overview describes several entry points. Labels, supported formats and availability can change by region and product, so follow the live interface rather than assuming every account has identical controls.
- Gemini: Upload an image, video or audio clip and ask whether Google AI created or altered it. The response applies to the media and watermark support available to that product at the time of checking.
- Search and Chrome: Google says these products can check for a SynthID watermark. A browser or search result is still a detector result, not an authenticity certificate.
- SynthID Detector portal: Google describes the portal as expanding access to everyone and as checking Google and partner AI content. Supported models and media types remain the limiting factors.
Google names OpenAI, NVIDIA and Kakao as partners in the current overview and says Apple support is forthcoming. Partner participation does not mean that every output from those companies, every historical model or every file format is automatically covered. Check the portal’s current support information when the distinction matters.

How resistant is the watermark to editing?
Google says the image watermark is designed to survive common changes such as filters, color or brightness adjustments and lossy compression. Its video method is described as embedding a signal in every frame, and Google’s 2024 announcement said videos generated by Veo on VideoFX were marked this way. Google’s current Veo 3.1 page also says Veo videos are marked with SynthID.
These statements describe Google’s engineering targets and internal testing. They do not provide an independently validated detection rate for all images or videos. Google also acknowledges that extreme manipulation can defeat detection. A successful check after a routine resize is therefore useful evidence about the file’s origin, but it is not a guarantee that the file has never been altered.
Edits that can change your confidence
- Routine crops, filters, brightness or color changes and lossy recompression are among the transformations Google says the design targets.
- Heavy re-rendering, aggressive frame processing, repeated conversions or other extreme manipulation may reduce detectability.
- For video, changes to frame rate are specifically included among the transformations Google says it considered, but the result still depends on the particular file and detector.
A practical verification workflow
When a disputed image or video could affect safety, reputation, money or public decisions, treat SynthID as one step in a documented review.

- Run an available SynthID check. Use Gemini, Search, Chrome or the Detector portal, depending on the media type and access available to you. Record the exact result: detected, possibly detected or not detected.
- Identify the covered question. A positive result supports a claim about likely association with a supported AI system. A negative result says only that this detector did not find its mark.
- Inspect provenance information. Metadata and digital signatures can help identify who created a file and whether it changed when that information remains intact. Record what is present, but remember that metadata can be removed or lost during editing.
- Check the source and timing. Find the earliest publisher you can, compare the stated date and location with the account’s history, and distinguish a first-hand upload from a repost with no context.
- Seek independent corroboration. For a claimed event, compare reliable reporting, official records, eyewitness material or other primary evidence. A watermark result cannot substitute for corroboration.
- Report the conclusion narrowly. Say what the evidence supports—for example, “a supported watermark was detected”—and keep unknowns explicit instead of calling the file authentic or fake.
SynthID compared with other verification signals
| Method | Coverage | Signal establishes | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| SynthID watermark | Participating systems, supported products and formats | Whether the detector finds an associated watermark | Does not prove authorship, an unbroken history or factual truth |
| Metadata | Files that retain embedded capture or editing information | Potential clues about software, time, device or workflow | Can be stripped, altered or lost during editing and reposting |
| Digital signatures or provenance records | Files and platforms that preserve the relevant signing system | Who signed content and whether it changed after signing, when intact | Absence of a signature is not proof of fabrication; coverage is not universal |
| Source and context checks | Any media for which reliable records or corroboration exist | Whether the claim, date, location and account of events fit available evidence | Requires time and trustworthy independent sources |
Watermarks, metadata and signatures can complement one another. None is a general-purpose truth detector, and a missing signal from any one method should not be treated as a clean bill of health.

Special considerations for video
Video adds timing and editing questions that do not arise in a single still image. Google describes its video method as embedding a signal in every frame, and its 2024 announcement connected that implementation to Veo videos on VideoFX. A current Veo 3.1 page likewise says Veo videos carry SynthID.
That does not make every video checkable. A clip may have been generated by a system outside the supported set, assembled from multiple sources, or altered after export. A positive signal may relate to only a segment or layer, while a negative result may reflect unsupported content or damage to the watermark. Review the entire clip’s provenance, not just a detector label attached to one upload.
What is known—and not known—about accuracy
The reviewed official material does not provide an independently validated numerical detection rate for SynthID images or videos. Google reports internal testing against many common image manipulations and describes the watermark as robust to several routine edits, while also acknowledging limits under extreme manipulation. Those statements should not be converted into a percentage, a universal error rate or a claim that detection is guaranteed.

Common situations and the right conclusion
A news photo returns “not detected”
You can say that no SynthID watermark was found. You cannot infer that the photo came directly from a camera or that the reported event is genuine. Verify the photographer, original publication and independent accounts.
A social-media image returns “detected”
You can say that the image is likely associated with a supported AI-generation system. You still need to determine whether only part of the image was generated, who posted it and whether its caption describes a real event.
A compressed or cropped clip returns “possibly detected”
Keep the result uncertain. Preserve the clip, locate a higher-quality source if possible and compare provenance and context before making a public claim.
A file has intact metadata but no SynthID result
Metadata may provide useful creation or editing clues, but it does not replace the watermark check or establish truth. Confirm that the metadata is internally consistent and consider whether the platform could have rewritten it.
