Yes. Subnautica 2 supports cross-platform multiplayer, full gamepad input (including Xbox controllers), and Steam Deck play. Steam currently labels the game Steam Deck Verified and lists both Cross-Platform Multiplayer and Full Controller Support. A host can play online with up to three friends, for four players total.
The game launched in Early Access on Steam and Game Preview on Xbox on May 14, 2026. That status matters: performance, controls, multiplayer behavior, and even the Steam Deck verification state can change in later updates.

How Subnautica 2 cross-play works
Cross-play means that supported players do not need to own the game on the same platform to share an online world. In practical terms, a person playing through Steam on PC can play with a friend using the Xbox version, provided both are joining the supported online multiplayer service.
Xbox Wire’s May 4, 2026 announcement quotes Unknown Worlds programmer Sam Dark describing the process: “You can play with your Xbox friends, as well as your friends on other platforms, as easily as opening the menu and inviting them to your game.” That statement establishes the intended flow: start or load a game, open the in-game menu, and send an invitation to the friend you want to join.

Steam-to-Xbox example
- Launch Subnautica 2 on Steam and enter the multiplayer-capable game.
- Have your Xbox friend launch the Xbox version and be available online.
- Open the game menu and use the invitation option described by the developer.
- Accept the invitation on the other platform and join the host’s session.
The game’s store description treats co-op as an optional addition to a single-player experience. You can therefore play alone, then invite friends rather than creating a permanently separate multiplayer-only mode. The documented limit is up to three friends in addition to the host, making four players in one online session.
What cross-play does not guarantee
Cross-platform support does not mean that every edition, storefront, or future test build will always be interchangeable. Subnautica 2 is still being developed, and the Xbox release is identified as Game Preview while the Steam release is Early Access. If an update changes multiplayer behavior, the current store listing and official support information are the places to check before troubleshooting your network.
Controller support on PC and Xbox
The official Subnautica 2 Help Center, updated April 16, 2026, gives an unambiguous answer: “Yes, Subnautica 2 offers full controller (gamepad) support, including Xbox controllers.” This is broader than merely recognizing a few buttons. It indicates that a gamepad is a supported way to play the full game.

Xbox Wire also reports that the development team spent substantial time making the Xbox controller experience strong and calls the controller one of the primary input methods. For a PC player who prefers a gamepad, an Xbox Wireless Controller is therefore a natural choice because it is explicitly covered by the developer’s support statement. The same support applies when playing the Xbox edition.
What “full controller support” means for a player
- You can use a compatible gamepad instead of relying on keyboard and mouse controls.
- Xbox controllers are specifically included in the official support statement.
- The control scheme is intended to cover normal gameplay, not just menus or a limited subset of actions.
- Handheld players benefit from the same controller-focused design rather than needing a separate touch-control solution.
The available documentation does not publish a complete button map or list every third-party controller model. If a non-Xbox pad behaves differently, compatibility can depend on the platform’s own controller layer and on changes made during Early Access. Xbox-pad support is the clearest documented baseline.
Steam Deck compatibility
Steam currently assigns Subnautica 2 the Verified Steam Deck compatibility label. That is the strongest standard compatibility category shown in Steam’s Deck metadata and signals that the game meets Valve’s current checks for that device.

The developer’s Help Center provides a second, independent signal: controller input is optimized for Steam Deck and for the ROG Ally series. Together, those details answer both parts of the Deck question. The game is intended to run on the handheld, and its controls are designed around handheld gamepad use rather than treating the device as an unsupported miniature PC.

What to check before a Deck session
- Open the game’s current Steam store page and confirm that the compatibility badge still reads Verified.
- Install the latest available game update before joining friends, since multiplayer and input behavior can change during development.
- Start the game with the Deck’s built-in controls and check that navigation and gameplay respond as expected.
- If you are joining a cross-platform session, have the host send the invitation from the in-game menu after everyone is online.
Verification is not a permanent promise. It reflects the state tested and recorded by Steam at a particular time. Because Subnautica 2 remains in Early Access, a future patch could affect frame-rate consistency, battery use, control layouts, loading behavior, or the badge itself. A change in the badge would not necessarily mean the game became unplayable, but it would mean you should read the current compatibility notes before relying on it for a trip or group session.
Choosing a setup for your group
| Setup | Cross-play expectation | Input option | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Steam PC with an Xbox player | Supported by the announced cross-platform multiplayer system | Keyboard and mouse or an Xbox controller on PC; controller play on Xbox | Both players must be on currently supported builds while the game is in Early Access/Game Preview. |
| Steam PC with Steam Deck | Uses the same supported online multiplayer service | Deck controls or another supported gamepad | Steam currently lists the title as Deck Verified, but verification can change with updates. |
| Xbox with Xbox | Supported online co-op | Xbox controller | The announced player limit remains four total, including the host. |
| Solo Steam Deck play | Cross-play is optional | Built-in Deck controls | The game remains playable as a single-player experience; multiplayer is an option rather than a requirement. |
Player limits and session planning
Subnautica 2’s co-op scale is deliberately small. The Steam listing says the single-player experience can optionally be played with up to three friends. Count the person who starts the game as one player, so the maximum is four people in a session.

- BOLD STYLE, BUILT TO PERFORM — Define your swagger with a wild, head-turning design. Stay elegantly on target with textured triggers built for every moment.

- PLAY ACROSS EVERY SCREEN — Quickly pair with, play on, and switch between devices including console and PC. Stream games across mobile, gaming handhelds, Smart TVs, and supported VR headsets with XBOX Cloud Gaming.
That limit affects how you organize a group. A four-person team can include one Steam host and three friends on supported platforms, but a fifth person cannot be added to the same session under the documented limit. If your group is larger, you would need separate sessions rather than assuming the game supports a larger server.

Troubleshooting common problems
The invitation does not appear
- Confirm that both players have launched the current version available for their platform.
- Have the host open the in-game menu and send the invitation again, following the documented cross-platform flow.
- Verify that the intended friend is online on the correct platform account.
- If the problem began after an update, check the latest official support information because Early Access changes can affect multiplayer behavior.
An Xbox controller is not responding on PC
- Reconnect the controller before launching the game, then test it in another game or in the operating system’s controller settings.
- Restart Subnautica 2 after the controller is detected so the game can initialize its full gamepad support.
- Use the current game build; controller fixes and layout changes can arrive through Early Access updates.
- If the issue persists, consult the Help Center’s current controller guidance rather than assuming that all third-party pads have the same support level as Xbox controllers.
Steam Deck performance or controls changed
- Recheck the Steam store page for the current Deck compatibility badge.
- Install pending SteamOS and game updates, then restart the Deck.
- Test the built-in controls in a solo session before joining a group.
- Remember that the Verified label and the developer’s optimization statement describe the current release, not a permanent guarantee for every future patch.
