Does Steam Frame Support Single-Eye Tracking, and Can You Switch Eyes?

No—at least not according to Valve’s published Steam Frame information. Valve confirms that Steam Frame has two inward-facing cameras used for eye tracking and foveated streaming, but its public product page does not confirm monocular (single-eye) tracking, identify which camera serves which eye, or document a setting that lets you switch tracking between the left and right eye. The most accurate answer is therefore that both single-eye tracking and eye switching remain undocumented, not that either feature definitely exists or definitely does not.

The direct answer

Valve’s official Steam Frame product page, checked on October 13, 2026, describes eye-tracking hardware and its role in foveated streaming. It does not say that the headset can continue tracking with only one eye, allow you to select a preferred eye, or provide a left-eye/right-eye switch in software.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

That distinction matters. A headset can contain multiple interior cameras without exposing independent eye controls to the user. Camera count is a hardware description; single-eye operation and eye selection are software and system-behavior questions. Valve has not published the information needed to answer those questions affirmatively.

What Valve confirms about Steam Frame’s eye tracking

Two interior cameras are listed

Steam Frame’s specifications list “2x interior cameras for eye tracking and foveated streaming.” This establishes that the headset includes two inward-facing cameras and that Valve associates them with eye tracking and the delivery of foveated graphics. The specification does not identify a dedicated left-eye camera and right-eye camera, describe stereo or independent operation, or explain whether one camera can be disabled while the other remains active.

Eye data steers foveated streaming

Valve explains the intended use of the tracking data in this sentence: “Behind the scenes, we’re using low-latency eye tracking data to steer the best quality pixels only to where you’re looking.” In practical terms, the system is designed to concentrate the highest-quality streamed image data around the user’s gaze instead of treating every part of the scene identically.

The page says this approach “typically offers over a 10x improvement in image quality and effective bandwidth.” That is Valve’s own product-page claim for Steam Frame in 2026. The cited page does not provide a test protocol, hardware configuration, baseline, or independent benchmark, so the figure should not be treated as a laboratory result. It also says nothing about whether the gaze input can come from one eye only or whether an eye can be selected.

The display and fit figures are separate specifications

Valve lists a 2160 × 2160 LCD panel for each eye and a target interpupillary-distance range of 60–70 mm. Those figures describe the displays and the optical fit. They do not reveal how the cameras are mapped to the eyes, how calibration handles an occluded eye, or whether the software offers monocular tracking.

What the public documentation does not say

The product page leaves several details unspecified. None of the following is documented there:

  • Whether Steam Frame can track gaze reliably when only one eye is visible or usable.
  • Whether the user can choose the left eye, right eye, or both during setup.
  • Whether there is a setting to switch the active eye after calibration.
  • How calibration behaves when one eye is covered, closed, obstructed, or affected by an optical issue.
  • Whether the headset automatically falls back to the other eye.
  • Whether applications receive separate left-eye and right-eye tracking data or only a combined gaze result.
  • Which of the two interior cameras observes which eye, or whether both cameras contribute to both eyes.

Because those points are absent, it would be incorrect to advertise single-eye support as a feature. It would be equally incorrect to claim that the headset cannot do it: Valve has simply not specified the behavior in the cited public material.

Why “two cameras” does not prove independent eye selection

It is tempting to read “2x interior cameras” as “one camera per eye,” then assume that either eye can be selected. That inference is not supported by the specification. A hardware count does not state the optical field of view, the processing pipeline, the calibration model, or the controls exposed in firmware.

Even if each camera is aimed primarily at one eye, the software could require both inputs, combine them into a single estimate, or use one as a consistency check. Conversely, a system could potentially continue operating with one input while offering no user-facing switch. Those are implementation possibilities, not documented Steam Frame capabilities.

The only safe conclusion from the camera specification is that two inward-facing cameras are present and assigned a purpose that includes eye tracking. It does not establish a per-eye toggle, a dominant-eye preference, or an accessibility mode for monocular use.

Three different features people may mean by “single-eye tracking”

Monocular operation

Monocular operation means the tracking system can produce usable gaze data when only one eye is available to it. This could matter if one eye is covered, has limited vision, is obstructed by an unusual optical setup, or cannot participate in calibration. Valve does not state whether Steam Frame supports this mode.

A selectable tracked eye

A selectable-eye control is narrower: the headset might track both eyes normally but let the user choose left or right as the active source. Such a control would normally appear in setup, accessibility, calibration, or advanced eye-tracking settings. No such control is listed on Valve’s public page.

Automatic fallback

Automatic fallback would allow the system to detect that one eye is unavailable and continue with the other without the user choosing it manually. This is different from a switch-eyes setting and would need its own documentation and testing. Valve does not describe fallback behavior, eye-occlusion handling, or calibration recovery.

Can you switch eyes in Steam Frame settings?

There is no documented left-eye/right-eye switch in the official information currently available. Valve’s page focuses on foveated streaming rather than presenting a complete calibration or accessibility manual. It does not name a menu, toggle, shortcut, or command for changing the tracked eye.

Do not treat the absence of a published control as proof that a future firmware version could never add one. Steam Frame specifications are subject to change ahead of availability, according to the product page. Until Valve documents the behavior in a manual, release note, or headset interface, however, buyers should plan on having no confirmed eye-selection option.

What this means for different users

Users who need one-eye operation

If you depend on monocular tracking for accessibility or because one eye cannot participate in calibration, Steam Frame’s public specifications do not provide a purchasing guarantee. The eye-tracking feature is described for directing foveated-streaming detail, not as an accessibility system with documented per-eye controls.

The prudent approach is to wait for a complete setup guide or obtain a clear answer from Valve for the exact condition you need to accommodate. A statement that the headset has eye tracking is not enough to establish that it will operate with one eye covered or disabled.

Users with prescription inserts

Valve’s page lists Zenni prescription inserts as an accessory. The listing does not present those inserts as a way to select an eye, alter camera assignment, or enable monocular tracking. Prescription compatibility and eye-selection behavior are separate questions: an insert may address optical correction while leaving the tracking software unchanged.

Users considering the Arcturus Vision Camera

The same page lists the Arcturus Vision Camera for passthrough and spatial video. It is not presented as an eye-tracking accessory or as a device for choosing which eye Steam Frame tracks. Buying that camera should not be treated as a solution to the single-eye question.

Users focused only on streamed-image quality

Valve’s stated purpose for eye tracking is foveated streaming: directing higher-quality pixels toward the user’s gaze. If tracking is unavailable or inaccurate, the product page does not explain what fallback rendering mode, quality setting, or bandwidth behavior will apply. Those operational details also remain undocumented.

How to verify the behavior when documentation or hardware is available

Because Valve has not published a switch-eyes procedure, there is no official sequence of buttons to follow today. When Steam Frame documentation and software are available, use this evidence-based checklist rather than assuming the camera layout answers the question:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Read the current setup and accessibility documentation. Look specifically for terms such as “monocular,” “single eye,” “left eye,” “right eye,” “dominant eye,” “eye occlusion,” and “fallback.” Confirm the firmware or software version covered by the instructions.
  2. Inspect the calibration flow. Note whether calibration requires both eyes, offers separate left and right stages, or provides a way to skip one eye. A two-stage calibration screen would not automatically prove that either eye can be used alone; look for an explicit option or statement.
  3. Search the headset settings. Check eye-tracking, accessibility, input, and advanced sections for an eye-selection control. Record the exact label and whether changing it requires recalibration.
  4. Check release notes after updates. A firmware update could add, remove, or rename controls. Use the notes for the installed version rather than relying on screenshots from an earlier build.
  5. Test only where the software exposes a status or calibration result. If the interface reports tracking quality for each eye, compare the results with one eye temporarily occluded. Do not infer support from a short-lived cursor movement or a single application’s behavior.
  6. Check application requirements separately. Even if the headset can estimate gaze from one eye, an application may require combined binocular data or may not expose eye tracking at all. Headset capability and application support are separate layers.

These steps can establish what a released build actually does, but they should not be used to turn an undocumented behavior into a guaranteed feature for other software or future firmware.

A useful comparison framework for eye-tracking claims

If you are comparing Steam Frame with another headset, use explicit documentation rather than camera counts. The relevant questions are:

Comparison axis What to look for Steam Frame status in Valve’s cited page
Monocular tracking An explicit statement that tracking works with one eye Not stated
Eye selection A documented left-eye/right-eye setting or calibration choice Not stated
Occlusion handling Instructions for a covered, closed, or unavailable eye Not stated
Per-eye data Developer documentation describing separate eye outputs Not stated
Tracking purpose Whether eye data is used for rendering, input, accessibility, or other functions Foveated streaming is documented

This framework prevents a common mistake: treating the presence of eye-tracking cameras as proof of every software feature associated with eye tracking.

Steam Frame specifications relevant to this question

Specification What Valve says What it does not establish
Interior cameras 2x interior cameras for eye tracking and foveated streaming Camera-to-eye assignment, monocular operation, or an eye switch
Display 2160 × 2160 LCD per eye Tracking behavior or calibration requirements
Target IPD 60–70 mm Whether either eye can be selected independently
Foveated-streaming claim Typically over a 10x improvement in image quality and effective bandwidth Independent benchmark results or single-eye support
Accessories listed Zenni prescription inserts and the Arcturus Vision Camera Either accessory provides eye selection

All of these details come from Valve’s Steam Frame product page, and the page warns that specifications may change before availability.

Verdict

Steam Frame is documented as having two inward-facing cameras that supply low-latency eye-tracking data for foveated streaming. Valve has not documented single-eye tracking, automatic one-eye fallback, or a setting that lets users switch between eyes. Until an official manual or software release explicitly describes those functions, treat them as unconfirmed rather than assumed features.
