No. A smart home can usually decide “home” or “away” without continuously collecting GPS coordinates. Wi‑Fi connection state, Bluetooth beacons, motion sensors, media activity and a privacy-limited zone signal can all provide useful presence information. GPS is worth enabling only when an automation needs an outdoor zone, a precise arrival distance or a map of movement.
The important distinction is between presence—a state such as home, away or in a named zone—and location tracking, which can reveal coordinates, routes and movement context. Choosing the least detailed signal that still triggers the automation reduces privacy exposure and often makes the system easier to troubleshoot.

Presence detection and location tracking are different things
Presence detection answers a narrow question: is a particular person or device considered to be at home, away or in another defined zone? Location tracking records where a phone is, often as latitude and longitude, and may retain a history of movements. A geofence can turn coordinates into a simple entry or exit event, but the underlying phone permission and operating-system behavior still determine what data is available.
For a “turn on the hallway lights when someone gets home” routine, a home/away state is normally enough. A “start heating when I am within 2 kilometers of the house” routine needs a distance or outdoor zone and therefore benefits from exact location. Treating these as the same requirement leads to unnecessary data collection.

Google Home describes its presence feature as combining optional phone-location signals with activity from Google smart-home devices, including motion detectors and media activity. Google Home Help says the app does not track where you are or where you have been beyond whether you are inside your home’s geofence. Phone location is opt-in and can be turned off.
Do you need GPS for smart-home presence detection?
Use this rule: if the automation only needs a binary or named-zone result, start without exact GPS. Add precise location when the behavior depends on being outside the home, crossing a particular boundary or knowing how far away you are.
| Method | Data disclosed | Good fit | Limits and accuracy considerations |
|---|---|---|---|
| GPS or geofence | Coordinates, or entry/exit events depending on settings | Arrivals, departures and multiple outdoor zones | Requires phone permissions; affected by battery state, signal and geofence behavior; exact coordinates reveal more than home/away |
| Wi‑Fi or router | Whether a device is connected to the home network | Simple home/away detection without outdoor coordinates | Fails to represent a person if the phone is left behind; requires a compatible router integration |
| Bluetooth beacon | Proximity to a fixed beacon | Room or nearby-presence signals with limited geographic detail | Range, radio interference and beacon placement affect detection; compatible hardware and integration are required |
| Motion and media sensors | Activity detected inside the home | Confirming that someone is active when phones are absent | May show activity without identifying which person is present; only eligible devices contribute in some ecosystems |
| Zone Name Only in Home Assistant | A label such as a zone name or not_home |
Presence automations that do not need coordinates | Removes exact position and fine-grained movement information, so distance-based automations cannot use it |
How the main methods work
GPS and geofencing
A phone can report its position to a home-automation platform, which then evaluates whether it is inside a configured boundary. Apple calls this condition monitoring, also known as geofencing: an app is alerted when a user enters or exits a geographic region. The result can be reduced to an event such as “entered Home,” but enabling location still gives the operating system and integration access to the position needed to calculate that event.
GPS is the most flexible option when you have several zones—for example, home, office and a school—or when an automation should begin before arrival. It is also the method to choose for a distance threshold or a map. It is not automatically the most reliable: permissions, background-app limits, low battery, weak satellite or cellular reception and the platform’s geofence evaluation can all delay an event.
Wi‑Fi and router presence
A router integration can expose whether a known phone, watch or tablet is connected to the home network. The platform sees a network state rather than an outdoor coordinate. That makes Wi‑Fi attractive for a privacy-first “someone is home” rule, especially when the router and automation hub remain inside the home.
Wi‑Fi is not a person sensor. A phone left in the house can keep the device marked as home after its owner leaves, while a powered-off phone, randomized hardware address or sleeping device can look away even when the person is present. Treat router state as one signal, or combine it with an interior sensor, rather than assuming it is an identity-proofing system.

Bluetooth beacons
A fixed Bluetooth beacon can indicate that a compatible phone or tag is nearby. Because the signal is based on radio proximity to one beacon, it can provide a local presence cue without exposing a route or a set of outdoor coordinates. Beacons are useful near an entryway or in a specific room, but walls, metal, body placement and other radio sources change the effective range.

Motion sensors and media activity
Motion detectors, door sensors and activity from speakers or displays can corroborate that the home is occupied. Google Home specifically lists motion detectors and media activity among its presence signals. These sensors are valuable when a phone is absent, sleeping or not permitted to share location.
They generally answer “is there activity?” rather than “which named person is here?” A motion event in the kitchen cannot, by itself, distinguish a resident from a guest. Use per-person device signals when identity matters, and use environmental sensors as confirmation or as a household-level fallback.
Zone Name Only in Home Assistant
Home Assistant Companion documentation describes a Zone Name Only mode that sends only the zone name, or not_home, instead of exact coordinates. This preserves automations based on entering or leaving a zone while withholding latitude, longitude and fine-grained movement information from Home Assistant.
Home Assistant also supports exact GPS, disabled location, router-based tracking and Bluetooth-beacon tracking. Its privacy FAQ states that Home Assistant runs on hardware in your home and stores data locally. Local storage reduces cloud exposure, but it does not remove the need to review every integration, phone permission and remote-access feature.

Choose the least revealing signal that meets the requirement
Step 1: Write the trigger in plain language
Specify the result before choosing a sensor. “Turn off lights when everyone is away” needs a household state. “Open the gate when I am within 100 meters” needs a distance. “Show whether my child is at school” needs a second named zone. This prevents a broad location permission from being enabled for a simple home/away task.

Step 2: Start with a local signal
For a household-level state, try a compatible router integration, an interior motion sensor or a combination of both. If a particular person must be identified, add that person’s device as a tracker only if the automation truly depends on it. Bluetooth is a useful middle option when proximity to a fixed point is enough.
Step 3: Reduce location detail when GPS is unavoidable
If you need geofencing but not a map, configure the platform to report a zone label rather than exact coordinates where supported. In Home Assistant, choose Zone Name Only in the Companion app’s location-sensor settings. Keep exact GPS disabled for devices or automations that do not need it.
Step 4: Review permissions and retention
On each phone, check whether location is allowed all the time, only while using the app or not at all, and whether precise location is enabled. Review who can view presence history, how long events are retained and whether an optional cloud service receives the data. A local hub can limit where records travel, but a cloud-connected integration may still create an external copy.

Walk through an arrival, departure, a phone left at home, a dead battery and a guest visit. Record the state reported by each signal and set a sensible delay before acting on a single missed heartbeat. Presence is a probabilistic conclusion from device and sensor evidence, not a guaranteed statement about a person’s physical location.
What Google Home and Home Assistant expose
Google Home
Google Home can combine optional phone location with motion detectors and media activity from eligible smart-home devices. This allows a household presence state even when one signal is temporarily unavailable. Google’s published description says the app’s location behavior is limited to determining whether a person is inside the home geofence, rather than maintaining a history of everywhere that person has been.
Because phone location is optional, turning it off can change the result when no other eligible signal is active. If you rely on Google Home presence, verify which devices are contributing and whether a motion or media event is available to corroborate a person’s arrival.

Home Assistant
Home Assistant gives you a wider privacy/precision choice: exact GPS, a zone-name-only state, no location, router tracking or Bluetooth tracking. Its local-first design can keep records on your own hardware. Zigbee, Z-Wave, Matter, Thread and ESPHome devices can operate without internet access when the specific integration and setup support local operation.

The Companion app can report a gps_accuracy value in meters for exact trackers and provides a reporting threshold, but these controls do not create a universal accuracy guarantee.
Why presence automations think you are away
There is no authoritative cross-platform accuracy percentage or battery-life figure for these methods. Results vary with the phone, building, network, permissions and integration. Diagnose the specific signal instead of trusting a generic accuracy claim.
- Check the source state. Look at the raw tracker or sensor: is the phone connected to Wi‑Fi, is the beacon detected, and has motion been seen recently?
- Verify permissions. Confirm that the app can run in the background and has the location level required by the chosen mode. A zone-only setup still needs enough permission for the phone to determine its zone.
- Check device identity. Make sure the router is seeing the intended phone, not an old device entry, randomized address or family member’s tablet.
- Inspect the boundary. A small geofence can be crossed by GPS drift, while a large one can delay an exit. Adjust the zone only after confirming that permissions and source data are healthy.
- Combine independent signals. Require a Wi‑Fi state plus recent motion, or use a short confirmation delay, to avoid switching to away because of one missed update.
- Test the phone-left-behind case. If the phone remains connected while its owner leaves, device presence cannot identify the person. Add a second person-specific signal or use household occupancy logic.
Can presence detection tell who is home?
Only some signals are person-specific. A tracker associated with an individual phone can support “Alex is home,” while a motion sensor, media event or generic Wi‑Fi connection may support only “someone is home.” Bluetooth tags can identify a person if each tag is assigned and consistently carried, but radio range and battery condition still matter.
For shared homes, design automations around the consequence of an error. Unlocking a door or disabling an alarm deserves stronger confirmation than adjusting lights. Keep a household-level fallback separate from high-risk actions, and do not infer identity from an anonymous motion event.

- Define whether the automation needs home/away, a named zone, a distance or a coordinate.
- Prefer router, Bluetooth or local sensor signals when they satisfy that requirement.
- Use Zone Name Only when Home Assistant needs a zone state but not a map.
- Grant only the phone location permission and precision level required by the chosen method.
- Check which household members, guests and services can view presence history.
- Set retention limits where the platform allows them, and remove unused trackers.
- Review optional cloud access and remote-control features separately from local device operation.
- Re-test after changing a router, phone, operating-system permission or geofence boundary.
Common questions answered
Is geofencing the same as location history? No. Geofencing evaluates whether a device enters or exits a defined region; location history records a sequence of positions. A system can use a geofence event without presenting a travel map, but the required permissions and retention settings still deserve review.

Is Wi‑Fi presence accurate enough? It can be adequate for a low-risk home/away routine when the device remains with its owner and the router integration is reliable. It is not a substitute for GPS when you need an outdoor zone, distance or proof of a person’s location.
What is the most private way to detect someone at home? Use a local motion or door sensor for household occupancy, or a local router/Bluetooth signal for a person-associated device. If GPS is needed, report only a zone name and keep exact coordinates disabled.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can a guest trigger a presence automation without installing an app?
Yes, for household-level automations. Motion, door, media and other interior sensors can show that someone is active, but they generally cannot identify the guest by name. Person-specific routines require an assigned device or tag.
What happens if my phone is left at home?
A router or phone-based tracker may continue reporting home even after you leave. Treat that signal as device presence and combine it with another person-specific or environmental signal when the distinction matters.
Does disabling precise location stop every presence feature?
No. Router, Bluetooth, motion and media signals can continue independently. A GPS-based zone may still work in a reduced, zone-only mode if the operating system and integration provide enough permission to calculate the zone.
