The strongest published evidence is a 2026 paper that tested the current PhoneBot app on four Android phones: a used 2017 Honor 9, Motorola moto g 2025, Samsung Galaxy A16 5G, and Motorola moto g 2024. All four completed the paper’s reported sensing, motor communication, locomotion-policy inference, on-device vision, and human–robot interaction tests. That is a useful compatibility sample, not a universal guarantee.
PhoneBot here means the low-cost humanoid robot platform that reuses a smartphone, not the unrelated Australian refurbished-phone retailer with a similar name. Before committing a handset, check Android-app availability, required platform services, camera and inertial sensors, processing performance, Wi-Fi communication, and each feature you intend to use. The project’s current instructions remain the final authority because device support and app requirements can change.

What the published testing actually proves
The main evidence is a paper by Ruochen Hou, Quanyou Wang, Daniel Koh, and Dennis W. Hong, published on arXiv on October 6, 2026. It describes PhoneBot as “a low-cost, open-source humanoid robot platform that repurposes commodity smartphones as its primary sensing and computing unit.” The application was tested on four Android phones.
| Tested phone | What the paper reports | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Used Honor 9 (2017) | Completed IMU sensing, UDP motor communication, locomotion-policy inference, on-device vision, and human–robot interaction | ARCore SLAM was unavailable in the U.S. test context because Google services were unavailable on that Huawei device |
| Motorola moto g 2025 | Completed the reported sensing, communication, inference, vision, and interaction functions | This is one tested example, not a guaranteed minimum model |
| Samsung Galaxy A16 5G | Completed the reported sensing, communication, inference, vision, and interaction functions | This is one tested example, not a guaranteed minimum model |
| Motorola moto g 2024 | Completed the reported sensing, communication, inference, vision, and interaction functions | This is one tested example, not a guaranteed minimum model |
The paper says the phones’ CPU use was measured and that the application stack was CPU-bound, so it omits GPU details. The results therefore establish that these four handsets ran the demonstrated workload; they do not establish a universal Android version, processor, RAM, camera, or sensor threshold.

What remains unestablished
- No published statement says that every old Android phone is supported.
- No universal minimum Android version, CPU, RAM capacity, or storage requirement is provided in the available project material.
- The evidence does not establish iPhone support.
- Running the app does not mean every feature is available on every phone; ARCore SLAM depended on Google-service availability in the Honor 9 example.
A 2017 handset succeeding in the tests is encouraging for owners of older phones, but it should not be read as a promise that another phone from 2017—or any other year—will behave the same way.
Why “old” is not the deciding specification
PhoneBot assigns several demanding jobs to the phone. The handset is mounted on the robot’s torso and acts as the body inertial-measurement unit, camera, high-level computer, and user interface. It reads inertial data, runs a TensorFlow Lite locomotion policy, performs camera-based detection and pose estimation, and exchanges control data with the robot.
Those jobs stress different parts of a handset. A phone with a relatively modest processor may be adequate for one workload but fail to sustain vision and policy inference together. A handset can also have sufficient processing power yet lack a required sensor, have an incompatible Android app environment, or be unable to provide the platform services used by a particular feature.

The control and data path
- The phone’s IMU supplies motion data used by the robot software.
- The camera supplies frames for on-device detection and pose estimation.
- A TensorFlow Lite locomotion policy runs on the phone’s CPU or GPU; the paper reports the tested application stack as CPU-bound.
- The phone sends joint targets over Wi-Fi using UDP to a small onboard computer.
- The onboard computer forwards commands to the robot’s actuators and returns motor telemetry.
- Gamepad inputs can also travel through the Wi-Fi link.
There is no physical wired connection between the phone and the robot hardware in the architecture described by the paper. Wi-Fi is the control link, so a phone must maintain a reliable local connection and deliver data with enough consistency for the intended motion functions. Conversational and speech interaction additionally uses an external laptop AI backend, which is separate from the phone’s local sensing and control tasks.
Compatibility is feature-specific
Instead of asking only whether an old phone “works,” evaluate each PhoneBot function you need. The published tests show the following pattern:

| Function | What the phone must provide | Evidence and limitation |
|---|---|---|
| IMU sensing | Working accelerometer and gyroscope exposed to the Android app | Completed on all four tested Android phones; no universal sensor specification is published |
| UDP motor communication | Working Wi-Fi and an Android environment capable of the PhoneBot networking stack | Completed on all four tested phones; performance outside the tested devices is not quantified |
| Locomotion-policy inference | Enough sustained CPU or GPU capacity for the TensorFlow Lite model | Completed on all four tested phones; no minimum chipset or frame-rate threshold is stated |
| On-device vision | Usable camera, supported camera APIs, and enough processing headroom | Completed on all four phones; no camera-resolution or low-light requirement is published |
| Human–robot interaction | Working app, sensors, network, and any peripherals required by the chosen interaction mode | Completed on all four tested phones; exact feature-by-feature limits are not listed |
| ARCore SLAM | Compatible ARCore support and access to the required Google services | Unavailable on the tested Honor 9 in the U.S. context because Google services were unavailable on that Huawei device |
The ARCore result is the clearest warning against broad compatibility claims. The Honor 9 ran the other reported functions, but its missing Google services prevented ARCore SLAM. A phone that passes basic sensing and motor tests may therefore still fail a spatial-mapping feature.
How to assess an old phone before building around it
Use this checklist before mounting a handset or purchasing parts. It is a risk-reduction process, not an official substitute for the project’s current setup instructions.
1. Confirm the software environment
- Identify the exact Android version and model number, not just the marketing name.
- Verify that the current PhoneBot Android application can be installed on that model.
- Check whether the phone has access to platform services required by the features you want, particularly Google services for ARCore SLAM.
- Confirm that the handset is not restricted by an enterprise-management profile, carrier lock, damaged system partition, or unsupported regional firmware.
2. Check the physical sensors and camera
- Verify that the accelerometer and gyroscope are present and report stable values.
- Test the rear camera for focus, preview stability, and uninterrupted capture.
- Inspect the lens and camera glass; scratches, condensation, or a loose module can undermine vision even when the app launches.
- Make sure the phone can be rigidly mounted on the torso without covering the camera or introducing movement between the handset and the robot.
3. Check processing and thermal behavior
- Run the complete workload rather than testing only the app’s launch screen.
- Watch for sustained slowdown, dropped frames, app restarts, or heat-related shutdowns while sensing, vision, and policy inference run together.
- Remove unnecessary background applications and disable battery-saving behavior that pauses the app or its network connection.
- Use a healthy battery or a safe power arrangement; an aged battery can throttle the processor or shut down under load.
4. Check Wi-Fi locally
- Confirm that the phone can join the same local network used by the robot’s onboard computer.
- Verify that the phone can exchange the required UDP traffic; guest-network isolation, client isolation, or firewall rules can block local devices even when internet access works.
- Test telemetry and command exchange while the robot is stationary before attempting locomotion.
5. Test the exact features you plan to use
Do not stop after confirming that the app opens. Test IMU readings, camera processing, policy inference, UDP communication, and any ARCore or interaction feature separately. Record which functions pass on the specific handset. This matters because the published Honor 9 result demonstrates that partial compatibility is possible.
A practical setup sequence
The available paper describes the architecture but does not publish a complete, universal, click-by-click installation procedure. The following sequence organizes the checks a builder should perform using the project’s current instructions.
- Read the current project documentation. Confirm the supported app package, robot firmware, network arrangement, and any version-specific instructions before buying or modifying hardware.
- Prepare the handset. Update Android within the model’s supported range, remove avoidable background restrictions, charge the battery, and back up personal data if the phone will be dedicated to the robot.
- Install and launch the current PhoneBot app. Grant only the permissions the app requests and verify that the app recognizes the camera and motion sensors.
- Mount the phone securely. Place it on the torso as specified by the project so the IMU orientation and camera viewpoint match the software’s assumptions. Prevent wobble; a loose mount can look like body motion to the controller.
- Join the robot’s Wi-Fi network. Put the phone and onboard computer on the same local network and use the project’s documented network settings. Do not assume that an internet connection alone proves local UDP reachability.
- Run stationary diagnostics. Confirm live IMU data, camera preview or detection, and motor telemetry before enabling movement. Check that the app reports the expected robot connection.
- Validate locomotion-policy inference. Run the policy without commanding a walk, monitor heat and responsiveness, and stop if the phone throttles, crashes, or loses the network.
- Validate movement conservatively. Keep the robot supported or restrained for initial commands, then test small motions in a clear area. Increase complexity only after telemetry and command timing remain stable.
- Enable optional features separately. Test ARCore SLAM, speech, conversational interaction, or gamepad input one at a time. Speech and conversation use an external laptop AI backend in the described design, so that backend must be available as well.
Comparing a candidate phone with the tested examples
The four models are useful reference points, not a ranked buying list. The used Honor 9 shows that a 2017 Android handset can carry the core workload. The moto g 2024, moto g 2025, and Galaxy A16 5G show that relatively inexpensive prepaid phones can also do so. None of those examples supplies a cutoff for other models.

Compare a candidate against the examples on six axes: whether the current Android app installs; whether required services such as Google services are present; whether accelerometer and gyroscope readings are available; whether the camera works through supported Android APIs; whether the processor sustains the TensorFlow Lite and vision workload; and whether Wi-Fi carries local UDP traffic reliably. A newer model can still fail one of these checks, while an older model can pass several and fail only an optional feature.

What else is part of the system
The smartphone is the central sensing and computing unit, but it is not the entire robot. PhoneBot’s described architecture includes a small onboard computer between the phone and the actuators. The platform has 13 actuators or joints, specified in the paper as DYNAMIXEL XL430-W250-T units. Those robot components are assembly requirements, not phone compatibility requirements.
Likewise, speech and conversational interaction are not wholly local to the handset. The described design uses an external laptop AI backend. If that feature matters, test the laptop service and its network route separately from the phone’s camera, IMU, and locomotion checks. A phone can pass every local test and still deliver no conversation if the external backend is unavailable.
Keep a compatibility test record
A short test log prevents a vague “it seemed to work” decision. Write down the handset model, Android build, service availability, battery condition, and date. Mark separate pass or fail results for sensor readings, camera capture, policy inference, UDP commands, telemetry, ARCore SLAM, gamepad input, and speech or conversation. Note whether failures occur immediately or only after heat builds up.

How to make a go/no-go decision
Proceed with an old Android phone when
- The current app installs on the exact model and Android build.
- IMU, camera, CPU inference, and Wi-Fi tests all pass under sustained load.
- Your required optional features—especially ARCore SLAM—also pass on that handset.
- The battery, mounting hardware, and network remain reliable during a complete stationary and restrained-motion test.
Choose another phone when
- The app cannot be installed or required services are unavailable.
- The phone lacks a gyroscope or reliable camera access.
- It overheats, throttles, crashes, or drops the Wi-Fi link during the combined workload.
- You need ARCore SLAM but the handset lacks compatible ARCore support or the Google services it requires.
- You cannot verify the exact model because the listing, firmware, or device history is unclear.
The four published examples show that PhoneBot is not limited to new flagship phones: a used 2017 Honor 9 and three low-cost prepaid models completed the reported core functions. They do not justify the broader claim that any old smartphone will work. Treat the examples as reference points, test the exact handset, and re-check the project’s documentation before committing to a build.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will my old Android phone work with PhoneBot?
Possibly, but there is no universal guarantee. Four tested Android phones—including a used 2017 Honor 9—completed the reported core functions. Check the exact model, Android build, sensors, camera, sustained processing, Wi-Fi UDP traffic, and every feature you need.
Does PhoneBot support iPhones?
The published application tests cover Android phones only. They do not establish iPhone support, so do not assume an iPhone can run the current app without explicit confirmation in the project’s current instructions.

Why did the Honor 9 pass some tests but fail ARCore SLAM?
The Honor 9 completed IMU, motor communication, policy inference, vision, and interaction tests, but ARCore SLAM was unavailable in the U.S. test context because Google services were unavailable on that Huawei device. Compatibility therefore varies by feature and service availability.
Does the phone plug directly into the robot?
No physical wired phone-to-robot connection is described. The phone communicates over Wi-Fi with a small onboard computer using UDP for joint targets, telemetry, and gamepad inputs; that computer forwards commands to the actuators.
Does the phone need a powerful GPU?
The locomotion policy can run on the phone CPU or GPU, but the paper reports the tested application stack as CPU-bound and omits GPU details. Test sustained combined sensing, vision, and inference on the exact handset rather than judging it by a GPU label.
Can I use PhoneBot without an external computer?
Core phone sensing, policy inference, vision, and robot communication are described as running through the phone and onboard robot computer. Speech and conversational interaction additionally use an external laptop AI backend, so those features require that backend and its network path.
What should I test before letting the robot walk?
First verify app installation, IMU readings, camera processing, policy inference, Wi-Fi connection, UDP commands, and motor telemetry while stationary. Then perform restrained, small-motion tests and watch for heat, throttling, crashes, dropped frames, or network loss before increasing movement.
Are the tested Motorola and Samsung models guaranteed recommendations?
No. The Motorola moto g 2025, Samsung Galaxy A16 5G, and Motorola moto g 2024 are documented test examples. Their success does not create a universal guarantee for every regional variant, firmware version, or similarly named model.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: PhoneBot is not proven to work with any old smartphone. Four Android phones— including a used 2017 Honor 9 and three low-cost models—ran the reported core workload, but ARCore SLAM was unavailable on the Honor 9 because Google services were missing in the described U.S. test. Check the exact Android handset, sensors, camera, sustained CPU behavior, platform services, and local Wi-Fi, then test every feature you plan to use. Reconfirm the project’s current instructions before buying hardware or relying on a phone for a build.
