Yes for Chrome extensions and core browser sync; not yet confirmed for Chrome-style profiles. Opera Air can install extensions from the Chrome Web Store through Opera’s documented add-on process, because Opera is built on Chromium. Signing in to an Opera account can synchronize bookmarks, open tabs, Speed Dial, settings, history, passwords and, where offered, pinboards. That is Opera Sync—not Google Chrome Sync—and it does not establish that a complete Chrome profile, extension collection or extension data will migrate automatically.
Opera Air launched on October 15, 2026 with a deliberately minimal interface. Opera says, “Everything you want and need in a browser, however, can be added back in as needed.” The minimalist starting point changes what is visible by default, not the underlying ability to add browser tools.

For a Chrome switcher, the practical answer is therefore mixed: extensions are available, selected browsing data can follow you through an Opera account, and profile separation remains an item to verify in the particular Air build you install.
How to install Chrome extensions in Opera Air
Opera Help documents a specific bridge between the Chrome Web Store and Opera. You do not install a Chrome extension by downloading a random file and assuming it will be accepted; use Opera’s supported installation path.

Installation steps
- Open Opera Air’s Opera Add-ons store.
- Find and install the add-on named Install Chrome extensions.
- Open the Chrome Web Store in an Opera Air tab.
- Choose the extension you want to test.
- Click Add to Opera when Opera presents that option.
- Complete the installation in Opera Air’s extensions manager, then review the permissions requested by the extension.
The wording and button placement can change with an Air release, but the documented sequence is the important part: the compatibility add-on enables the Chrome Web Store listing to hand the package to Opera’s extension manager.
Why Chromium compatibility is not a guarantee
Opera’s developer documentation describes Opera as Chromium-based and says it can run CRX extension packages. It also documents a supported set of chrome.* APIs. Chromium gives Opera a substantial compatibility foundation, but it does not make Opera a copy of Chrome. An extension that relies on an API Opera does not implement, or that expects Chrome-specific behavior, may install yet lose a feature, show an error or fail to run.
Check an extension’s critical functions after installation rather than judging compatibility solely by whether its icon appears. Test sign-in, background operation, context-menu commands, downloads, notifications and any connection to another desktop application. Extensions that depend on enterprise policies, proprietary Chrome integrations or an API outside Opera’s supported set deserve extra scrutiny.

The important storage limitation
Opera’s permissions documentation explicitly says that storage.sync is not supported. This is a limitation of that particular Chrome extension API. It does not mean that every extension loses all storage, nor does it prove that an extension cannot keep local settings. It means an extension designed specifically around Chrome’s synchronized extension-storage API cannot rely on that API in Opera Air.

As a result, an extension may install successfully while its preferences, lists or account state remain local to Air, require a separate sign-in, or fail to synchronize as they did in Chrome. Treat extension behavior as an extension-by-extension compatibility question.
What Opera Air browser sync includes
Opera’s account FAQ says computer-browser sync includes bookmarks, tabs, Speed Dial, settings, history and passwords. Opera’s sync feature description also lists bookmarks, Speed Dials, history, passwords, open tabs and pinboards as selectable data. The exact checkboxes shown can depend on the current release, so inspect the sync settings instead of assuming every category is enabled.
Data categories to expect
- Bookmarks: saved pages can be synchronized between signed-in Opera browsers.
- Open tabs: tabs available on another signed-in device can be surfaced for continuation.
- Speed Dial: Opera’s new-tab shortcuts are included in the documented categories.
- Settings: supported browser preferences can follow the Opera account.
- History: browsing history is listed among computer-browser sync data.
- Passwords: saved passwords are included in Opera’s account-sync description.
- Pinboards: Opera’s sync page lists pinboards as selectable data.
Synchronization is account-based: sign in to the same Opera account on each Air installation and enable the categories you want. If a category is disabled on one device, its absence is not evidence that the service cannot sync it.

Chrome Sync and Opera Sync are different services. Opera’s documentation describes synchronization among Opera browsers using an Opera account; it does not promise to read a Google Chrome profile and reproduce it inside Air.

Plan to handle these items manually unless the individual extension or migration tool provides its own supported method:
- Installing your Chrome extensions in Opera Air.
- Extension-specific preferences, databases, blocked-site lists and saved workspace data.
- Extension account sessions and authentication tokens.
- Cookies and site sessions.
- Chrome-only profile settings, policies and browser customizations.
Even when an extension is available in both browsers, its local data may be protected by a browser-specific storage area or by the extension’s own account system. Signing into the extension again may restore cloud-backed data, but that behavior belongs to the extension, not to Opera Sync.
Does Opera Air support Chrome-style profiles?
A Chrome profile is a separable browser environment with its own history, cookies, extensions, settings and account state, normally switchable from a profile menu. The official Opera material available for Air documents local profile and extension-state folders, but it does not document a Chrome-style multi-profile manager for Air.

A current build could expose functionality that is not described in the pages consulted, or Opera could add a profile switcher later. Until Opera documents the feature or you can verify it in your installed build, do not make work/personal separation depend on Chrome-like profiles.

How to verify your installed build
- Open Opera Air’s main menu and look for an account or profile control that explicitly offers adding or switching browser profiles.
- Open the settings page and search for “profiles,” “people” or “separate browsing data.”
- Create a harmless test environment only if the interface clearly offers a new profile, then confirm that its history, cookies, extensions and settings are isolated.
- If no such control exists, treat the browser as a single profile and keep separate contexts through a method you can administer independently, such as distinct operating-system user accounts or separate browser installations.
Do not confuse the Opera account avatar used for synchronization with a Chrome-style local profile. An account can identify the user while browser data remains in one local environment.

A controlled migration avoids the assumption that “Chromium-based” means “Chrome profile-compatible.” Use this order so you can recover if an extension or setting behaves differently.
- Inventory Chrome. Record the extensions you actually use, their store pages, important permissions, saved bookmarks, open work tabs, passwords and any extension-specific data.
- Back up before changing browsers. Export bookmarks where Chrome permits it and retain any extension-provided export. Opera documents local profile and extension-state locations; preserve relevant local data before deleting or modifying the Chrome installation.
- Install Air and update it. Use the current stable build available to you, then install the Install Chrome extensions add-on from Opera’s add-ons store.
- Reinstall extensions deliberately. Add only the extensions you need, verify their publisher and permissions, and test core functions before relying on them for work.
- Sign in to Opera. Enable the sync categories you want, then allow time for the first synchronization to complete.
- Recreate browser organization. Import or rebuild bookmarks, Speed Dial entries and tab groups as needed; do not expect Chrome-only profile customizations to appear.
- Validate sensitive data. Confirm that passwords, cookies, extension accounts and business workflows work before making Air your only browser.

Troubleshooting common problems
The Chrome Web Store does not show “Add to Opera”
- Confirm that the Install Chrome extensions add-on is installed and enabled.
- Reload the store page after installing the add-on.
- Try the extension’s normal store listing rather than a developer-only package.
- If the button still does not appear, check whether the Air build or extension listing has changed; do not install an unknown CRX from an unofficial source.
The extension installs but a feature is broken
Check the extension’s permissions and test whether the failed function depends on a Chrome API Opera does not support. Contact the extension developer for Opera compatibility information, and keep a working Chrome installation available while you evaluate a replacement.
Extension settings disappeared
Installation does not prove that Chrome’s synchronized extension storage is available. Because Opera documents storage.sync as unsupported, look for the extension’s own export/import command or sign in to its service. If neither exists, assume the settings must be recreated.
Bookmarks or passwords are missing after signing in
Open Opera’s sync settings and confirm that the relevant category is enabled on both devices. Check that you used the same Opera account and allow the initial sync to finish. Chrome account data will not appear merely because Air uses Chromium.
You need strict work/personal separation
Do not rely on an unconfirmed Air profile switcher for confidential work. Verify isolation in your build first; if no local profile control is provided, use separately managed operating-system accounts or browser installations and test that cookies, history, extensions and passwords remain apart.
Bottom line for 2026
Opera Air is a viable Chromium-based destination for Chrome extension users, provided you follow Opera’s installation bridge and test extensions that depend on less-common APIs. Opera Sync can carry the major browsing categories listed in Opera’s documentation—bookmarks, tabs, Speed Dial, settings, history, passwords and pinboards—when you sign in to an Opera account and enable them. It is not Google Chrome Sync, so a Chrome profile and its extension state should not be treated as portable by default. Most importantly for work/personal workflows, Opera has not confirmed a Chrome-style multi-profile manager for Air in the current official material; verify the build or maintain separation outside the browser.
