The claim that teens use ChatGPT for under 15 minutes a day is not confirmed by the sources available for this article: the original OpenAI statement, data and methodology could not be verified. Separate reports do document safety concerns, but their own 15-minute figures refer to a social-media restriction pilot and a safety-test interaction—not teenagers’ typical daily ChatGPT use.
Is the under-15-minute ChatGPT figure confirmed?
No. The claim is attributed to OpenAI, but an original OpenAI post, report or dataset supporting it has not been verified. Without that source, it is not possible to establish which teens were counted, where they lived, how long the measurement period was, or whether the figure describes observed use, self-reported use or something else.

That means the figure should not be treated as an established average or as evidence that teens generally spend less than 15 minutes a day on ChatGPT. The missing methodology matters: a daily average can mean different things depending on the population, measurement window and definition of use.
What do the other 15-minute figures measure?
Two separate reports contain 15-minute figures, but neither measures typical daily ChatGPT use.

These figures answer different questions: one is a time limit imposed on social-media apps in a pilot, and the other is the length of a reported test conversation. Neither can substantiate the claim about how long teens typically use ChatGPT each day.
What concerns have independent testers reported?
The Youth AI Safety Institute describes ChatGPT for Teens as settings, prompts, classifiers and interface features applied to accounts known or suspected to belong to users aged 13 to 17. In its assessment, updated October 7, 2026, the Institute reported problems in its tests involving parental notifications, Study Hours controls, break reminders and privacy protections. - Study Hours: It reported that this feature could be bypassed by deleting a prompt prefix.
- Break reminders: The Institute said reminders were uncommon in its testing.
- Privacy: It assessed teen privacy protections as largely similar to those for adults.
Common Sense Media separately reported its own testing scenario in which a tester posing as a 13-year-old discussed self-harm with ChatGPT for 15 minutes without a parental alert. That result should be understood as the publisher’s report of a test, not a finding about how often teens use ChatGPT or a guarantee of how the product will behave for every account.
What can readers conclude about teen ChatGPT use?
The available evidence does not establish how much time teens spend using ChatGPT each day. The under-15-minute figure remains unverified, while the other reported 15-minute numbers concern different products or test conditions. Separately, the Youth AI Safety Institute and Common Sense Media have reported safety concerns based on their testing; those findings do not validate the daily-use claim.
