Hulu’s policy and NordVPN’s troubleshooting guidance address different things.
What Hulu’s policy means for VPN users
Hulu says its service does not work with anonymizers or proxy services. If Hulu identifies a user as using one, it says the user needs to disable it to stream. A VPN connection can therefore trigger a Hulu error or prevent a video from loading, even when the VPN itself appears connected.

NordVPN’s Hulu-specific support article acknowledges that users may encounter VPN-related errors or streaming content that does not load. Its suggested fixes may help diagnose connection or app problems, but they do not change Hulu’s policy or guarantee access. Hulu availability depends on more than the VPN server
Hulu’s location and account requirements are separate from whether a particular VPN connection loads a stream. Hulu says a subscriber must be located in the U.S. and have a U.S.-issued payment method to subscribe. Hulu says its on-demand service, including Hulu Premium, can stream within the U.S., Puerto Rico, and U.S. military bases. Live TV uses a Home network and location checks
For Hulu + Live TV, Hulu says subscribers must set a Home network within 30 days of signup. The Home network determines local channels. Mobile devices can stream away from Home if the subscriber checks in at Home every 30 days. Hulu’s Home network instructions

NordVPN says local live channels will not work on mobile devices because they require location services. A VPN should not be treated as a substitute for Hulu’s Home network, local-channel, or location requirements. NordVPN support

Hulu’s speed recommendations, published in September 2026, are 3 Mbps for its streaming library, 8 Mbps for live streams, and 16 Mbps for 4K content. What to try if Hulu gives you a VPN error
The following steps are suggestions from NordVPN’s support article, not independently verified fixes. They can help separate a VPN connection problem from an app, browser, device, or location issue; they cannot ensure Hulu will accept a VPN connection.
- Confirm the VPN is connected. Check the NordVPN app before opening Hulu. If the connection has dropped, reconnect and try Hulu again.
- Try another server in the same country. NordVPN suggests switching servers within the same country if Hulu reports a VPN error or content does not load.
- Restart the app or connection. Close and reopen Hulu; NordVPN also suggests restarting the device or connection.
- Check the app cache for your device. NordVPN advises clearing the Hulu app cache on Android. On iOS, it recommends reinstalling the streaming app rather than clearing its cache.
- Review location settings. Check that location services are available where the Hulu feature requires them, particularly for Live TV local channels on mobile.
- Look for conflicting network protections. NordVPN suggests checking third-party web protection and browser Secure DNS or DNS over HTTPS settings, as well as NordVPN protection features that could interfere.
- Try another device on the same network. If Hulu works there, the issue may be specific to the original device or app. If the same error persists, switching devices may not address Hulu’s VPN restriction.
NordVPN’s SmartPlay is described by NordVPN as enabled automatically in its VPN apps and as combining DNS changes with IP hiding and encrypted traffic.
