You do not need Ethernet backhaul: the router and satellites normally use Orbi’s wireless Enhanced Backhaul. You also do not need a subscription for ordinary routing, Wi-Fi, or mesh operation. NETGEAR Armor is an optional security service, with a 30-day trial documented in NETGEAR’s 2024 RBE773 technical specifications before a paid subscription is required.
Orbi 770 requirements at a glance
| Question | Answer | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Does it need a modem? | Yes. Connect the Orbi router to an existing modem, fiber ONT with Ethernet handoff, or ISP gateway. | Your ISP service must provide an Ethernet connection and the modem or gateway must support your subscribed speed. |
| Is Ethernet backhaul required? | No. Satellites use wireless Enhanced Backhaul by default. | Use Ethernet when walls, floors, distance, interference, or a detached building make the wireless link unreliable. |
| Is a monthly subscription required? | No for routing, Wi-Fi, and mesh functions. | Armor security and privacy features are optional and become paid after the applicable trial. |
| How fast are the wired ports? | Up to 2.5 Gbps, according to NETGEAR’s Orbi 770 specifications. | The modem, ISP plan, Ethernet cable, switch, and client device must all support the target rate. |
| What is in the three-pack? | One router, two satellites, power adapters, a quick-start guide, and an Ethernet cable. | Coverage and performance still depend on placement and building conditions. |
Why Orbi 770 needs a modem or gateway
The Orbi 770’s router accepts an Ethernet connection on its Internet (WAN) side; it does not translate the signal delivered over a cable or DSL line. A cable or DSL modem performs that conversion, giving the Orbi router a usable Ethernet connection. NETGEAR’s general mesh guidance is explicit that a mesh Wi-Fi system cannot be used by itself and still requires a modem for the ISP signal.

The normal connection is:
ISP line or fiber ONT → modem or ISP gateway → Orbi 770 router WAN port → Orbi satellites and wired devices

With cable service, the modem connects to the coaxial line and presents Ethernet to Orbi. With DSL, the DSL modem performs the equivalent conversion. Fiber installations commonly use an optical network terminal (ONT); when the ONT provides Ethernet, it fills the upstream role that a modem would fill in this setup. Some providers supply a combined modem-router gateway. You can connect Orbi to that gateway, subject to your ISP’s instructions about router or bridge operation.

Buying Orbi does not replace the ISP equipment, and Orbi cannot establish service if the modem is offline, the ISP has not activated it, or the WAN connection is incompatible with the plan. Keep the modem’s power supply and any required ISP authentication details available during installation.
Wireless Enhanced Backhaul: the default satellite link
Each Orbi satellite can automatically connect to the Orbi router, or to another satellite, over a wireless backhaul. The Orbi 770 uses Enhanced Backhaul with multi-link operation (MLO), combining 5 GHz and 6 GHz links to carry traffic between nodes. This is separate from the client connection your phone or laptop uses, so a satellite can serve nearby devices while maintaining its own mesh link.
For most homes, this is the simplest arrangement: place the router near the modem, place satellites where they still receive a strong signal from the router or another satellite, and let the system establish the backhaul wirelessly. No Ethernet cable needs to run between rooms, and no network switch is required merely to create a mesh.
Wireless backhaul is affected by the same physical conditions that affect Wi-Fi generally. Reinforced concrete, brick, metal ducting, multiple floors, long distances, appliances, and neighboring networks can reduce the quality of the inter-node link. A satellite that is too far away may show a connection but deliver lower throughput or intermittent service because it must relay data over a weak path.

When Ethernet backhaul is worth installing
Ethernet backhaul is an alternative, not a prerequisite. It is most useful when you can run cable and the wireless path is the limiting factor.
- Thick walls or floors: masonry and reinforced floors can attenuate 5 GHz and 6 GHz signals.
- Long distances: a far bedroom, basement, attic, garage, or detached office may be beyond a reliable wireless backhaul range.
- Interference: crowded apartment channels or nearby radio equipment can make a wired inter-node path more consistent.
- High sustained traffic: wired backhaul avoids using wireless airtime for traffic traveling between satellites, leaving more radio capacity for client devices.
- Buildings with existing cabling: Ethernet already installed between rooms can provide a predictable connection without experimenting with satellite placement.
In a typical home where satellites have a strong wireless connection, adding cable may not produce a noticeable improvement. Wired backhaul also does not increase an ISP plan’s capacity; it only removes the wireless hop between mesh nodes.
How to wire Orbi 770 satellites
NETGEAR documents both star and daisy-chain layouts. In a star layout, each satellite has its own Ethernet run back to the Orbi router or to a central switch. In a daisy chain, one satellite is connected through another satellite. Use the layout that matches your cabling, and make sure any intervening switch has ports rated at least 1 Gbps.
- Update firmware first. NETGEAR’s support guidance directs users to update Orbi firmware before configuring Ethernet backhaul. Complete the update for the router and satellites through the current Orbi management process, then allow the nodes to reboot.
- Choose the cable path. For a direct connection, run an Ethernet cable from a LAN port on the Orbi router to the satellite’s Ethernet port. For a star network with several rooms, connect the router to a switch, then connect each satellite to that switch.
- Power and synchronize the nodes. Keep each satellite powered and within a workable wireless range while initial setup or synchronization completes. Once the wired path is connected and recognized, you can move the satellite to its final location.
- Check the link. Confirm in the Orbi management interface that the satellite has an Ethernet or wired backhaul rather than a wireless one. If it remains wireless, test the cable and switch port, then restart the satellite after checking firmware.
A 2.5Gbps switch can be used when its ports and the attached Orbi ports negotiate at that rate. A 2.5Gbps switch is not mandatory: a 1Gbps switch meets NETGEAR’s minimum guidance, but it can cap a wired segment at approximately 1Gbps even when the Orbi ports and Internet service are faster. Use Cat5e or better cabling for multi-gig links, and remember that the slowest device in the path determines the negotiated speed.

What the 2.5Gbps ports and 11Gbps rating mean
NETGEAR advertises the Orbi 770 with wireless speeds of up to 11Gbps. That is a maximum aggregate wireless rating, not a promise that one phone, laptop, or speed-test server will receive 11Gbps. A client must support the relevant Wi-Fi generation and channel widths, and the radio environment, distance, building materials, and simultaneous traffic all affect the result.
The Orbi 770’s Ethernet ports support up to 2.5Gbps. To use a multi-gig Internet plan at its potential, every part of the chain must qualify:
- The ISP plan must provide more than 1Gbps.
- The cable modem, ONT handoff, or gateway must have a compatible multi-gig Ethernet port and firmware.
- The Ethernet cable and any switch must support the negotiated rate.
- The Orbi port and the client computer or access point must support 2.5Gbps.
- The test server and software must be capable of sending data at that rate.
If any element is limited to 1Gbps, the connection will normally negotiate at 1Gbps or less. The advertised 11Gbps figure and the coverage figure should therefore be treated as product-class maximums, not guaranteed household results. NETGEAR does not publish an independent test in the cited product material proving that every home will reach those values.

NETGEAR lists up to 2,750 square feet per RBE770 satellite. That is a per-satellite advertised figure; it should not be multiplied mechanically to claim a guaranteed three-pack area. The actual footprint depends on wall construction, floor plan, radio interference, device locations, and the service each device requires.

Start with the router near the modem and in an open, elevated position rather than inside a cabinet. Put a satellite between the router and the weak-coverage area, not inside the dead zone itself. If the satellite cannot maintain a strong backhaul, move it closer before adding another node. For a detached structure or a basement separated by dense materials, Ethernet backhaul is usually more dependable than placing a satellite at the edge of wireless range.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Does Orbi 770 require NETGEAR Armor?
No. Core Orbi routing, Wi-Fi access, satellite coordination, and ordinary Internet use do not depend on Armor. You can install and operate the system without enrolling in a recurring service.
Armor, powered by Bitdefender, adds security and privacy functions such as threat prevention and VPN features according to NETGEAR’s product information. NETGEAR’s 2024 RBE773 technical specifications document a 30-day free trial, after which Armor requires a paid subscription. Trial length, pricing, renewal terms, and feature availability can change, so check the offer shown for your region and hardware during setup.
Choose Armor only if its managed threat protection and privacy tools address a need that your existing endpoint security, firewall, VPN, or DNS service does not. Declining the trial does not disable the mesh’s basic wireless functions. If you start the trial, record the renewal date and review the account’s cancellation settings so an unwanted paid renewal does not surprise you.

Recommended setup paths
Standard home with cable or DSL
- Leave the modem connected to the ISP line and confirm that it is online.
- Connect an Ethernet cable from the modem’s Ethernet port to the Orbi router’s WAN/Internet port.
- Power the Orbi router, then place and synchronize the two satellites.
- Use wireless Enhanced Backhaul unless testing shows a persistent weak link.
Fiber service with an ONT
- Connect the Orbi router’s WAN port to the ONT’s Ethernet handoff or to the ISP gateway supplied after the ONT.
- Follow the ISP’s requirements for authentication, VLAN settings, or gateway mode; those requirements differ by provider.
- Complete Orbi setup and position satellites for a strong wireless backhaul, or run Ethernet where the building blocks the signal.
Home with Ethernet in the walls
- Update Orbi firmware before enabling wired backhaul.
- Connect the router to the central Ethernet switch, ensuring the switch ports are at least 1Gbps.
- Connect each satellite directly to the switch for a star topology, or connect a satellite through another satellite for a daisy chain.
- Verify that each satellite reports a wired connection and that the switch and cables negotiate the expected speed.
Troubleshooting common problems
Orbi shows Wi-Fi but no Internet
Check the modem or ONT first: its service or Internet indicator should be normal, and a computer connected directly to the upstream equipment should receive service if your ISP permits that test. Reseat the cable between the modem or gateway and the Orbi WAN port, restart the upstream device, and then restart Orbi. If the ISP requires a registered modem, account activation, or special gateway mode, those conditions must be resolved with the provider.
A satellite is offline or slow
Move the satellite closer to the router or to the preceding satellite and remove obstructions. Update firmware on every Orbi node. If the location remains difficult, connect Ethernet directly or through a switch and confirm that the link is reported as wired.
Wired backhaul is not recognized
Verify that firmware was updated before cabling, test with a known-good cable, and bypass the switch temporarily by connecting the satellite directly to the router. If direct wiring works, inspect the switch port, VLAN configuration, or cable run. A switch that supports only a faulty or disabled port will not provide backhaul, regardless of its advertised speed.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Speed is lower than expected
Test with a wired client first, then check the negotiated Ethernet rate. Compare the result with the ISP plan and modem capability before changing wireless settings. A 1Gbps modem or switch, an older client radio, a weak satellite link, or a busy test server can each explain a result below the 11Gbps wireless headline.
The practical decision
Buy or use Orbi 770 when you already have compatible ISP equipment that can hand off Ethernet. Keep the satellites wireless when placement is favorable and simplicity matters. Run Ethernet when the building or distance makes the wireless backhaul the bottleneck; a 1Gbps switch is sufficient for basic wired backhaul, while a 2.5Gbps switch preserves more multi-gig capacity. Treat Armor as an optional security subscription, not an operating requirement.
