No. NBA 2K26 does not support multiplayer cross-play between Xbox consoles and Windows PC. The Xbox Series X|S edition and the Windows PC edition are treated as separate game instances, so a player on a Windows computer cannot join an Xbox-console friend in an online match.
Windows PC players can cross-play with Steam users, while Xbox Series X|S players can cross-play with PlayStation 5 players. That distinction still applies when the PC copy comes through the Xbox app or PC Game Pass.

The short answer for Xbox-and-PC friends
If one person owns NBA 2K26 on an Xbox Series X|S console and the other plays on Windows PC, they cannot enter the same NBA 2K26 multiplayer session through cross-play. This is a platform restriction, not a setting that can be fixed by changing privacy, matchmaking or account options.

The practical choice is therefore based on your friends’ hardware: select the Xbox Series X|S version if you need to play with Xbox or PlayStation 5 console players, and select the Windows PC version if your group plays on Windows PC and Steam.
Which NBA 2K26 platforms can play together?

Cross-play availability is not the same as cross-progression. A platform pair can share online matches while still keeping saves, purchases or virtual currency separate. NBA 2K26’s Xbox and Windows PC versions have both limitations.
How NBA 2K26’s cross-play groups are organized
Windows PC and Steam form the PC pairing
For PC players, the documented cross-play relationship is between the Windows PC edition and Steam. If your friends use Steam, a Windows PC player is in the supported PC group described by 2K. The FAQ does not describe Windows PC as part of the Xbox-console matchmaking pool.
This means that the store or launcher used to obtain the PC copy does not turn it into an Xbox-console edition. A copy installed on Windows remains the Windows PC instance for online compatibility purposes.

Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation 5 form the console pairing
2K’s Crossplay and Cross Gen FAQ states that “PlayStation 5 and XBOX Series X|S are available for crossplay in NBA 2K26,” and that “any online game mode can enjoy this cross platform multiplayer between the two systems.” The supported console relationship is therefore broader than a single mode: a Series X|S player and a PS5 player can use the game’s online modes together, subject to each player having the appropriate online access and the mode itself being available.
Take-Two’s 2025 NBA 2K26 announcement narrows that promise to Gen 9 hardware: “Crossplay is only available for Gen 9 NBA 2K26 on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S.” Read the publisher’s announcement at Take-Two Interactive’s NBA 2K26 announcement.
Does Xbox Game Pass for PC let you play with Xbox-console users?
No. The official Xbox product page lists NBA 2K26 as available to play on PC through Game Pass, and 2K’s Windows PC information says the Standard Edition is playable through Xbox Game Pass or Xbox Ultimate Pass. Those statements describe subscription access to the Windows PC version; they do not add Xbox-console cross-play.
In other words, there are two separate questions:
- Can Game Pass provide the game on a Windows computer? Yes, where the applicable Game Pass plan and regional availability provide that access.
- Does that Windows copy join Xbox-console players? No. It remains the Windows PC instance.
Check the current platform and subscription terms on the official Xbox NBA 2K26 page. Game Pass availability, edition contents and subscription requirements can change by region or over time, but none of those commercial terms alter the documented platform grouping.

What happens to saves, progression and VC?
NBA 2K26 does not treat Xbox and Windows PC as one shared progression environment. The Windows PC FAQ explains that the versions are separate instances, so progress made on one does not carry over to the other. Starting or continuing a career, team build or other progression on Xbox therefore does not create the same progress file on Windows PC.
The VC wallet is also separate. 2K explicitly says, “The VC wallet isn’t shared between the XBOX and Windows PC versions of NBA 2K26.” Do not assume that VC purchased or earned on one platform will appear on the other simply because both copies use the same 2K account or Microsoft login.
These are two different limitations:
- Cross-play: Xbox-console and Windows PC players cannot share the same online session.
- Cross-progression and currency: progress and the VC wallet do not transfer between those versions.
Using the same email address, linking accounts or installing the game from the same Microsoft ecosystem cannot merge the instances described by 2K.
How to choose the right edition before buying
Choose Xbox Series X|S when your friends play on consoles
Buy or install the Xbox Series X|S edition if your priority is playing with friends on Xbox Series X|S or PlayStation 5. This places you in the Gen 9 console cross-play group identified by 2K and Take-Two. It is the relevant choice even if you also own a capable Windows computer, because the Windows edition belongs to the separate PC group.

Choose Windows PC when your friends use PC or Steam
Choose the Windows PC edition when your group plays on Windows PC and Steam. The Windows PC FAQ specifically identifies that pairing as the supported PC cross-play arrangement. A Game Pass PC installation can be a way to access the Windows edition, but it should be evaluated as a PC purchase or subscription decision rather than as a route into Xbox-console matchmaking.
Do not buy based only on the Xbox branding in the PC store
Microsoft’s Xbox branding can appear in the store, account and subscription experience for a Windows installation. That branding does not make the Windows build identical to the Xbox Series X|S build for NBA 2K26 online play. Verify the platform listed for the edition and compare it with the platform your friends actually use before spending money or committing to a subscription.

Use this sequence before you and a friend attempt to form a group:

- Identify the hardware. Record whether each player is on Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, Windows PC or Steam. “Xbox” in an account or store name is not enough to identify a console edition.
- Identify the game instance. On a computer, treat the installation as Windows PC even if it was downloaded through the Xbox app or supplied through PC Game Pass.
- Match the players to a documented pairing. Windows PC with Steam is the documented PC pairing; Xbox Series X|S with PlayStation 5 is the documented console pairing.
- Check the generation for console play. The publisher limits cross-play to Gen 9 NBA 2K26 on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. Do not assume an older console edition belongs to that cross-play group.
- Plan progression separately. If someone is changing from Xbox to Windows PC, expect separate progress and a separate VC wallet rather than a shared profile economy.
Common situations and what they mean
“I use the Xbox app on my gaming PC.”
The app is a storefront and account environment; it does not change the Windows PC game instance into an Xbox-console instance. You remain in the Windows PC grouping for NBA 2K26.

“My friend has an Xbox Series X, and I have a PC Game Pass copy.”
That combination is still Windows PC versus Xbox Series X|S, which is not a supported cross-play pair. The subscription supplies access on PC but does not provide the console build.
“We both use Microsoft accounts.”
Shared account-provider branding does not override 2K’s separate-instance rule. Account identity and platform compatibility are different systems.
“We want to play across consoles, but one person has an older Xbox.”
The published cross-play statement is specifically for Gen 9 NBA 2K26 on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. Check the edition and hardware generation rather than assuming every Xbox model is included.

That behavior is consistent with the documented separation between Xbox and Windows PC. Confirm which platform contains the original progress before reinstalling or making another purchase; moving between these versions does not create a shared VC wallet or carry progress across automatically.
What is and is not promised by the official documentation
The current official statements establish the platform pairings and the Xbox-to-Windows separation. They do not publish a numerical performance comparison, player-population statistic or guarantee that every future NBA 2K release will use the same arrangement. This article applies to NBA 2K26, using the Windows PC and cross-play FAQs updated July 8, 2026, plus Take-Two’s 2025 announcement.
For a later NBA 2K title, check that title’s own platform FAQ rather than extrapolating from NBA 2K26. Cross-play policies can be changed by the publisher, and a new edition may have different generation, launcher or progression rules.
Decision checklist
- Need to play with Xbox Series X|S friends? Use the Xbox Series X|S edition, not the Windows PC edition.
- Need to play with PS5 friends? Use a Gen 9 console edition: Xbox Series X|S or PS5.
- Need to play with Steam friends from a computer? Use the Windows PC edition and confirm that each friend is in the documented Windows PC/Steam group.
- Considering PC Game Pass? Treat it as Windows PC access; it does not add Xbox-console cross-play.
- Moving from Xbox to Windows PC? Plan for separate progress and a non-shared VC wallet.
