Usually, Nasdaq-100 inclusion has been associated with a positive short-term price response, but it is not a dependable rule for every stock. Nasdaq’s historical analysis found that additions, on average, outperformed the market around the announcement and after inclusion. Much of that move often occurred before index-tracking funds completed their required trades, so the announcement can matter more than the formal effective date.
That average is not proof that inclusion improves a company’s business. A 2015 study found changes in liquidity and investor attention after additions, but no significant improvement in operating performance or managerial effort. Treat inclusion as an event that can change demand, visibility and trading conditions—not as a guaranteed buy signal.

What the historical Nasdaq sample found
The clearest published evidence comes from Nasdaq’s March 18, 2021 analysis by Phil Mackintosh, with contributions from Robert Jankiewicz. It examined Nasdaq-100 additions from 2010 through 2020 and measured performance relative to the broader market. The figures describe that historical sample; they are not a current forecast for the next addition.
| Measure | Nasdaq’s reported result | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Event window | From five days before the announcement through the period after index inclusion | The window combines pre-announcement trading, the announcement reaction and post-inclusion performance. |
| Average market-adjusted performance | More than 1% above the market | Nasdaq excluded ZM, MRNA and PDD from this stated average because it considered them unusually strong COVID-era cases that benefited from conditions beyond inclusion. |
| Effect of the excluded names | About three percentage points of Nasdaq’s longer-run average when those names were included | This shows how sensitive an average can be to a few exceptional observations. |
| First-day breadth | 64% of additions rose on the first day after announcement | This is a sample proportion, not the probability that a particular future stock will rise. |
| Persistence in the sample | Average outperformance mostly held for at least about 90 days after indexers traded, then tended to move back toward the broad index after roughly six months | These are historical descriptions, not a timetable that every stock follows. |
The table illustrates why two statements can both be true: additions produced a positive average response, while a substantial minority fell immediately after the announcement. An average return describes the combined result; it does not describe the path of each constituent.

Why the announcement can matter more than the effective date
A Nasdaq-100 addition has at least two dates that investors should keep separate:
- Announcement date: Nasdaq identifies the company and communicates when the change will take effect.
- Effective or trade date: the index’s composition changes and funds that track it adjust their holdings.
Index-tracking funds generally have to bring their portfolios into line with the new weights. Other investors know this rule and can trade ahead of the scheduled rebalance. If enough participants anticipate future demand, the expected buying can be reflected in the stock before index funds place their orders. That is why an announcement reaction may be larger than the incremental price move on the actual trade date.
Nasdaq described the trade-date effect this way: “On the trade date, the market often absorbs the index flows with minimal additional market impact.” In practical terms, forced purchases can still be large, but they may not surprise a market that has already repositioned. A stock can therefore rise before inclusion, move little when the funds trade, or even decline if expectations were already more optimistic than the eventual demand.

What could drive the price response?
Liquidity and trading costs
The 2015 study by Susana Yu, Gwendolyn Webb and Kishore Tandon examined Nasdaq-100 additions with a multivariate analysis of announcement returns, liquidity, arbitrage risk, trading volume, spreads, analyst coverage and other factors. Its abstract reports that liquidity variables were significant and that average bid-ask spreads were lower after addition. A narrower spread reduces the cost of entering or exiting a position and can make the stock easier for larger institutions to trade.
Improved liquidity can support valuation, but it does not mean that every liquid stock must appreciate. Market conditions, the company’s news and the price already implied by expectations still influence the realized return.
Investor attention and analyst coverage
Index membership increases the number of professional investors who must monitor the company. The same study reports an increase in analyst coverage after additions. More coverage can bring the stock into additional screens, model portfolios and investment discussions. This attention may improve how quickly information is incorporated into the price and can increase trading activity.

Visibility without better operations
The study did not find significant evidence that inclusion improved operating performance or managerial effort. That distinction matters: a higher price can reflect stronger demand for the shares, lower trading frictions or greater awareness even when revenue, margins, productivity and strategy have not changed. Inclusion is an index event, not an operating upgrade.

Historical averages conceal several sources of dispersion:
- Expectations may be priced in early. Traders who anticipate the rebalance can buy before the announcement or sell into the later fund demand.
- Company news can dominate. Earnings, guidance, lawsuits, product announcements, regulation and financing decisions can overwhelm an index-related effect.
- The broad market can move at the same time. A market-adjusted return attempts to separate the stock’s movement from general conditions, but it cannot remove every confounding event.
- Index weights differ. A newly added company receives a weight based on the index methodology. A small weight creates less mechanical demand than a large one.
- Liquidity differs. The same dollar flow can have a larger temporary effect in a thinly traded stock than in a heavily traded one.
- Samples contain outliers. Nasdaq’s treatment of ZM, MRNA and PDD demonstrates that unusual economic conditions can materially alter an average.
For these reasons, the historical percentage of additions that rose should not be converted into a trading probability for a named company. It says how often the sample moved up over one particular window, not what will happen next time.

How Nasdaq-100 inclusion is scheduled
Nasdaq says the index is rebalanced annually in December. The composition can also change during the year when a constituent is acquired or no longer satisfies continued-eligibility requirements. An investor should therefore verify which event occurred and which date is relevant rather than assuming that every change is part of the December review.
The announcement, effective date and first full day of trading under the new composition can be different calendar events. A data feed that labels only one date may hide the period when expectations, arbitrage and fund orders were distributed.

- Identify the exact announcement. Confirm that Nasdaq announced a new constituent, rather than a routine weight change, replacement after an acquisition or an eligibility decision.
- Record both dates. Write down the public announcement time and the effective or trade date. Include the market session in which each occurred.
- Choose a benchmark and window before looking at the chart. Compare the stock with an appropriate broad-market or technology benchmark over pre-announcement and post-effective windows. Defining the window first reduces hindsight bias.
- Separate index information from company information. List earnings, guidance, product news, legal developments and macroeconomic events that could explain the same price move.
- Estimate the mechanical demand carefully. Consider the stock’s announced index weight, trading volume and typical spread. A large percentage weight in a very liquid stock can have a different impact from a small weight in a thinly traded one.
- Check whether the market already anticipated the change. Unusual volume or a sustained move before the announcement may indicate that expectations were incorporated early. That observation is descriptive, not proof of a particular trader’s activity.
- Evaluate the business separately. Read the company’s financial disclosures and outlook on their own merits. Do not treat index membership as evidence of better cash flow, profitability or execution.
- Set a time horizon and downside plan. A short-lived event effect and a long-term investment thesis are different decisions. Define what would invalidate the thesis before acting.
Announcement period versus trade date
| Event phase | What can happen | Question to ask |
|---|---|---|
| Before announcement | Rumors, eligibility screens or predictable review dates may lead some participants to position early. | Is the observed move unusual relative to the stock’s normal volatility and sector? |
| Announcement session | New information about membership can change expectations about future demand and visibility. | Did company-specific news arrive at the same time? |
| Between announcement and effective date | Arbitrageurs and index-aware funds may adjust positions while other investors rebalance risk. | Has the expected flow already been reflected in the price? |
| Effective or trade date | Index trackers execute orders, but the market may have anticipated those orders. | Was the price move larger than normal trading noise after controlling for the market? |
| Following months | Liquidity and attention may remain higher, while the initial event premium can fade. | Does the investment case still stand without the inclusion event? |
Common misconceptions
| Claim | More accurate interpretation |
|---|---|
| Every stock rises when it joins the Nasdaq-100. | No. The historical sample included declining additions as well as advancing ones. |
| The index fund purchase causes the entire move. | Some demand may be anticipated and priced before funds trade; company news and market conditions also matter. |
| Inclusion proves the company is fundamentally stronger. | Eligibility reflects index rules. The cited academic study found attention and liquidity changes, not significant improvements in operating performance or managerial effort. |
| The historical average is a forecast. | It is a result from additions during a defined 2010–2020 sample and a specified event window. |
| A positive announcement reaction guarantees a six-month gain. | Nasdaq’s description of performance reverting toward the broad index over roughly that period is a sample pattern, not a guarantee. |
| Nasdaq-100 results can be copied directly from another index. | Index selection rules, constituent characteristics and trading mechanics differ. Evidence about one index should not automatically be transferred to another. |
What the evidence does—and does not—establish
The most defensible conclusion is an association: Nasdaq-100 additions have tended to coincide with positive market-adjusted performance around the event, while individual outcomes vary. The Nasdaq analysis does not establish that inclusion alone caused every observed return. The 2015 study strengthens the case for liquidity and investor-attention channels, but its abstract does not provide effect sizes that can be used to calculate a guaranteed price premium.
Best Value
Nor does the evidence support a mechanical strategy that buys every announced addition. A strategy would need to account for announcement timing, execution costs, taxes, market exposure, the possibility of pre-positioning and the company’s own risk. Historical averages can inform a hypothesis; they cannot replace event-specific analysis.
Bottom line
Nasdaq-100 inclusion typically has been associated with a positive price response, especially around the announcement, but it does not reliably make every added stock rise. The effect often reflects anticipated index demand, improved liquidity and greater investor attention rather than a sudden improvement in the underlying business. Use the historical average as context, separate the announcement from the effective trade date, and evaluate the company independently of its index membership.
