Not in any material way. Antarctic sea ice is floating ocean ice, so it already displaces almost the amount of seawater represented by its eventual meltwater. Because the ice is fresh and seawater is salty and denser, melting it produces a small positive rise rather than a perfectly zero change. That effect is tiny compared with the rise caused when grounded Antarctic ice flows into the ocean or melts. Floating ice shelves also have little direct effect, but losing their braking force can accelerate inland glaciers and therefore increase sea-level rise indirectly.
The short answer: floating ice and land ice are different reservoirs
The phrase “Antarctic ice melt” can describe three physically different things. Sea ice forms when ocean water freezes and remains afloat. Ice shelves are floating extensions of glaciers attached to the Antarctic coast. The Antarctic ice sheet rests on land; its ice is grounded until it flows across the coast or melts.

That distinction resolves the common apparent contradiction: floating Antarctic ice can disappear without adding much water to the ocean, while a similar volume of ice removed from land adds new water directly.

Why ordinary floating sea ice barely changes sea level
Displacement explains the result
A floating object settles until it displaces water whose weight equals the object’s weight. Before a piece of sea ice melts, its submerged portion has already pushed aside seawater. After melting, the ice becomes liquid water occupying approximately the volume that was displaced. The waterline therefore changes little.

This is the same principle behind an ice cube in a glass of fresh water: the cube is already displacing the water represented by its melt. The level does not rise simply because the solid became liquid.
Antarctica adds a salinity-density caveat
Antarctic sea ice is made from relatively fresh water, while the surrounding ocean is salty. Fresh water is less dense than seawater. A given mass of fresh meltwater therefore occupies slightly more volume than the denser seawater it displaced while the ice was floating. NASA describes this as a small sea-level increase, unlike the idealized fresh-water ice-cube example.
The caveat does not overturn the headline answer. The difference is small, and it is dwarfed by the effect of adding water from ice that was previously sitting on land. No useful estimate should treat seasonal sea-ice loss as equivalent to the loss of an equal mass of grounded Antarctic ice.
Sea ice, ice shelves and the ice sheet: what changes when each one melts?
Sea ice: a floating seasonal cover
Sea ice forms from ocean water and floats around Antarctica. Its area and thickness vary seasonally, so a change in its extent is not automatically a measure of water newly added to the ocean. When this floating ice melts in place, the displacement principle controls the direct sea-level response. The salinity effect is real but minor.

Ice shelves: floating platforms that restrain glaciers
Ice shelves are thick floating platforms fed by glaciers that flowed from the continent. Their own melting or calving removes floating ice, so it contributes little directly to global mean sea level. Their mechanical role is more important: shelves press against sidewalls, islands and the seabed, providing buttressing that slows the inland ice behind them.
If a shelf thins, retreats or breaks apart, that resistance can weaken. Grounded glacier ice may then move faster toward the ocean. Once that formerly grounded ice enters seawater, it does add water and raises sea level. The indirect effect can therefore be substantial even though the shelf itself was already floating.
Antarctic ice sheet: the direct source of long-term rise
The ice sheet is land ice. It is not displacing ocean water while it remains grounded. Melting on the continent, surface runoff that reaches the ocean, and glacier flow across the grounding line all transfer additional water to the sea. This is the Antarctic process that matters most for global mean sea level.

The National Snow and Ice Data Center reports approximately 150 gigatons of Antarctic ice loss per year during 2002–2023, corresponding to about 0.4 millimetres per year of global sea-level rise. That figure describes measured Antarctic ice loss over that period; it is not a rate for every year in the future and it is not a measurement of floating sea-ice melt alone.

In practical terms, the reported contribution is attributable to loss from the grounded ice reservoir. Sea-ice melt and ice-shelf melt have little direct volume effect, although changes to shelves can influence the future rate at which grounded ice is discharged.
What does “60 metres of sea-level rise” mean?
The Antarctic ice sheet stores an enormous amount of land ice. The National Snow and Ice Data Center gives about 60 metres of potential global mean sea-level rise if the entire sheet melted. NASA’s Sea Level Change Portal gives a comparable estimate of roughly 58 metres.
These are end-member storage calculations: they answer how much water the ice contains if all of it were transferred to the ocean. They are not forecasts that Antarctica will lose the entire sheet in the near future. A complete melt would require changes over very long timescales, and the rate would not be constant.
The figures also refer to global mean sea level, an average over the world’s oceans. A local shoreline would not necessarily experience exactly that average because ocean circulation, gravity, vertical land movement and regional ice-loss patterns alter local water levels.

Why Antarctic ice is only one part of global sea-level change
NASA identifies two primary global mean sea-level drivers: additional freshwater from melting ice sheets and glaciers, and thermal expansion of warming seawater. Water expands as it warms, so the ocean can rise even without adding new water. Ice loss from Greenland, mountain glaciers and Antarctica contributes through the freshwater pathway.
This is why a claim that focuses only on Antarctic sea ice can be misleading. Floating sea ice is not the main global sea-level reservoir, and Antarctic changes are not the sole source of observed rise. The relevant question is whether the ice was floating or grounded and whether a process changes the future flow of grounded ice.
Common comparisons and where they fail
“Is Antarctic sea-ice melt just like an ice cube in a glass?”
It is close, but not exact. The displacement logic is the same, yet the glass analogy usually assumes fresh water on both sides. Antarctic sea ice is fresh and the surrounding ocean is salty, so the meltwater occupies slightly more volume than the seawater displaced before melting. The resulting rise is small rather than mathematically zero.
“If an ice shelf breaks up, does that immediately add its whole volume to sea level?”
No. The shelf was floating, so most of its volume was already accounted for by displacement. The concern is that losing the shelf’s buttressing can allow grounded ice upstream to accelerate. The later discharge of that grounded ice is the part that raises sea level directly.
“Does any Antarctic ice loss mean the same amount of sea-level rise?”
No. The mass, location and state of the ice matter. A tonne of floating sea ice has a very different immediate effect from a tonne of grounded ice. Reports should specify whether they describe sea ice, shelves or the grounded ice sheet.
How to read an Antarctic sea-level claim
- Check the reservoir: Is the statement about floating sea ice, an ice shelf or grounded ice?
- Check the mechanism: Is it direct water addition, displacement, or an indirect change in glacier flow?
- Check the metric: Is the number a global mean, a regional shoreline change or an ice-mass rate?
- Check the period: A rate measured from 2002–2023 should not be presented as a timeless constant.
- Check the timescale: A complete-sheet storage estimate is an end-member, not a near-term prediction.
What matters most for future sea-level rise
For immediate displacement, the loss of floating Antarctic sea ice is a minor factor. The consequential chain is different: a warming climate can affect the grounded ice sheet directly and can thin or remove ice shelves; weaker shelves may permit faster glacier flow; that grounded ice then enters the ocean and adds water.
Therefore, monitoring sea-ice extent alone cannot tell you how much Antarctic sea-level rise is coming. The condition of the grounded ice sheet and the restraining ice shelves is more informative for long-term risk. Sea ice remains important to the climate system for other reasons, but its melt should not be counted as though it were the direct loss of land ice.

Melting Antarctic sea ice does not materially raise global mean sea level because it is already floating and displacing seawater. Salinity makes the effect slightly positive, but still very small. The major Antarctic contribution comes from grounded ice-sheet loss. Ice shelves add little directly; their importance is that losing their buttressing can accelerate the grounded glaciers that do raise sea level.
