What is documented are independent maps of automated license-plate reader (ALPR) locations, including community reports and public-records projects. Those maps can help you investigate cameras near an address, but none should be treated as a complete or official Flock inventory.
What has—and has not—been confirmed about MapQuest
As of October 16, 2026, the available evidence does not establish that MapQuest has introduced a Flock-camera layer or neighborhood feature. No attributable statement from a MapQuest executive or official MapQuest document was located. The headline therefore should be read as an unverified claim, not as confirmation of a product launch.

That distinction matters because a map displayed inside a familiar mapping service could be mistaken for a vendor-verified, nationwide database. Public ALPR maps are assembled from reports and records, and their coverage changes as contributors add, correct, or remove entries.

Flock Safety cameras are automated license-plate readers. They capture a vehicle’s plate and additional characteristics as it passes, creating records that can be searched during investigations. The Associated Press reported that thousands of law-enforcement agencies in 49 U.S. states can search and share Flock data across jurisdictions.

Supporters describe the network as an investigative tool for locating vehicles connected with reported crimes. Privacy critics point to the scale of vehicle tracking, the possibility of misuse, retention and sharing practices, and the consequences of searching data about people who are not suspected of wrongdoing. The AP also reported that Flock announced platform changes in August 2026 amid criticism about privacy and documented misuse.
Where to look for nearby camera locations
Flock Safety does not publish an official public camera map, according to ALPR Tracker’s guide. In the absence of a single authoritative inventory, people use several independent sources:

Community and OpenStreetMap reports
FlockCameraLocations says its live map relies on OpenStreetMap contributor reports. It warns that locations may be incomplete or out of date. A pin can represent a contributor’s observation rather than a current confirmation from Flock or a local agency.
Documented ALPR inventories
FlockScanner labels ALPR entries and records vendor and camera-direction information where available. It reported 100,569 documented ALPR locations across 51 U.S. states on September 28, 2026. That is the count in FlockScanner’s documented map, not the number of every Flock camera installed in the country.

Public records and journalism
Other projects compile freedom-of-information disclosures, agency documents, procurement records, and reporting. These records can identify an installation that has not appeared on a community map, but they may also describe an earlier deployment or omit a camera that was later moved or removed.
How to evaluate a camera map
| Check | What to look for | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Source provenance | OpenStreetMap edits, named contributors, public records, agency disclosures, or journalism | Shows how a location was established and whether it can be checked |
| Freshness | A stated update date or refresh cadence | Camera deployments and road equipment change; an undated pin may be stale |
| Identity confidence | An explicit Flock vendor tag versus a generic ALPR label or unverified report | Not every ALPR is made by Flock |
| Direction metadata | A recorded facing direction, when available | Shows which traffic movement the camera may observe, but does not prove its field of view |
| Completeness warning | Clear language that the map is incomplete and non-authoritative | Prevents a missing pin from being interpreted as proof that no camera exists |
How to check a location without overreading the result
- Search the address or neighborhood in an independent Flock or ALPR map and note the map’s stated coverage area and update date.
- Open each nearby entry and record whether it identifies Flock specifically, gives a source, and includes a direction or installation date.
- Cross-check the entry against local government notices, procurement documents, public-records releases, or reliable local reporting when the distinction matters.
- Interpret a blank map cautiously. A missing marker means only that the publisher has no documented entry; it does not establish that the area is camera-free.
- Report corrections through the map’s stated channel if you can document a moved, removed, mislabeled, or newly installed camera.
Why map coverage is difficult to make complete
Camera inventories are assembled from different kinds of evidence: an observer may report a roadside unit, an OpenStreetMap contributor may add a point, an agency may disclose a contract, and a journalist may identify a deployment in records. These sources use different names and dates. A generic “ALPR” entry may not identify the vendor, while a vendor label may be based on community tagging rather than a current confirmation.

- [24/7 Parking Mode* & G-Sensor] Enjoy round-the-clock protection with two parking modes: time-lapse recording for continuous low-bitrate monitoring and G-sensor mode that records when collision is detected. The car security camera with G-sensor automatically locks important clips, ensuring crucial evidence is safely preserved even while your vehicle is parked.(*Hardwire kit needed.)
Direction information is also limited. Even when a map records which way a unit faces, that metadata does not establish the camera’s exact detection range, whether it is operating, or how long captured data is retained.

The separate 2026 security dispute
A 2026 dispute involved researcher Joshua Michael’s map and Flock’s response. Claims about exposed databases or a breach are contested and should not be presented as settled facts. Distinguish a publicly viewable location map from an allegation that protected customer data was exposed, and attribute each side’s statements precisely.
What this means for the MapQuest headline
There is currently no verified basis to say that MapQuest launched a Flock-camera map. The reliable, narrower conclusion is that independent projects can show documented Flock or other ALPR locations, with uneven coverage and varying levels of confirmation. If MapQuest later publishes an official feature, its documentation should explain the data source, update schedule, vendor-identification rules, direction metadata, and limitations. Until then, treat any MapQuest screenshot or listing as something to verify rather than proof of an official nationwide inventory.
