Yes—Mac Dictation can work without an internet connection, but only when your Mac’s Dictation settings say that general-text Dictation is processed on the device. That same setting determines the main privacy trade-off. With on-device processing, Apple says your audio and transcripts stay on the Mac and are not sent to Siri servers. If the setting requires an internet connection, the words you dictate are sent to Apple for server processing.
Do not judge the data path by the microphone icon alone. Open the Dictation panel and read its explanatory text; availability, language support and processing behavior vary by macOS configuration, language and region.

How to tell whether your Mac Dictation is offline
macOS exposes the answer in the Dictation settings rather than through a separate “offline mode” switch. The wording can differ with the macOS version, language and region, so read the current description shown on your Mac.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Open the Apple menu and choose System Settings.
- Select Keyboard in the sidebar.
- Open Dictation.
- Read the explanatory text below the Dictation control. Apple says this text identifies whether an internet connection is required and whether voice inputs and transcripts for general-text Dictation are processed on the device and not sent to Siri servers.
If the text explicitly says processing occurs on the device, that is Apple’s indication that general-text Dictation can operate offline. If it says an internet connection is needed, assume the recognition request uses Apple’s servers. The setting is the authoritative check; a working microphone or a visible dictation cursor does not prove that recognition is happening locally.

What “offline” covers
This qualification applies to standard, general-text Dictation—the feature you invoke in a text field in apps such as a document editor, message composer or web form. It does not mean every speech feature on the Mac is offline, nor does it guarantee that every language has the same processing option. Apple states that Dictation availability and features vary by language and region.
What happens to your voice in each processing mode
| Setting shown in Keyboard > Dictation | Where recognition occurs | What Apple says about audio and transcripts | Practical privacy meaning |
|---|---|---|---|
| On-device processing indicated | On the Mac | Audio and transcripts are processed on the device and are not sent to Siri servers. | Speech recognition can continue without an internet connection, subject to the language and feature support shown on your Mac. |
| Internet connection required or on-device processing not indicated | Apple servers | The things you dictate are sent to Apple for processing. Apple says they are not stored unless you opt in to Improve Siri and Dictation. | Your dictated content leaves the Mac during recognition, so a network connection and Apple’s server processing are part of the data path. |
Apple’s privacy wording is conditional: “When you use Dictation, your device will indicate in Keyboard Settings if your audio and transcripts are processed on your device and not sent to Apple servers. Otherwise, the things you dictate are sent to and processed on the server, but will not be stored unless you opt in to Improve Siri and Dictation.” The distinction is therefore not simply “Dictation is private” or “Dictation is cloud-based.” It depends on the mode your Mac reports.
How to verify the setting before dictating sensitive material
Use this check whenever you change macOS versions, switch languages, travel to another region or configure a new Mac. A feature can have different availability or processing requirements under those conditions.
- Open Apple menu > System Settings > Keyboard > Dictation.
- Read the complete explanatory paragraph, not just the Dictation on/off control.
- Look specifically for language saying that processing is on the device and that voice inputs and transcripts are not sent to Siri servers.
- If the panel says an internet connection is required, treat dictated text as a server request and avoid entering information you do not want transmitted.
- For a stronger offline check, disconnect the Mac from Wi-Fi and Ethernet only after the panel has explicitly identified on-device processing, then dictate a harmless test sentence in a local text field.
The offline test is a confirmation of behavior, not a replacement for reading the setting. Do not infer privacy from the microphone animation, the absence of an obvious network warning or the fact that text appears quickly.

Is Apple retaining your dictation?
Server requests and optional improvement sharing
When recognition is server-based, Apple says the dictated material is not stored unless you opt in to Improve Siri & Dictation. That opt-in is separate from simply enabling Dictation. To review it, open System Settings > Privacy & Security > Analytics & Improvements, then inspect Improve Siri & Dictation.
Turn the setting off if you do not want to share audio recordings for product improvement. Apple says that people who opt in may have a sample of recordings reviewed. Because the control is an analytics and improvement preference, check it after restoring a Mac, changing Apple settings or joining an organization-managed device; a policy or configuration change can alter the choice.
Request history and retention
Apple’s privacy policy describes request history that can include transcripts and related request data. It says this history is associated with a random, device-generated identifier rather than your Apple Account. The identifier rotates multiple times per hour.
Apple says request history may be retained for up to two years to develop and improve Siri, Dictation, Search and limited other language-processing functionality. A small subset selected for review may be kept longer. Consequently, “not stored” should be read in context: Apple’s statement about not storing the things you dictate applies to server processing when you have not opted in to Improve Siri & Dictation, while the broader policy explains how request history and reviewed samples can be retained in applicable circumstances.

Context can accompany a request
Speech is not necessarily the only information involved in a Siri or Dictation request. Apple lists contextual data that may be sent, including contact names and relationships, names of installed apps, device names, Home accessories, Photos labels and Reminders list names. Apple says this information is associated with a random identifier that is not tied to your Apple Account, is not used to build a marketing profile and is not sold.
This context can matter even when the sentence itself seems harmless. A dictated name, application command or reminder may be interpreted using information already present on the Mac. If the Dictation panel does not promise on-device processing, consider both the spoken words and the surrounding context before dictating confidential content.
What on-device processing does—and does not—guarantee
Apple describes on-device Dictation as processing completely offline. That is the strongest privacy mode available in the built-in feature because the recognition step does not require sending audio and transcripts to Siri servers. It does not, however, make every other Mac service offline or erase data you deliberately place in a cloud-synced document, email account or third-party app after the text is inserted.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Once Dictation has produced text, the destination app controls what happens next. A note saved to a synchronized account, a message sent to a recipient or a document uploaded to a collaboration service follows that service’s own privacy rules. On-device speech recognition protects the speech-processing step; it is not a blanket privacy guarantee for the entire workflow.

Availability and behavior limits
Language and region
Apple says Dictation is not available in all languages or regions and that features vary. A language may be available for typing but lack the same Dictation behavior, or it may require an internet connection when another language supports on-device processing. Always check the setting after selecting a language rather than assuming that one language’s privacy mode applies to all of them.
Voice Control conflict
Standard Dictation is unavailable while Voice Control is on because Voice Control supplies the dictation function instead. If the ordinary Dictation control is missing or behaves unexpectedly, open System Settings > Accessibility > Voice Control and check whether Voice Control is enabled. Decide which speech feature you need before troubleshooting network behavior.
Silence timeout
Apple says Dictation stops automatically after 30 seconds without detected speech. That is a silence timeout, not a maximum length for continuous speaking: Apple also says you can dictate text without a length timeout while speech continues. If a long passage stops, resume Dictation and speak continuously enough for macOS to keep detecting speech.
What to do when Dictation requires the internet
If the Dictation panel does not identify on-device processing, you have three practical choices.
Best Value
- Use it with the network: accept that audio and dictated content are sent to Apple for recognition, then review the Improve Siri & Dictation preference.
- Change the supported language or configuration: only if your work allows it and the Dictation panel confirms on-device processing for that choice. Do not assume switching languages will create an offline mode; verify the text each time.
- Choose a different workflow: for highly sensitive material, type manually or use a speech-recognition tool whose documentation explicitly states that recognition is local and explains retention, telemetry and account requirements.
Do not rely on airplane mode as your only privacy control. A failed request proves that a connection was unavailable, but it does not tell you what would have been transmitted when the connection was restored. The setting’s on-device statement is the meaningful assurance.
How to evaluate an alternative speech tool
If Apple’s built-in mode does not meet your needs, compare tools on the properties that determine actual exposure rather than on a generic “AI transcription” label.
| Question | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Is recognition on-device, or does audio go to a cloud service? | Local processing keeps the recognition request on the computer; cloud processing requires transmission. |
| Is offline mode explicit and enforced? | A marketing claim is weaker than a setting or technical document that states what happens when the network is unavailable. |
| How long are audio and transcripts retained? | Look for ordinary request retention, reviewed samples and deletion controls—not just a promise that data is “secure.” |
| What telemetry and account are required? | Usage analytics, identifiers, contact access and account linkage can reveal context beyond the spoken sentence. |
| Which languages work offline? | Offline support often differs by language, region and operating-system version. |
| Where does the text go after recognition? | App integration, synchronization and sharing can create a second data path after speech has become text. |
The built-in Mac feature is attractive when its own panel confirms on-device processing and your language is supported. If it instead requires the internet, the correct decision depends on whether sending the content to Apple is acceptable for the specific document, conversation or workplace policy.
