A capture can remain on your computer or clipboard unless you choose an online action. However, any image that is uploaded to Lightshot’s website is public to anyone who enters its URL, according to Lightshot’s privacy policy. It is sharing infrastructure, not secure storage.
What happens when you take a Lightshot screenshot?
Lightshot’s documented desktop workflow has two stages: select an area, then choose what to do with the selected image. Uploading is one possible destination, not an automatic consequence of selecting pixels.

Lightshot also documents a shortcut behavior in which holding Ctrl while beginning a selection copies the image when the mouse button is released. That is a local clipboard operation, not the upload command.
Does Lightshot upload every screenshot?
No. The separate Ctrl+D (Windows) or Command+D (Mac) command is the documented upload path. Ctrl+S/Command+S writes a file to your computer, and Ctrl+C/Command+C copies the image to the clipboard. If you never invoke upload or an online-edit action, the hotkeys documentation does not say that Lightshot transmits every capture automatically.

There is an important distinction between “capture” and “online action.” Pressing the capture shortcut creates a selection. Choosing Edit online sends that selection to Lightshot’s web editor, just as choosing Upload sends it to the hosted sharing service. For confidential material, avoid both online commands; use local save or clipboard copy instead.
What privacy does an uploaded image have?
Lightshot’s privacy policy makes a broad statement: every image uploaded to its website is public, including images uploaded without an account and images uploaded to an account gallery. Each image receives its own URL, and anyone who enters that exact URL can view it. The policy says the website is intended for sharing images, not as a secure platform or private image-storage system.
“Public” here does not necessarily mean that the image is listed in a searchable public feed. It means that possession of the image URL is sufficient for access. Treat the URL as a public sharing link: do not put passwords, API keys, personal documents, customer data or private conversations in a screenshot you plan to upload.
An account does not change that policy statement. The account gallery aggregates images posted through the account; it is not described as a protected vault.

For a sensitive screenshot, the safest documented choice is to save it locally, or copy it only into an application you control. If you need to send it to someone else, use a sharing system that provides the access controls your project requires rather than assuming a Lightshot URL is private.

How to avoid an accidental upload
- Take the capture and drag the selection around the area you need.
- Before clicking any sharing or editor icon, decide whether the image contains information that should leave your device.
- For a private image, press Ctrl+S on Windows or Command+S on Mac and confirm the destination folder. If you have not saved before, Lightshot uses Documents according to its hotkeys documentation.
- Alternatively, press Ctrl+C or Command+C and paste into a trusted local application.
- Do not press Ctrl+D/Command+D, and do not choose the online editor, for material that must remain private.
- After saving, check the resulting file with your operating system’s file manager before attaching it to email, an issue tracker or a chat.
Browser extensions can present different buttons and menus from the desktop application. The shortcut table above describes the desktop hotkeys page; check the controls shown by the specific Lightshot extension or app you installed before relying on a keyboard shortcut.
If you already uploaded private information
Lightshot’s FAQ says you can request removal by emailing [email protected] or by pressing the abuse button beneath the image. The FAQ does not provide a removal timeline or promise a particular outcome, so submit the request as soon as possible and keep the image URL and a description of the exposed information.
- Open the hosted image while you still have its URL.
- Use the abuse button beneath the image, or email [email protected] with the URL and explain that it contains private information.
- Rotate or revoke any credential visible in the screenshot. Removing an image does not undo a password, token or session cookie that someone may already have copied.
- Ask recipients not to redistribute the URL, and replace the screenshot in any tickets, documents or chats where you posted it.
Do not claim that deletion is immediate or guaranteed: Lightshot’s FAQ does not specify how quickly removal occurs, and the reviewed pages do not document a confirmed deletion process for anonymous uploads.
Accounts, galleries and anonymous uploads
Lightshot’s privacy policy says an account is not required to upload an image. Its FAQ separately says that screenshot history requires a prntscr.com account. These statements describe different functions: an upload can be made without signing in, while the account-based history or gallery feature requires an account. Signing in should not be interpreted as making an uploaded image private.
The official pages reviewed do not state how long uploaded images are retained. They also do not give a retention schedule or a verified deletion result for uploads made without an account. If retention duration is a requirement for your organization, obtain a current written answer from the service or select a platform with an explicit retention and access policy.

What Lightshot’s product description tells you
Lightshot’s product page describes uploading an image to a server to obtain a short link. It lists availability for Windows, Mac, Chrome, Firefox, Internet Explorer and Opera. That product description explains the convenience of hosted sharing; the privacy policy supplies the more important security qualification: uploaded images are accessible to anyone who enters their URL.
The policy and FAQ pages display a 2009–2022 footer without a visible revision date. If you are maintaining a long-lived security guide, recheck the current wording before relying on it for a compliance decision. The direct operational rule remains simple: local save and clipboard copy are separate from upload, while an upload should be treated as public.

Troubleshooting common Lightshot privacy problems
“I pressed the capture key and a link appeared.”
Check whether you used the upload command or clicked a sharing control after selecting the area. The documented upload shortcuts are Ctrl+D and Command+D; capture itself is a separate action. If a link was generated, treat that image as uploaded and public.

“Ctrl+S did not save where I expected.”
Lightshot saves to the most recent folder, or to Documents when no previous folder exists. Use the operating system’s file search and Lightshot’s save dialog to confirm the destination before sharing the file.
“I need to annotate a confidential image.”
Ctrl+E/Command+E opens the online editor and therefore transmits the selection. Annotate a local copy in an offline or trusted local editor instead.
“I uploaded without signing in.”
An account is not required for upload according to the privacy policy. The image is still covered by the policy’s public-URL statement. Use the abuse button or [email protected] to request removal.
“Support has not removed the image yet.”
The FAQ provides a contact route but no response or deletion timeline. Follow up with the original URL, preserve evidence for your incident record and rotate any exposed secrets immediately.
