Lenovo chairman and chief executive Yang Yuanqing described the closing as “Today we achieved a historic milestone for Lenovo and for Motorola – and together we are ready to compete, grow and win in the global smartphone market.” The quote is from Lenovo’s 30 October 2014 acquisition announcement.
The practical distinction is that Lenovo is the parent company, while Motorola remains the main consumer-facing phone brand in Lenovo’s current portfolio. So a Motorola phone is part of Lenovo’s smartphone business, but it is not an Apple iPhone or necessarily a Lenovo-branded handset.

What is distinctive about the ThinkPhone?
The ThinkPhone by Motorola is the clearest example of a phone that joins Lenovo’s business-computing identity with Motorola’s smartphone business. That makes it more relevant to readers looking for a work phone or continuity with a Lenovo PC than to someone simply seeking an “iPhone equivalent.”

Start with the phone’s brand, exact model and intended audience rather than the parent company name. A Motorola consumer phone, a ThinkPhone and a historical Legion handset target different needs.

What Lenovo’s current portfolio statements do—and do not—tell you
On 5 September 2025, Lenovo described Motorola smartphones as part of an AI-powered portfolio covering consumer, business and mobile devices, with products positioned at multiple price points. On 6 January 2026, Lenovo’s CES announcement described new Motorola premium smartphones and a Lenovo–Motorola Qira AI direction intended to connect experiences across devices.

These corporate announcements show how Lenovo positions Motorola within a wider device strategy; they are not a complete phone catalog, a country-by-country sales list or a substitute for the specifications and availability of an individual handset.
