Yes. The Nintendo Switch 2 edition of It Takes Two supports online cross-play with supported PlayStation, Xbox and PC versions. EA’s current Friend’s Pass help information names Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S and PC, while the Switch 2-specific guide names PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC. EA’s September 2026 announcement includes the older console generations as well. The important exception is the original Nintendo Switch edition: it does not play online with the Switch 2 edition unless the Switch 2 player uses the original-Switch version instead.
The direct answer: Switch 2 can play online with PlayStation, Xbox and PC
If one player owns the Nintendo Switch 2 edition and the other owns a supported PlayStation, Xbox or PC edition, you can play the story together online. EA describes the Switch 2 release as cross-platform, not merely cross-generation. That means a Switch 2 player is not limited to another Nintendo console.

The Switch 2-specific help guide lists PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC. EA’s September 2026 release announcement additionally names PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. Taken together, EA’s current launch documentation supports Switch 2 online play with the listed PlayStation, Xbox and PC editions. The exact platform list shown in a particular help article may depend on when that page was written.

Which edition each player needs
The edition matters more than the Nintendo hardware name. The Switch 2 edition is the version intended for cross-platform online play. The original Nintendo Switch edition follows the older compatibility rules.

Do not treat the original Switch cartridge or download as interchangeable with the Switch 2 edition for online matchmaking. If your friend is on the original Switch version, the practical solution is to run the same original-Switch edition on the Switch 2 console. That is a downgrade for the Switch 2 player, not cross-play between two different editions.
Switch 2 and the original Switch: online versus local play
Online play between generations
An original Switch player and a Switch 2 player cannot simply launch their respective editions and join the same online session. EA’s instructions say the Switch 2 player must downgrade to the original Switch edition for that pairing. Both players then use the original-Switch version.

Local GameShare
The two console generations can connect locally through GameShare. This is a different feature from internet cross-play: it is designed for nearby consoles and does not make the original Switch edition compatible with the Switch 2 edition over the internet. Choose GameShare when both players are together and want local play; choose the supported online setup when you are connecting remotely.
Other cross-generation combinations
EA’s earlier platform documentation also records cross-generation compatibility within the PlayStation family (PlayStation 4 with PlayStation 5) and within the Xbox family (Xbox One with Xbox Series X|S). That older page’s statement that Nintendo Switch has no cross-play describes the original Switch release and predates the Switch 2 announcement. It should not be used to override EA’s newer Switch 2 instructions.
How Friend’s Pass lets a second player join
Friend’s Pass is the most useful option when only one person owns the full game. The invited player downloads the free Friend’s Pass from the digital store on their platform, then accepts the owner’s invitation from inside the game. The pass is intended to let the second player participate in the owner’s co-op session without buying a second full copy.

- Confirm the editions first. For a Switch 2 cross-platform session, the Nintendo player should use the Switch 2 edition. For an original-Switch partner, the Switch 2 player must use the original-Switch edition instead.
- Install Friend’s Pass on the invited player’s platform. Use that platform’s digital store and download the free pass rather than purchasing a second full game unnecessarily.
- Have the full-game owner start the co-op session. The owner sends the invitation through the game’s online invite flow.
- Accept the invitation with Friend’s Pass. Once the invited player accepts, both players can play the campaign together under the pass rules.
- Check ownership before leaving the opening chapter. If neither player owns the full version, Friend’s Pass allows a trial of the first chapter. Continuing beyond that chapter requires at least one player to own the full game.
Friend’s Pass does not remove platform or subscription requirements. It supplies the access license for the invited player; it does not convert an original Switch edition into the Switch 2 edition or bypass a console’s online-service requirement.

EA says both players need the applicable online subscription for internet co-op. On Nintendo Switch, that means Nintendo Switch Online; on PlayStation, PlayStation Plus; and on Xbox, the relevant Xbox Game Pass online subscription. Make sure the subscription is active on both accounts before troubleshooting invitations. The published guidance does not state an equivalent paid-console subscription requirement for PC.
A subscription is separate from game ownership. A player using Friend’s Pass may avoid buying the full game, but still needs the applicable online service when playing online on a console.

When the Switch 2 edition became available
EA announced physical and digital Switch 2 software for October 15, 2026. EA gave October 16 as the release timing for Japan, Australia, New Zealand and South Korea. On the research date of October 13, 2026, that launch was still two days away, so availability and storefront listings should be checked for the relevant region after launch.
EA announced a standard price of $39.99 and said existing original-Switch owners could upgrade to the Switch 2 edition for free. The $39.99 figure is EA’s announced standard price, not a guarantee of the final local price, taxes, retailer discount or currency conversion. A physical edition was also announced. If your goal is cross-play with a PlayStation, Xbox or PC friend, verify that you are installing the Switch 2 edition rather than relying only on the console’s backward-compatible or upgraded copy.
A practical compatibility check before you invite a friend
- Identify the hardware: confirm whether the Nintendo player is using Switch 2 or the original Switch, and whether the other player is on PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S or PC.
- Identify the software edition: Switch 2 cross-play requires the Switch 2 edition; an original-Switch partner requires the original-Switch edition on both sides.
- Choose the connection type: use online co-op for remote players and GameShare for local play between nearby Nintendo consoles.
- Confirm Friend’s Pass status: the invited player can use the free pass, but one person must own the full game to continue beyond the first chapter.
- Confirm subscriptions: both console players need the applicable Nintendo Switch Online, PlayStation Plus or Xbox Game Pass service.
- Check regional launch timing: the Switch 2 release date differs by region, with October 16 listed for Japan, Australia, New Zealand and South Korea.
What to do if cross-play is not working
The players cannot find each other
Start by checking the edition on each console. The most common generation-specific mistake is pairing the Switch 2 edition with the original Switch edition online. If the second player is on an original Switch, the Switch 2 player must launch the original-Switch version. If the second player is on PS5, Xbox Series X|S or PC, use the Switch 2 edition.

The invitation is rejected or the session will not start
Verify that both players have the required console subscription and that the invited player installed Friend’s Pass from the correct platform store. If neither person owns the full game, stop at the first chapter unless one player purchases or already owns the complete version.
The game appears unavailable on Switch 2
Check the regional release schedule and the edition shown in the Nintendo storefront or on the physical packaging. EA announced October 15, 2026 for the general release and October 16 for Japan, Australia, New Zealand and South Korea. Store timing can also affect when a download or upgrade becomes visible.
An older help page says there is no cross-platform play
That wording refers to earlier versions, especially the original Nintendo Switch release, and predates EA’s Switch 2 launch announcement. Use the newer Switch 2-specific guidance for a Switch 2 matchup while retaining the original-Switch exception.

A Switch 2 player can play It Takes Two online with a friend on PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One or PC when the Switch 2 edition and the relevant supported platform edition are used. Two Switch 2 players can play online together. Two original-Switch players can also play online together. The only generation mismatch that needs special handling is original Switch with Switch 2: for online play, the Switch 2 player must switch to the original-Switch edition; for local play, use GameShare.
