No. Inscryption does not appear to need a continuous internet connection for its single-player gameplay on Steam. You should, however, sign in, install and launch the game once while connected, then configure and test Steam Offline Mode before travelling or disconnecting. That preparation handles Steam’s client authentication separately from the game’s own offline capability.
What the evidence says
Inscryption is listed on Steam as a single-player game. Steam’s listing also identifies Steam Cloud as one of its features. SteamDB’s app-specific metadata reports requires_internet_for_singleplayer 0 and requires_internet_for_setup 0. Those fields support the practical conclusion that the installed game itself is not intended to require a live connection during normal single-player play.

SteamDB is a third-party metadata service, so its fields are not the same as a direct developer guarantee. They are nevertheless more specific to Inscryption than a general statement about Steam. Valve’s Steamworks guidance says, “We strongly recommend all singleplayer content is accessible without an Internet connection.” That is a platform recommendation to developers, not proof by itself that every individual game works offline.

Inscryption is made by Daniel Mullins Games and published by Devolver Digital. Its official description presents it as a combination of deckbuilding roguelike, escape-room-style puzzles and psychological horror. Those are self-contained, single-player systems; the available information does not identify an online multiplayer mode or a recurring network service required to enter the game.

The important distinction: game access versus Steam access
There are two separate questions behind “Do I need internet?”

In other words, “offline-capable” does not mean “never connect Steam.” The safest workflow is to perform the one-time setup while online and then deliberately switch the client to Offline Mode.
How to prepare Inscryption for offline play
Do this on the computer you intend to use offline. Steam’s Offline Mode state is a client-and-account setup, so preparing a different computer does not necessarily prepare this one.
- Connect to the internet and sign in to Steam. Use the account that owns Inscryption. If Steam has recently asked for a password, mobile confirmation or another sign-in check, complete it before disconnecting.
- Install Inscryption completely. Open your Library, select Inscryption and wait for the download and any queued updates to finish. Starting the game before the installation is complete does not establish a reliable offline test.
- Launch the game once while connected. Reach the main menu and, if appropriate, create a test save. This confirms that Steam can start the installed files and gives the client a chance to complete first-run configuration.
- Close the game normally. Allow Steam to finish writing files instead of shutting down the computer while the game is still running.
- Switch Steam to Offline Mode. In the Steam desktop client, open the Steam menu and choose Go Offline. Follow the prompt to restart Steam in Offline Mode. The wording can vary slightly by client release, but the relevant command is Steam’s built-in “Go Offline” action.
- Test the game before leaving connectivity. With Steam showing that it is offline, open Inscryption from your Library and play long enough to load a save or begin a new run. This is a real test of the exact computer, account and installation you will use later.
- Exit Steam cleanly. Once the offline test succeeds, close Steam through its normal menu. You can then disconnect Wi-Fi or Ethernet and start the client again when needed.
SEGA’s Steam Offline Mode support guidance, updated March 20, 2025, makes the same practical point: “Offline Mode allows you to play games through Steam without reconnecting to the Steam Network every time you wish to play.” It also says you must first connect to Steam and test each game to configure Offline Mode on that machine. The advice applies to Steam’s client behavior; it is not a claim that SEGA made about Inscryption specifically.

What you can do without a connection
Continue the single-player campaign
Inscryption’s card battles, exploration, puzzles and narrative progression are local game activities. Once the game starts successfully in Offline Mode, there is no indication that it must contact a server between encounters, chapters or runs.
Load and create local saves
Your installed game can read and write its local save data while disconnected. The presence of Steam Cloud means Steam has an online synchronization feature for the game, but the reviewed information does not document exactly how Inscryption queues, merges or resolves offline changes. Treat the computer’s local files as the current copy until Steam reconnects and reports a successful synchronization.
Play repeatedly during travel
After the Offline Mode test, you should not need to reconnect before every session. You can suspend your computer, restart it or launch the game again while the Steam client remains able to operate offline, provided the installation and local account state have not changed.
What will not work normally offline
- Downloading or updating the game: A new installation, patch or corrupted-file replacement needs Steam’s network connection.
- Steam Cloud synchronization: Steam lists Cloud support for Inscryption, but synchronization cannot occur until the client can reach Steam. The available information does not promise how conflicts are handled after offline play.
- Store and community features: Browsing the store, community pages, discussions, screenshots and workshop-related services requires connectivity.
- Account verification on an unprepared machine: If Steam has never authenticated the account or configured Offline Mode on that computer, it may be unable to complete those steps without a connection.
- Online achievements or other service updates: You may be able to trigger local game events offline, but the sources do not establish when or whether each achievement is queued and uploaded. Do not treat an offline notification as proof that Steam has synchronized it.
Common situations and the right response
“I installed it, but I am already at the airport”
If Steam was never switched to Offline Mode and tested while you were connected, there is no dependable workaround based on the available evidence. Try launching Steam and Inscryption anyway, but be prepared for a sign-in or configuration request. For future trips, perform the seven-step preparation above before leaving.

“Steam says it cannot connect”
That message is not automatically evidence that Inscryption requires internet. First check whether Steam is in Offline Mode rather than repeatedly retrying an online login. If the client offers a choice to start offline, accept it and open the game from the Library. If no offline option appears, reconnect when possible, sign in, launch the game once, and use Steam > Go Offline deliberately.
“The game starts, but my latest save is missing”
Check which computer and Steam account you are using, then look for the most recent local save from the last successful session. Do not delete files or accept a Cloud conflict blindly. Because the available documentation confirms Steam Cloud is listed but does not describe Inscryption’s conflict rules, preserve the local save and reconnect only when you can review Steam’s synchronization prompt carefully.
“An update is waiting while I am offline”
You can continue using the installed version if Steam allows it to start. The update itself must wait until you reconnect. Avoid uninstalling the game to troubleshoot an offline problem: doing so can leave you with no installed copy to launch.

Repeat the online sign-in, installation, first launch and Offline Mode test on the new computer. Offline authorization is not something to assume will transfer merely because the same Steam account owns the game.

A reliable travel checklist
- Steam is signed in to the purchasing account.
- Inscryption is fully installed and has no pending download.
- The game has reached its main menu at least once while online.
- A recent save is present on the computer you will carry.
- Steam was switched to Offline Mode through the Steam menu.
- Inscryption launched and loaded a save during that offline test.
- You understand that Cloud, updates and store services will wait for reconnection.
Keep the computer powered with enough local storage for saves and avoid clearing Steam’s app data immediately before departure. Those are sensible precautions for any offline Steam game; they do not indicate an additional Inscryption requirement.
Why the answer can be “no” even though Steam is involved
Steam is both a storefront and a software client that manages licenses, installations and optional online services. A game can be designed as an entirely offline single-player experience while the client still needs an initial authenticated session. That is why a first launch, an Offline Mode test and a Cloud caveat belong in the answer.
For Inscryption, the strongest app-specific indicators are its Steam single-player listing and SteamDB’s zero values for internet requirements for single-player and setup. Valve’s general Steamworks recommendation points in the same direction, while Steam’s Offline Mode documentation explains the preparation step. Taken together, they support offline play after setup without claiming that every Steam account, computer or future client version will behave identically.

You have reliable internet now
Install Inscryption, launch it, switch Steam to Offline Mode and test it before disconnecting. After that, continuous connectivity should not be necessary for the single-player game.

Your connection is intermittent
Use the same preparation process during a stable connection. Once tested, play offline rather than allowing Steam to repeatedly attempt online reconnection.
You have never launched it and are already offline
There is a meaningful risk that Steam cannot complete authentication or Offline Mode setup. The game’s lack of a continuous connection requirement does not remove that first-use client caveat.
You need Cloud saves or account services
Reconnect before relying on synchronization, updates or other Steam features. The game can be offline-capable while those platform services remain unavailable.
