Yes. When you mute an iMessage conversation with Hide Alerts, Apple says the sender receives a note indicating that your notifications are silenced. The conversation is not blocked: new messages still arrive, but your iPhone stops normal alerts for that thread. Apple does not document a universal, separately worded “you were muted” alert, so the sender’s indication should not be described more specifically than Apple’s wording.
What happens when you mute an iMessage conversation?
On iPhone, muting a conversation means turning on Hide Alerts for that particular thread. It is a notification control, not a delivery control. Messages continue to reach your iPhone, remain in the conversation, and can be opened whenever you choose. The change affects how your device alerts you, not whether the other person can send a message.

- Notifications: alerts for that conversation are suppressed while Hide Alerts is on.
- Message delivery: incoming messages still arrive in Messages.
- Conversation access: the thread remains in your list and can be read or answered normally.
- Other threads: muting one conversation does not mute every conversation or disable Messages notifications app-wide.
Apple describes the setting in its current iPhone guide, and its support documentation says that Hide Alerts “will only stop notifications for that conversation, not your device.” Apple’s Messages guide also identifies the Hide Alerts icon that appears beside a muted conversation.
Can the other person tell that you muted them?
What Apple explicitly says
Apple Support states: “Senders receive a note indicating that you have notifications silenced.” That means a person messaging you may see an indication in Messages that your notifications are silenced. It is not the same as receiving a direct warning that you selected Hide Alerts for that particular person.

- Vibrant 6.1-inch Super Retina XDR display with OLED technology. Action mode for smooth, steady, handheld videos.
The documented statement does not specify the exact visible wording, where it appears, or whether every iOS version displays it in precisely the same way. Those details can vary with the operating-system release and the circumstances of the conversation. The reliable conclusion is narrower: Apple says the sender receives a silenced-notifications note.
What the sender does not learn from Hide Alerts
- They are not told that messages failed to deliver.
- They are not blocked from sending additional messages.
- They do not receive evidence that you opened or ignored a particular message solely because you muted the thread.
- They are not given a documented history of when you enabled or disabled Hide Alerts.
Read receipts, delivery indicators, and your replies remain governed by their own settings. Muting changes the alert behavior on your device; it does not rewrite the conversation for the sender.
Hide Alerts, Focus Status, and all Messages notifications are different
Several iPhone controls can make it seem as though someone is being “muted,” but they operate at different scopes. Use the table below to identify which behavior you are seeing.

| Setting or behavior | Scope | Do messages still arrive? | What another person may see | How to reverse it |

| Hide Alerts | One conversation | Yes | Apple says the sender receives a note indicating that your notifications are silenced. | Open the thread, tap the contact or conversation icon, and turn off Hide Alerts. |
| Focus Status sharing | A Focus or sleep-schedule pause, with sharing controllable per one-to-one conversation | Yes | Messages can show that your notifications are silenced by Focus; sharing can be disabled for that conversation. | Open the one-to-one conversation, tap the contact icon, and turn off Share Focus Status. |
| Allow Notifications off for Messages | The Messages app on the device | Yes | Apple’s cited guidance does not describe a per-sender mute note for this app-wide setting. | Use Settings to turn Messages notifications back on. |
Hide Alerts is the right explanation when only one thread is quiet. Focus Status is a separate status-sharing feature: a Focus mode or sleep schedule can pause notifications and optionally tell people in Messages. Turning off Messages notifications altogether is broader and affects every conversation.
How to mute one person or conversation on iPhone
You can enable Hide Alerts from the conversation list or from inside the thread. The labels below follow Apple’s current instructions; wording can differ slightly on older releases.

- This phone is unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice on GSM and CDMA networks (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US Cellular, Cricket, Metro, Tracfone, Mint Mobile, etc.).
- Please check with your carrier to verify compatibility.
- The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a generic (Mfi certified) charging cable.
- Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.
Method 1: From the Messages list
- Open the Messages app.
- Find the conversation you want to silence.
- Swipe left over that conversation.
- Tap Mute or Hide Alerts, depending on the label shown on your iPhone.
The thread stays in Messages, and incoming texts continue to arrive. A Hide Alerts icon appears next to the conversation so you can recognize that it is muted.
Method 2: From inside the conversation
- Open the conversation in Messages.
- Tap the person’s image, initials, or conversation icon at the top.
- Turn on Hide Alerts.
- Tap outside the details view to return to the thread.
This setting applies to that conversation, not automatically to every thread involving the same contact. If the person has separate one-to-one and group threads with you, check each conversation individually.

To restore alerts, open the muted thread and change the same control:
- Open Messages and select the conversation.
- Tap the contact image, initials, or icon at the top of the screen.
- Turn Hide Alerts off.
- Return to the conversation and send a test message if you want to confirm that alerts are back.
Apple says the Hide Alerts icon identifies a muted conversation. If the icon remains beside the thread, revisit its details and verify that the switch is off. You do not need to delete the conversation, block the contact, or change iMessage settings to unmute it.
Why Focus Status can look like a mute notification
Focus modes and sleep schedules can pause notifications across a defined period. When Focus Status sharing is enabled, Messages can show people that your notifications are silenced. This signal is about the active Focus state, not necessarily a decision to mute their individual conversation.

For a one-to-one conversation, Apple provides a per-conversation control:
Recommended Free Tools
- Open the relevant conversation in Messages.
- Tap the contact icon at the top.
- Turn off Share Focus Status.
Disabling sharing prevents that conversation from receiving the Focus-status indication, but it does not turn off the Focus mode itself and does not restore alerts if Hide Alerts is separately enabled. Check both controls when a contact reports seeing a silenced-notifications status.
Group chats have an important exception
Muting a group suppresses ordinary notifications for that group, but Apple notes that a mention can still notify a participant even when the conversation is muted, depending on that person’s settings. A message containing your name or another supported mention may therefore produce an alert while the rest of the group remains quiet.
This behavior is why “muted” should not be interpreted as “no possible notification.” Hide Alerts reduces normal thread alerts; it does not guarantee that every special notification category is suppressed. If a muted group still produces alerts, check whether you were mentioned and review your mention-notification preferences.
When no notification appears, the cause may be something else
A missing alert is not proof that a sender muted you, that you muted them, or that a message failed. Apple lists several independent notification behaviors that can explain the same symptom.

The Messages app is open
Apple says that when Messages is active, the app does not show a notification for every new message. If you are already viewing the conversation, the lack of a banner or sound can be normal.
An Apple Watch receives the alert
Depending on whether the iPhone is unlocked and how notifications are configured, an alert may go to the Apple Watch or the iPhone rather than both. Check the device you were wearing or carrying before changing conversation settings.
A Focus mode is active
A scheduled Focus or sleep mode can silence multiple apps or contacts at once. Look for the Focus indicator and check Share Focus Status if another person reports seeing a silenced status.
Messages notifications are disabled globally
If Allow Notifications is off for Messages in Settings, every conversation can be quiet even though messages continue to arrive. That is a device-wide app setting, not the same as Hide Alerts on one thread.
The thread itself has Hide Alerts enabled
Open the conversation details and look for the Hide Alerts switch and icon. This is the most direct check when only one conversation is silent.

Hide Alerts is useful when you want to read messages on your own schedule without interrupting work, sleep, driving, or another activity. Because delivery continues, it is less drastic than blocking. The sender can continue to send messages, and you can respond whenever convenient.

It is also not a guaranteed invisible action. Apple’s documentation says the sender receives a note indicating that your notifications are silenced. That note does not establish that the sender can see a private timeline of your notification choices, and Apple does not promise one identical presentation on every version. If you need the sender not to receive a Focus-related status, manage Share Focus Status separately.
For a temporary quiet period, consider whether Focus is the better tool: it can cover several apps and schedules, while Hide Alerts targets one conversation. For a single noisy thread, Hide Alerts is more precise. For a complete break from Messages alerts, the app-wide notification setting is broader but affects everyone who contacts you.
A practical decision guide
You want one conversation quiet but still want messages
Use Hide Alerts on that conversation. Verify the icon appears beside the thread and remember that a sender may receive Apple’s silenced-notifications note.
You want several apps quiet during work or sleep
Use a Focus or sleep schedule. Decide whether to share Focus Status; sharing can be turned off in an individual one-to-one conversation.
You want no Messages banners or sounds anywhere
Turn off Messages notifications at the app level in Settings. Messages will still be delivered, but every conversation is affected until you re-enable notifications.
You need to stop a person from contacting you
Mute is not the appropriate control because it does not prevent delivery. Use the iPhone’s separate blocking controls if your goal is to stop communication rather than silence alerts; blocking is a different action with different consequences.
Checklist when a muted thread is still making noise
- Confirm the Hide Alerts icon is beside the intended conversation, not a different thread with the same contact.
- Open the thread’s details and verify Hide Alerts is still enabled.
- Check whether the alert was caused by a group mention.
- Check Focus settings and whether the visible status came from Share Focus Status rather than Hide Alerts.
- Look at your Apple Watch if you use one; the alert may have been routed there.
- If every conversation is quiet, inspect Messages’ Allow Notifications setting instead of changing one thread.
- If the conversation was recently split or recreated as a new thread, apply Hide Alerts to the new thread as well.

Group-mention behavior is described in Apple’s group conversation guide.
