Does Home Assistant Work Without an Internet Connection?

Home Assistant can run locally through an internet outage, but cloud-dependent devices and remote access may not. Here’s how to check what will keep working.

Yes. Home Assistant runs on hardware in your home, so locally connected devices and automations can keep working when your internet connection fails. The important distinction is how each device connects: a device that depends on its manufacturer’s cloud may stop responding, even while Home Assistant itself remains available on your home network.

What works during an internet outage?

Home Assistant’s controller operates locally; Home Assistant Cloud is not required to keep the local system running. Home Assistant’s FAQ says that choosing devices that work locally is the most reliable way to keep a smart home running through an internet outage. Its glossary describes Home Assistant as cloud-independent: it does not need an internet connection or a vendor cloud account to keep a smart home running.

If Home Assistant can communicate with a device over your home network or a local radio connection, that device may remain controllable and its Home Assistant automations may continue to run. That is conditional, not a guarantee that every device or feature will behave unchanged. An internet outage is also different from a power failure, a failed Home Assistant host, or a failure of the home network; the cited guidance does not promise operation through those separate failures.

Which devices work locally?

Home Assistant identifies Zigbee, Z-Wave, Matter, Thread, and ESPHome as local technologies that do not need internet access. But a protocol name or brand alone does not establish that every product feature works offline: the particular device and its Home Assistant integration determine whether communication is local or cloud-dependent. Check the integration documentation and the exact model before relying on it during an outage.

Home Assistant | Smart Home hub with Advanced Automation | Official HomeAssistant ((4G+64G)+Hub)
  • Home Assistant provides a professional and reliable platform for home automation, designed to run continuously 24/7.
  • Powered by a 64-bit Quad-Core Cortex-A53 processor, delivering smooth and efficient performance for smart home automations.
  • Includes 4GB SDRAM for reliable multitasking and 64GB eMMC
  • Features a Mali-450 MP2 GPU for responsive visual interfaces, housed in a compact 85 × 85 × 15mm (3.35" × 3.35" × 0.59") design that fits easily in any space.
  • Typical power consumption is under 10W, with fanless operation for quiet performance suitable for any room in your home.
  • Local connection: Home Assistant communicates with the device directly over your network or a compatible local radio. Control and automations using that local connection can remain available without the ISP connection.
  • Manufacturer-cloud connection: The integration reaches the device through the vendor’s online service. That route is unavailable if the internet connection fails, so the device may not respond through Home Assistant.

Home Assistant’s integration documentation is the place to check connection details. Its Works with Home Assistant program highlights devices tested for local control; verify the specific model and integration rather than assuming all products from a manufacturer behave alike.

Can you open Home Assistant at home without internet?

Usually, if the home network is still working and your phone or computer can reach the Home Assistant instance over that network. Home Assistant listens on the local network by default, so loss of the ISP connection does not by itself remove the local path. If the router, Wi-Fi, or local network is also down, local access may fail for that separate reason.

Can you control Home Assistant remotely during an outage?

Generally, no. Remote access from work or while traveling needs a working connection to the Home Assistant instance at home. If the home internet connection is down, a remote-access method cannot reach it through that connection.

When the home connection is available, Home Assistant documents several remote-access approaches:

Home Assistant Cloud is not needed for local operation; its relevance here is remote access and cloud-connected features. See the official Home Assistant Cloud information and remote access documentation for details.

Which features need internet?

Local control is separate from services that depend on an outside connection. Home Assistant lists cloud remote access, Apple Home, Google Home, and Amazon Alexa integrations, updates, and app-store access among features that need internet. During an outage, those cloud-linked features or downloads may be unavailable even if locally connected devices continue to work.

Can voice control stay local?

Yes. Home Assistant Assist can use local speech-to-text and text-to-speech components, but the fully local setup has prerequisites: listening hardware, integrated speech services, and Home Assistant Operating System. Home Assistant also offers a cloud voice-processing option; in that pipeline, audio is sent to Nabu Casa servers for processing. Choose the pipeline that fits your privacy and setup preferences, and consult the official guides for fully local voice setup and Home Assistant Cloud voice setup.

What hardware do you need for offline operation?

You need an always-on device to host Home Assistant, but there is no single required product. Home Assistant Green is a ready-to-use host with Home Assistant preinstalled; a Raspberry Pi, mini PC, NUC, or virtual machine may also suit a setup. Green is the recommended plug-and-play option for many users, not a requirement. Review the official installation options and FAQ when choosing a host.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Radio hardware is also conditional. Home Assistant Connect ZBT-2 is an optional accessory for Zigbee, Thread, and Matter; you need compatible radio hardware only if your chosen devices and setup require it. It is not necessary for every Home Assistant installation.

How to check whether your setup will survive an outage

  1. Identify how each device connects. Read the specific Home Assistant integration documentation and confirm whether it communicates locally or requires the manufacturer’s cloud.
  2. Check the features you rely on. A device may offer local control for some functions but rely on a cloud service for others. Verify the exact model and desired functions.
  3. Separate local and remote needs. Test access from a device on your home network separately from access while away; remote access depends on a connection to your home instance.
  4. Review dependencies beyond the ISP link. The host needs power, and local control needs the home network or relevant radio and devices to be operating. Those are separate from internet availability.
