Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →There is not enough published evidence to show that HelixSR runs faster than FSR 4 on Steam Deck. The early speed claim lacks comparable frame-rate figures and test settings. HelixSR is an unofficial project that routes a game’s FSR 3.1 interface to NVIDIA DLSS Model E reconstruction on AMD hardware; it is not native DLSS support. Its documented development testing was on BC-250 hardware, not Steam Deck.
What HelixSR does
HelixSR replaces a game’s AMD FidelityFX upscaler DLL and uses the FSR 3.1-facing interface to feed game-provided colour, depth, motion vectors, jitter and exposure into a custom Direct3D 12 compute implementation of DLSS Model E. That is a reconstruction technique accessed through an existing game integration—not native NVIDIA DLSS support, and not a universal way to add DLSS to any game.

The project’s README describes Linux use through Proton and vkd3d-proton. The early coverage says a compatible game must use DirectX 12 and already include FSR 3.1. Valve’s FAQ says games with FSR integration work on Steam Deck, but that general statement does not establish that HelixSR itself works reliably on the Deck. That has not been demonstrated by a matched benchmark in the available reporting. The initial claim, as summarized by AlexTech.ai, did not include comparative FPS figures or detailed test configuration. Without those details, readers cannot tell whether the comparison used the same game, scene, handheld, power limit, render resolution, quality preset, driver and runtime—or whether any apparent difference came from the upscaler.
#1 Best Overall
- 1TB NVMe SSD
- 1280 x 800 HDR OLED display with premium anti-glare etched glass, 7.4" Diagonal display size up to 90Hz refresh rate
- Wi-Fi 6E
- 50Whr battery; 3-12 hours of gameplay (content-dependent)
- Carrying case with removable liner
HelixSR’s own performance notes do not fill that gap. Version 1.4.1 reports that a rewrite of the final downscale pass reduced QSSM Light processing time at 1080p Quality from 2.19 ms to 1.80 ms on BC-250 hardware. Those are project-reported HelixSR timings, not an FSR 4 comparison and not a Steam Deck result. HelixSR repository and version 1.4.1 notes.
Community comments offer mixed impressions on RDNA 2. One user reported that results seemed worse than FSR 4 at similar performance, but an individual report is anecdotal and cannot settle the comparison. Community discussion on r/radeon.

What devices and games are documented?
The project identifies version 1.4.1 as targeting AMD RDNA 1 and newer GPUs, while stating that Radeon Vega and Radeon VII are not supported yet. Its stated development and testing used AMD BC-250 hardware under Linux with Mesa RADV in an FSR 3.1 game. The project says other GPUs, drivers and games are untested. Community testing on a ROG Ally X helped with RDNA 3 wave64 shaders, but that is not broad validation across AMD handhelds.

Those qualifications matter for Steam Deck owners: the Deck is not the project’s documented test device in the cited materials. Compatibility should be treated as uncertain for a particular game and software setup, rather than inferred from Valve’s general statement about FSR-enabled games.

How to compare HelixSR with FSR 4 fairly
A useful comparison needs to hold the conditions constant. Test the same scene on the same handheld, with the same power limit, render resolution, quality preset, driver and runtime. Record both frame rate and GPU frame time; also check image stability, power draw and whether the game remains compatible. A single FPS number can miss changes in visual quality, battery impact or frame pacing.
A separate Steam Deck HQ hands-on report illustrates why the trade-offs matter: its FSR 4 mod improved image detail in several tested games but could require more power and reduce performance. For Spider-Man Remastered, that report gave roughly 90 FPS with FSR 3 Ultra Performance and roughly 70 FPS with FSR 4 Ultra Performance on its setup. These figures describe that report’s FSR comparison only; they do not include HelixSR and should not be treated as a HelixSR-versus-FSR 4 result. Steam Deck HQ’s FSR 4 hands-on report.

- Valve is entering the gaming console marketplace with the new Steam Deck, a console geared towards PC gamers. The Steam Deck can be docked to a monitor, and used as a PC, or docked to a TV.
- Players can play a huge variety of games at any time with the comfort of a console and the freedom of a PC. Not anti-glare screen.
- Like the name suggests, the Steam Deck will include upgraded 1TB storage, and will include a carrying case. A micro SD slot will also enable expanded storage.
- Valve partnered with AMD to create a specialized APU optimized for handheld gaming, and Valve says the chip will deliver performance to run AAA gaming titles.
- The Steam Deck is outfitted with a 7-inch touchscreen, and two trackpads under the control sticks that allow gamers to operate games never designed outside of mouse and keyboard capabilities.
What the speed claim means for users
HelixSR is an interesting compatibility-layer experiment: it attempts to use DLSS Model E reconstruction through games’ existing FSR 3.1 interface on AMD GPUs. But the available figures and testing do not establish that it is faster than FSR 4 on Steam Deck, nor do they establish broad compatibility across AMD handhelds. Treat the headline comparison as an unverified claim until a controlled, reproducible test publishes the device, game, settings, frame times, frame rates and power measurements.
