Yes—Gemini Live can continue while you use other Android apps. Start the conversation with the phone unlocked, then swipe up from the bottom edge to put Gemini Live in the background. Returning to the conversation is done from the “Live with Gemini” notification card.
A locked or screen-off phone is conditional. You cannot start Gemini Live while the phone is locked. An already active conversation can continue after locking only when Gemini on lock screen is enabled. If that setting is off, locking the phone places Live on hold until you unlock it.

Google’s guidance applies to Android phones and tablets using the Gemini mobile app or Gemini as the mobile assistant. Gemini Live is not available in the Gemini web app or in Google Messages. Google also releases changes gradually, so a feature described in the help documentation may not have reached every account or device yet.
How to enable background controls
The notification is the control surface that keeps an active Live conversation accessible when another app is in front of it. Android’s wording can differ slightly by device or software version, but Google gives this path:

- Open Settings on your Android phone or tablet.
- Tap Notifications.
- Open App notifications.
- Select Google.
- Turn on Live with Gemini notifications.
If you do not see the exact labels, look for Google’s notification settings and the category referring to Live with Gemini. The names can vary by Android version or manufacturer interface; the purpose is to permit the notification that represents the current Live session.
Enable this before testing background use. A conversation that is already running can remain active while you switch apps, but without the notification you may not have the documented card or lock-screen entry point for returning to it.
Use Gemini Live while another app is open
Once Live is running, you do not have to keep Gemini’s full-screen view visible. Follow this sequence:

- Swipe up from the bottom edge of the screen to leave Gemini and place the session in the background. On gesture-navigation devices, this is the normal home gesture; use your device’s equivalent if navigation controls are configured differently.
- Open or continue using the app you need. The Live session remains represented by its notification.
- When you want the full conversation view again, swipe down from the top edge of the screen to open notifications.
- Tap the Live with Gemini card.
This is different from merely asking Gemini a one-off question while another app is open. Google’s general Android assistant guidance says Gemini can listen when activated by voice or touch over another app. That describes assistant activation; the procedure above is for an already running, real-time Gemini Live conversation.

Continue after turning the screen off
“Screen off” usually means the device has been locked, so the lock-screen rule matters. Gemini Live cannot be started from a locked display. Start it first while the phone is unlocked, then decide whether an active session should remain available after you lock the device.
When Gemini on lock screen is enabled
An active Live conversation can continue when you lock the phone. The lock screen exposes a Live with Gemini notification, which provides the way back to the conversation without reopening the app from the launcher.
When Gemini on lock screen is disabled
Locking the phone places the Live conversation on hold. Unlock the phone to resume it. This is not the same as ending the session: the documented recovery action is to unlock and continue, provided the conversation has not ended.
Starting from a locked phone
There is no supported start-from-lock workflow. If the phone is already locked, unlock it before launching Gemini Live. Voice activation or another lock-screen assistant action does not change this specific requirement for starting Live.

Return to or end Live from the lock screen
With an active session and the relevant lock-screen access enabled, use the lock-screen notification:
- Wake the phone so the lock screen is visible.
- Tap the Live with Gemini notification.
- Unlock the phone when prompted to return to the conversation.
To stop Live from the lock screen, expand the same notification and tap End Live mode. Ending it is different from putting the session on hold: an ended session requires a new start, while a held session is addressed by unlocking and returning.
Google says that if a session is put on hold or ends while the phone is locked, you must unlock the phone to continue. Its help documentation does not specify a fixed amount of time that a background or locked session remains active, so there is no reliable duration to promise.

Notification permission or category is off
The documented background workflow depends on Live with Gemini notifications. Recheck Settings → Notifications → App notifications → Google → Live with Gemini. If your device uses different labels, find the Google notification category for Live and enable it.

The phone was locked before Live started
Unlock the device and begin the conversation again. Gemini Live does not support starting from a locked screen.
Lock-screen continuation is disabled
If Live pauses immediately after you lock the phone, check the Gemini setting that allows Gemini on the lock screen. Without that permission, the expected behavior is a hold, followed by continuation after you unlock.
The “Live with Gemini” card is not visible
Open the notification shade by swiping down from the top edge and look for the card while the session is active. If the card is absent, verify the Live notification category and make sure you are using the Android Gemini app or mobile assistant rather than the web app or Google Messages, where Gemini Live is not available.

The feature has not reached the account yet
Google notes that updates roll out gradually. Two Android devices, or two accounts on the same device, may therefore show different availability while the rollout is in progress. The official guidance does not identify a particular phone model or accessory as required for background use.

- Background use is not lock-screen use. Switching to another app is supported once Live is active; locking the phone adds the separate Gemini on lock screen requirement.
- Starting and continuing are separate actions. You must unlock the device to start Live, even if an existing conversation can later continue while locked.
- Paused is not ended. A lock with lock-screen access disabled places Live on hold. An ended session cannot be resumed through the notification as though it were merely paused.
- Assistant activation is not the same as Live. Gemini may be callable over another app by voice or touch, but that general assistant behavior should not be treated as proof that a Live session is running in the background.
- No fixed background timer is documented. Do not assume that a session will remain active for a particular number of minutes while the phone is locked or another app is open.
A practical setup checklist
Before relying on Gemini Live while moving between apps or putting the phone away, check these conditions:
- The device is an Android phone or tablet with Gemini available through the mobile app or mobile assistant.
- You start the Live conversation while the phone is unlocked.
- Live with Gemini notifications are enabled under Google’s app-notification settings.
- You know the bottom-edge swipe used to leave the full-screen view and the top-edge swipe used to open notifications.
- If you need the session to continue after locking, Gemini on lock screen is enabled.
If all five conditions are met, the documented workflow is straightforward: start Live, swipe up to use another app, and tap the Live with Gemini card when you want to return. For a locked phone, start unlocked and rely on the lock-screen setting rather than assuming every screen-off state behaves identically.
Availability limits
These instructions describe Google’s Android experience. They do not establish equivalent behavior in a desktop browser, the Gemini web app, or Google Messages; Google specifically says Gemini Live is unavailable in those locations. Device menus can also change with Android versions and manufacturer software, and Google’s staged rollouts mean that availability may arrive at different times for different users.
