Can an Xbox player play with someone on Steam?
Yes. Xbox Series X|S, Microsoft Store PC, and Steam are the confirmed platforms for the cross-platform multiplayer setup. The important qualification is the Steam account requirement for invitations.
- Confirm both versions. Make sure the Xbox player is on Xbox Series X|S and the PC player is using either the Microsoft Store PC version or the Steam version. The official listings do not establish support for other consoles.
- Check whether the invitation is cross-platform. If the squad invitation crosses from Xbox or Microsoft Store PC to Steam, the official FAQ says the sender must link an Xbox/Microsoft account on Steam.
- Link an Xbox account on the Steam installation when needed. Steam’s store description calls account linking optional for basic Steam play, but the FAQ makes it a requirement for sending a cross-platform squad invite. The account-link prompt and exact screen wording can change with updates, so follow the linking flow presented by the game.
- Send the squad invitation after linking. Once the required account connection is in place, use the game’s normal squad or friend-invitation controls. The account link is specifically tied to sending a cross-platform invite, not to the general ability to launch the Steam version.
- Check the platform and account if the invite fails. A failed invitation can result from an unlinked Xbox account, an unlisted platform, or a mismatch between the version being used and the supported Xbox and PC platforms.
An Xbox or Microsoft account is not required merely to play E-Day on Steam. It becomes necessary on Steam for the cross-platform squad-invite function described in the official FAQ, published August 4, 2026.
What cross-progression means in E-Day
Cross-progression means that account-linked progress can appear when you move between supported versions. It is separate from cross-play: you can join a friend’s multiplayer session across platforms without every save or entitlement transferring between storefronts.

Xbox Series X|S and Microsoft Store PC
The clearest shared-progression guarantee is Xbox Play Anywhere. The official Xbox product page states that Play Anywhere lets you play across Xbox Series X|S and PC with shared progression. For someone who alternates between an Xbox Series X|S console and the Microsoft Store PC version, this is the supported route for carrying progress between those two versions.
Use the same Xbox account on both devices so the Play Anywhere relationship can identify your progress. The shared-progression statement applies to the Xbox Series X|S and Microsoft Store PC pairing; it should not be stretched into a promise that every other storefront uses the same save system.
Steam and roaming saves
Steam uses different wording. Its listing says that optional account linking lets players carry progress with roaming saves, connect with friends, and send cross-platform invites. That establishes a way for linked progress to roam with the Steam account setup, but it does not spell out that every campaign, profile, or save type transfers identically among Steam, Microsoft Store PC, and Xbox.

Therefore, treat Steam cross-progression as account-linked roaming saves rather than as an unconditional cross-store guarantee. If you intend to move from Steam to another version, link the relevant account before relying on the transfer and verify that the progress appears on the destination platform. Keep expectations narrower than the Xbox Play Anywhere promise unless the game’s current documentation gives more detail.

Linking an account for invitations and linking an account for roaming saves are related but should not be treated as proof that every ownership or save rule is the same. Read the prompt shown by the game and make sure you are signing in with the account whose progress you intend to use.

Game Pass availability
The official Xbox page says that Gears of War: E-Day is included in Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass at launch. That gives Xbox and PC players a subscription route instead of buying the game outright, subject to the plan, region, and availability in effect when they play.
Game Pass inclusion does not change the definitions above. Subscription access, cross-play permissions, cross-progression, and cross-buy are separate questions. A player using PC Game Pass should still confirm that the installed PC version is the Microsoft Store edition covered by Xbox Play Anywhere’s shared-progression statement.
Troubleshooting common problems
You can play on Steam but cannot invite an Xbox friend
- Verify that the friend is on Xbox Series X|S or another confirmed PC platform.
- Link an Xbox/Microsoft account to the Steam installation. The official FAQ specifically requires this link to send a cross-platform squad invite.
- Close and relaunch the game after completing the account link if the invitation controls do not update immediately.
- Check that you are using the game’s cross-platform squad invitation function rather than a platform-specific friend action.
Your Xbox progress is missing on Microsoft Store PC
- Confirm that the PC installation is the Microsoft Store version, because the documented Play Anywhere shared-progression statement covers Xbox Series X|S and Microsoft Store PC.
- Sign in with the same Xbox account used on the console.
- Check that the account has access to the game through the applicable purchase or Game Pass entitlement.
- If the progress still does not appear, avoid starting a new save over the missing profile until the account and entitlement details are resolved.
Steam does not show the progress you expected
- Review whether optional account linking was completed on Steam.
- Use the same linked identity associated with the roaming saves you want to retrieve.
- Remember that Steam’s wording establishes roaming saves, not an unconditional promise that every save category transfers across every storefront.
- Check the game’s current account status before unlinking anything, because changing linked accounts can affect which progress is visible.
A friend is on a platform not listed in the product information
The confirmed platform list is Xbox Series X|S, Microsoft Store PC, and Steam. The available official statements do not document PlayStation or other platforms for E-Day. Treat an unlisted platform as unsupported until an updated official announcement says otherwise.

Which version makes sense for your setup?
You switch between Xbox and a Windows PC
The Xbox Series X|S and Microsoft Store PC pairing is the least ambiguous choice for shared progression because Xbox Play Anywhere explicitly covers it. Keep both devices on the same Xbox account and verify the entitlement before switching.
Your friends use Steam
You can still play together from Xbox or Microsoft Store PC. If you are using Steam and need to send the cross-platform squad invitation, link an Xbox account first. If you only want to play Steam locally or with Steam-specific contacts, the official FAQ says the Xbox/Microsoft account is not required for basic play.
You want Steam saves to follow you
Enable the optional account-linking feature described in the Steam listing and regard the result as roaming-save support. Do not assume that the Steam purchase itself grants Xbox or Microsoft Store ownership, or that every save type transfers identically between those storefronts.
