There is no responsible yes-or-no answer until you identify the exact game, edition, and platform. “[Game]” is a placeholder, so its player count, co-op type, split-screen support, online services, and crossplay cannot be confirmed. Check the game’s official product page and current support documentation rather than inferring features from its genre or from another title.
Use the guide below to separate local multiplayer, online multiplayer, cooperative play, competitive play, split-screen, and cross-platform support. Those labels describe different capabilities, and a store listing that says “multiplayer” may not answer the question you actually have: whether you can play with a particular friend, on a particular device, in a particular mode.

Why the game name and platform matter
Multiplayer support belongs to a specific release, not just to a franchise or a game’s general reputation. The Windows, PlayStation, Xbox, Switch, and cloud versions may have different features. A remaster can change player limits, while a PC release sold through one storefront may connect differently from the same game sold through another.

Before checking any feature, record:
- The exact title, including whether it is an expansion, remake, remaster, demo, or subscription edition.
- The platform and, for PC, the storefront or launcher.
- The edition or generation of the console.
- The date of the information you found, because online services and compatibility rules can change.
Without those details, a player count or a claim such as “it supports co-op” would be an unverified generalization. No player limit can be established for the unidentified title in this article.

What the multiplayer labels actually mean
Local multiplayer
Local multiplayer means players are in the same physical location and use the same game installation or console session. The game may show a shared view, divide the display into split-screen areas, or take turns on one screen. An extra controller may be required for each additional player, but the exact input requirement is title-specific.
Epic Games’ developer guidance describes local multiplayer as players in the same physical location. Its definitions are written for developers, but they are useful when interpreting store terminology: Epic Games Store Cross-Platform Multiplayer Guidelines.
Online multiplayer
Online multiplayer connects players in different locations through the internet and a shared live game session. It may require an account, a platform subscription, a stable connection, or a separate copy for every participant. Some games use matchmaking; others require one player to host and invite friends.
Co-op
Co-op, short for cooperative play, means players work toward a shared objective. It can be local or online, and it can use a shared screen, split-screen, or separate displays. “Co-op” does not by itself tell you how many people can join or whether crossplay is available.

Competitive multiplayer
Competitive multiplayer puts players or teams against one another. A game can support competitive multiplayer without offering co-op, or it can provide both. Look for separate labels such as versus, team deathmatch, ranked, arena, or player-versus-player rather than treating every multiplayer mode as cooperative.
Split-screen and shared-screen play
Split-screen gives each player a section of the display. Shared-screen play keeps everyone in one camera view. A listing may mention “local co-op” without specifying which presentation it uses, so check screenshots, the manual, or the official support page if that distinction affects your setup.
Crossplay and cross-platform co-op
Crossplay allows players on different platforms or platform families to join the same game session. It is not automatic. A title may support PlayStation-to-PlayStation play but not PlayStation-to-PC play, or it may connect two console generations while excluding a PC storefront.
The Microsoft Store treats local multiplayer, co-op, and cross-platform co-op as separate capabilities in its catalog filters. That separation is a useful reminder that one checkmark cannot answer all three questions: Microsoft Store local co-op and cross-platform co-op listing.

How to verify a game’s support step by step
- Open the official listing for the exact platform. Confirm the title and edition first. Do not rely on a search result that combines several versions.
- Read the feature labels individually. Record whether the page says local multiplayer, local co-op, online multiplayer, online co-op, competitive multiplayer, split-screen, or cross-platform play. Treat an absent label as unconfirmed rather than as proof that the mode is unavailable.
- Find the player limits for each mode. A game might allow four local players but only two online players. Write the limit beside the mode it describes; never turn one maximum into a general player count.
- Check the support or FAQ page. Look for a platform matrix covering console generations, PC storefronts, and crossplay restrictions. Confirm whether a host must own the game, whether guests need their own copy, and whether progression carries between platforms.
- Check account and subscription requirements. The listing should identify required accounts, platform online subscriptions, age restrictions, voice-chat permissions, and any launcher or service dependency.
- Confirm input and display requirements for local play. Verify the number and type of controllers, whether keyboard-and-mouse input is supported for every participant, and whether the mode is shared-screen or split-screen.
- Date volatile information. Online features can be patched, disabled, or changed. Prefer a current official support article and note its publication or update date when making plans with friends.
Why crossplay must be checked as a platform matrix
“Available on PC and console” only means the game is sold on those platforms. It does not establish that players can join one another. Compatibility can differ by console generation, operating system, storefront, region, or account system.
An official support example shows why a matrix is necessary. The Wasteland 3 crossplay and co-op support article, published September 19, 2026, describes compatibility within certain platform families and different connection requirements for PC storefronts. It also specifies two-player online-only co-op and no local or split-screen co-op. Those facts apply to Wasteland 3 only; they are an example of the detail you must find for the actual game, not an answer for “[Game].”
When reading a compatibility chart, ask four separate questions:

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- Can the same console family connect across generations?

Remote Play Together is not native online multiplayer
Steam Remote Play Together can let friends join a supported local multiplayer game over the internet. Steam describes a host who owns and runs the game, streams the session, and invites participants who use their own controllers: Steam Remote Play.

- VERSATILE CONNECTIVITY — Connect via USB-C for plug-and-play on console and PC, or quickly pair and switch between supported devices with XBOX Wireless and Bluetooth support.
- BUILT-IN AUDIO SUPPORT — Plug in compatible headsets using the 3.5mm audio jack for direct voice chat and immersive in-game sound.
This can be useful when a title has local co-op but no built-in online mode. However, it does not add native matchmaking, crossplay, dedicated servers, or a larger player limit. It is a Steam platform feature, applies only to supported games, and does not establish anything about the game’s PlayStation, Xbox, Switch, or other PC versions.
Expect the host’s connection and hardware to affect responsiveness and image quality. Each participant should confirm that their controller is recognized by Steam and that the game’s local mode supports the intended number of players.

Mistake: treating “multiplayer” as “online co-op”
Fix: Find the exact mode label. “Multiplayer” may refer only to local versus play, a separate competitive playlist, or a mode with a different player limit.

Mistake: assuming several platforms means crossplay
Fix: Locate the official platform-pairing list. If it names only certain combinations, do not infer support for the rest.

Mistake: confusing local co-op with split-screen
Fix: Verify whether the game uses split-screen, a shared camera, turn-taking, or multiple linked devices. “Local” describes player location, not the display layout.
Mistake: counting Remote Play as an online mode
Fix: Treat Remote Play as streamed access to a local session. The underlying game still needs a supported local mode and keeps its original local player limit.
Mistake: using an old guide for a current session
Fix: Check the developer’s current support page and the platform listing. Server shutdowns, patches, and account-policy changes can make old instructions inaccurate.

Once the exact game and platform are known, troubleshoot in this order:
- Compare versions, editions, and installed updates.
- Confirm that every player is using a platform combination listed as compatible.
- Check whether the mode is online co-op rather than local-only co-op.
- Verify required accounts, privacy settings, age permissions, and online subscriptions.
- Check whether one player must host and whether the host owns the game.
- Confirm that the session has not reached its mode-specific player limit.
- For local play, test each controller separately and select the game’s join option from the correct profile.
- For Remote Play, have the owner launch the game through Steam, invite participants from the Remote Play overlay, and verify each participant’s controller assignment.
If the official support page does not state a requirement or compatibility pairing, describe it as unconfirmed rather than promising that a workaround will work.
A practical checklist for answering “Can I play with friends?”
- Exact game title and edition identified.
- Every player’s platform and PC storefront recorded.
- Local, online, co-op, and competitive labels checked separately.
- Split-screen or shared-screen behavior confirmed if local play matters.
- Maximum players recorded for each relevant mode.
- Crossplay platform pairs verified from an official source.
- Accounts, subscriptions, controllers, host rules, and copy requirements checked.
- Information date confirmed for online services and compatibility.
Until those checks are complete, the accurate answer for the placeholder “[Game]” is simply that multiplayer or co-op support has not been established. Provide the exact game name, edition, and platform to turn this checklist into a title-specific answer.
