Live Translate for calls and Interpreter for face-to-face conversations use on-device AI. Interpreter can continue without cellular data or Wi‑Fi once its required language packs are downloaded.
That answer applies to the translation features, not every Galaxy AI tool. Samsung describes Galaxy AI as a hybrid system: translation is on-device, while features such as auto-formatting, auto-summarizing, auto-correction and some image-editing functions may use remote servers.

The short answer: translated speech is handled on the Galaxy device
Samsung’s support documentation states, “Live Translate, however, makes use of on-device AI only.” Samsung Business Insights similarly says Live Translate and Interpreter are “processed completely within an on-device AI engine.” In practical terms, the speech or text needed to translate a supported call or in-person conversation is analyzed by the phone rather than uploaded to Samsung’s cloud for translation.
Live Translate handles two-way translation during supported phone calls. Interpreter is designed for people speaking face to face: it presents a split-screen transcript and can speak the translated result aloud. Samsung Mobile Press says no third-party app is required and that on-device AI keeps these conversations private.

How Live Translate processes a phone call
What the feature does
Live Translate provides two-way, real-time voice and text translation during calls made through a supported phone application. Each participant can speak in their own language while the Galaxy device processes the conversation and presents the translated output. The exact call-app coverage depends on the Galaxy model, software build and region.
Where the translation workload runs
Samsung says the translation engine runs locally on the phone. The call still uses the normal communications network or calling service, but Samsung’s description separates that connection from the translation workload: the translated speech and text are processed by the device’s AI engine rather than sent to a Samsung server for conversion.

How Interpreter works for face-to-face conversations
Split-screen text and spoken output
Interpreter is intended for an in-person exchange. The phone displays a split-screen transcript so each person can read the conversation in their language, and it can audibly speak the translated text. Samsung’s own description is explicit: “For in-person conversations, Interpreter with Galaxy AI can both audibly translate and display a transcript of the conversation all on the phone.”

Offline use after language packs are installed
Interpreter can work without cellular data or Wi‑Fi after the necessary language packs have been downloaded. You need an internet connection for the initial download and for any later pack updates, but an already installed pack allows the translation session itself to run offline. This makes Interpreter useful in places with weak reception, roaming restrictions or no available network.
Using Galaxy Buds
Samsung’s Galaxy AI materials say compatible Galaxy Buds can be used to listen to Interpreter translations. The phone remains the device running the Interpreter function; the earbuds provide an audio listening route. Compatibility can vary by Galaxy phone, Buds model, software version and language.
Galaxy AI is hybrid, so translation is not the whole story
It is misleading to treat “Galaxy AI” as one single cloud or on-device service. Samsung classifies Translation as an on-device capability, while other functions may send work to remote servers. The following distinction is the key to understanding the privacy setting on a Galaxy phone.
| Galaxy AI function | Processing description from Samsung | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Live Translate | On-device AI only | Translation processing for supported calls is performed on the phone. |
| Interpreter | Processed within an on-device AI engine | Face-to-face speech, transcript display and spoken translation can run on the device; offline use is available after language packs are downloaded. |
| Translation generally | Classified by Samsung as on-device | Do not assume that another Galaxy AI feature has the same architecture. |
| Auto-formatting and auto-summarizing | May use cloud processing | Remote processing can be involved, depending on the feature and device configuration. |
| Auto-correction and some image editing | May use cloud processing | Cloud involvement varies; check the feature’s behavior and your settings. |
Samsung provides a Process data only on device control in Galaxy AI settings. Turning it on is the broadest way to prevent Galaxy AI features from using cloud processing, but Samsung warns that restricting cloud access can limit some advanced functions. The switch therefore affects the wider Galaxy AI suite; it is not a special requirement for Live Translate or Interpreter, which Samsung already describes as on-device.

How to keep Galaxy AI processing on the phone
- Check the software and model. Install the latest software available for your Galaxy device, then confirm that Live Translate or Interpreter is listed for your model and region. Samsung says availability varies by phone or tablet, software version, language and location.
- Find the device-only control. Open Settings, use the settings search if necessary, and look for Process data only on device under the Galaxy AI controls. Menu placement and wording can differ by One UI release.
- Enable the control if you want a system-wide restriction. Read the warning before confirming. Features that depend on remote processing may lose options or stop offering their most advanced results.
- Download Interpreter language packs while online. Open Interpreter, choose the languages you need and download the packs before leaving coverage. A successful download is required for the later offline mode.
- Use Interpreter for an in-person exchange. Start Interpreter, select the two conversation languages and position the phone so both speakers can see their side of the split screen. Connect compatible Galaxy Buds if you want to hear the translated audio privately.
- Use Live Translate only in a supported calling context. Start a call through a supported phone app, enable Live Translate and select the languages. If the option is missing, check the device, app, region and language requirements rather than assuming the feature has moved to the cloud.
Privacy: what Samsung says happens to conversation data
Samsung’s stated position is that Live Translate and Interpreter inputs remain on the phone. Samsung also says personal data is not stored long-term or used to train its AI models, including for Galaxy AI features that use remote servers. Those are Samsung claims; they describe the company’s policy and product design rather than an independently verified guarantee.
On-device processing reduces the need to transmit the words being translated to a remote translation service. It does not eliminate every other category of phone data processing. Normal call-network operation, operating-system diagnostics, account services and optional analytics are separate from the translation engine. Review the permissions and privacy controls on your particular Galaxy model if your concern extends beyond translation content.

Language, device and regional limits
On-device processing does not make the feature universal. Samsung’s support information says availability can vary by Galaxy model or tablet, software version, language and region. A language may appear in Samsung’s overall list yet be unavailable on a particular build or in a particular country.
Samsung Mobile Press announced on October 14, 2026 that Live Translate support had expanded to 24 languages. Treat that as Samsung’s announced total, not a promise that all 24 are enabled on every device. Before relying on the feature for travel, work or an emergency conversation, check the language list shown on your phone and install any required language pack.
- Confirm that your exact Galaxy model is supported.
- Install the software version required for the feature.
- Check both directions of the conversation; supported language pairs may differ.
- Verify regional availability and the supported phone application for Live Translate.
- Download Interpreter packs before going offline.
Can Samsung listen to translated conversations?
According to Samsung’s published description, the translated conversation itself is processed within the phone for Live Translate and Interpreter, rather than being sent to Samsung’s cloud for translation. Samsung also says personal data is not retained long-term or used for AI training.
The careful answer is therefore: Samsung says it does not need to receive the conversation audio or text to perform these translations. Because these are vendor statements, readers who need a formally audited guarantee should treat them as Samsung’s declared policy, not as a third-party certification. Also distinguish the translation feature from cloud-dependent Galaxy AI tools, which can have a different data path.

What happens when Interpreter is offline?
After the required language packs are downloaded, Interpreter can translate an in-person conversation without cellular data or Wi‑Fi. The phone still needs enough battery and storage to run the feature, and the selected languages must be installed locally. Offline availability applies to Interpreter; the supplied Samsung documentation does not establish that every Live Translate calling scenario works without a network connection.
If offline Interpreter fails, reconnect to the internet, open the language-pack controls, and check that both packs finished downloading. A partially downloaded or unsupported pack can leave the feature unavailable even though Interpreter itself is installed.
Troubleshooting missing or incomplete translation
The translation button is not shown
- Check the Galaxy model, One UI/software version, region and selected language.
- Update the supported phone app and system software.
- Confirm that you are using a calling app covered by Live Translate rather than an unsupported third-party dialer.
Interpreter will not work without Wi‑Fi
- Reconnect temporarily and download both required language packs.
- Verify that the packs are installed, not merely selected in the language list.
- Try the same language pair online first; an unsupported pair will not become available offline.
Cloud-dependent Galaxy AI functions stop working
If you enabled Process data only on device, a feature that relies on remote processing may lose capabilities. Either keep the restriction and use its on-device options, or revisit the setting when you need the cloud-based function. Changing that control does not alter Samsung’s stated on-device design for Live Translate and Interpreter.
How to evaluate Galaxy AI against another translation service
If you are choosing between translation tools, processing location is only one criterion. Compare the same conditions on both products rather than assuming that a cloud service or an offline engine is automatically better.
| Comparison question | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Where is speech processed? | On-device processing can reduce transmission of conversation content; cloud processing may require a network connection. |
| Can it work offline? | Check whether offline operation requires downloaded language packs and whether it applies to calls, face-to-face speech or only typed text. |
| Which languages and pairs are supported? | Totals can conceal regional, model-specific or direction-specific limits. |
| Which hardware is compatible? | Phone generation, software build, earbuds and calling app can all change availability. |
| What conversations are covered? | Live calls and in-person exchanges are different use cases; support for one does not imply support for the other. |
| What are the retention and training policies? | Read the provider’s specific statements about storage, diagnostics and model training. |
| What evidence exists for quality? | Samsung’s cited materials establish architecture and availability, but they do not provide an independent accuracy percentage or head-to-head test. |
Bottom line
For the two Galaxy AI translation tools covered here, Samsung says the phone does the translation work: Live Translate uses on-device AI for supported calls, and Interpreter processes face-to-face speech on the device and can work offline after language packs are installed. Galaxy AI as a broader platform remains hybrid, so use the Process data only on device control when you want to restrict other AI features as well, and verify model, software, language and regional support before depending on the feature.
