Fitbit trackers and watches can pair with an iPhone through the Google Health app. You need the current app, a Google Account and an iPhone that meets Google’s software requirement. Once paired, you can sync activity, receive phone notifications and, on selected Fitbit models, handle calls from your wrist. The exact health, GPS, battery and calling features depend on the Fitbit model.
What you need to use Fitbit with an iPhone
Google’s current setup documentation supports Fitbit watches and trackers on iPhone. The practical requirements are:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
| Requirement | Current rule or check | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Companion app | Install the Google Health app from the App Store. | Google Health now handles Fitbit setup, syncing and device management. |
| iPhone software | Google lists iOS 16.4 or later as the minimum. | Older iOS versions may not support the current app or its Apple Health connection. |
| Account | A Google Account is required. | Fitbit account users were required to move to a Google Account to continue after the 2026 transition. |
| Wireless and data access | Bluetooth must be enabled, and the phone needs internet access during setup and syncing. | The iPhone uses Bluetooth for the device connection and the app uses the internet to update account data. |
| Exact Fitbit model | Check the model’s own specification page for GPS, health sensors, calls and battery expectations. | Phone compatibility does not mean every Fitbit has the same hardware or features. |
Google’s compatibility documentation also identifies some older phone models that can have problems even when they meet the stated software requirement, including Huawei P8 Lite, Huawei P9 Lite, Xiaomi Mi 6 and Huawei P20 Lite. Those examples are Android phones rather than iPhones, but they illustrate why meeting a version number alone does not guarantee trouble-free operation on every handset.
The 2026 app and account change
Google announced that “starting May 19, 2026, the Fitbit app will become the Google Health app.” Instructions written before that date may still tell you to install or open the Fitbit app, or may refer to a Fitbit account. On an iPhone running the current software, look for Google Health and sign in with your Google Account instead.

The change does not make Fitbit devices Android-only. It changes the name and account system used to manage them. If you have not migrated an older Fitbit account, follow Google’s in-app account prompts before attempting to pair a replacement device.
How to set up a Fitbit on an iPhone
- Install Google Health. Open the App Store, search for Google Health and install the current app published by Google.
- Sign in. Open the app and use the Google Account that will own the Fitbit data. If you previously used a Fitbit account, complete any migration request shown in the app.
- Start device setup. Follow the pairing prompt for a new Fitbit. For an existing account, open the app’s Connections area and choose Add device.
- Keep the Fitbit close. Leave Bluetooth on, keep the tracker or watch near the iPhone and allow the app to communicate with it when prompted.
- Approve permissions. Grant the requested Bluetooth, notification and other device permissions. These permissions determine whether syncing and alerts work after setup.
- Finish the in-app prompts. The app may install device software updates or ask you to configure notifications and other connections. Leave the phone online until setup completes.
- Replace an old Fitbit correctly. If you are swapping a previously paired Fitbit, remove the old device from the iPhone’s Bluetooth device list before pairing the replacement. This prevents the iPhone from trying to reconnect to the retired device.
Google says one account can have one Fitbit device or one Pixel Watch connected at a time. The stated exception is one Fitbit Air together with one Pixel Watch. If setup cannot find a new device, check whether another Fitbit or watch is still connected to the same account or to another phone signed into it.
Features that work after pairing
Syncing, steps and active minutes
The paired device sends recorded information to Google Health over the iPhone connection. Google says every Fitbit device tracks steps and Active Zone Minutes or active minutes. Other core statistics depend on the hardware, so a basic tracker and a smartwatch should not be assumed to measure the same heart-rate, sleep, GPS or exercise data.

Google’s troubleshooting guidance also calls out Background App Refresh, Cellular Data, current app software and current device software. The phone app can record health and fitness information beyond the wearable, but the available metrics depend on the source and permissions.
Calls, texts, calendars and app notifications
Fitbit can mirror notifications that the iPhone itself receives, including incoming calls, text messages, calendar alerts and notifications from other apps. The Fitbit is not an independent cellular notification service: if the iPhone is not receiving an alert, there is nothing for the device to mirror.
On iPhone, notification delivery normally requires all of the following:

Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Incoming-call alerts versus answering on your wrist
There are two different call features, and they are often confused.
- Basic call controls: a paired Fitbit can show an incoming call and let you accept or reject it. In this mode, accepting the call answers it on the nearby iPhone; you cannot speak through the tracker.
- On-wrist voice calls: Google documents this capability for Fitbit Sense, Sense 2, Versa 3 and Versa 4. These models use a built-in speaker and microphone, but the iPhone must remain nearby and Google Health must be running in the background. Google notes that this calling mode requires more frequent charging.
For the second mode, complete the watch’s Bluetooth pairing for its Controls or Calls connection as requested during setup. A watch that only supports basic call alerts cannot be turned into a speakerphone through an app setting.

Apple Health sharing
Google Health can connect with Apple Health on a supported iPhone. Google describes two directions: bringing supported Apple Health information into Google Health and sharing supported Google Health information back to Apple Health.
This is an account-and-permission connection rather than a universal direct Fitbit-to-Apple-Health feed. The data available depends on the connected source and the permissions you approve. Do not assume that every Fitbit metric, workout type or sensor measurement will appear in Apple Health. Review the category-by-category permissions in both apps and remember that Fitbit data is stored in the Google Health account used for the connection.

Choosing a Fitbit for an iPhone requires two separate checks: whether the device can pair with the phone, and whether its hardware provides the measurements you want. The official guidance establishes broad compatibility but does not provide one complete, current feature matrix for every model.
Best Value

| Feature or decision | What is established | What you must verify for the exact model |
|---|---|---|
| Basic activity | Steps and Active Zone Minutes or active minutes are supported across Fitbit devices. | How the model defines, displays and uses additional activity metrics. |
| Heart-rate and sleep data | Not identical across the product range. | Which sensors, sleep measures and reports that model provides. |
| GPS | Capabilities differ by device. | Whether GPS is built in or depends on a connected phone, and which activities are supported. |
| Voice calling | Limited to the four models documented in the calling section above. | Whether the model supports only call alerts or full on-wrist conversations. |
| Charging | Use of on-wrist calling can increase charging frequency. | Advertised battery life, charging method and how your notification, GPS and call use changes it. |
| iPhone support | Google supports setup through Google Health on iPhone. | Any model-specific software, regional or accessory requirements listed by Google. |
If GPS, sleep analysis or calls are your reason for buying, start with that feature and then confirm the phone requirement. Do not infer a feature from the product category alone; two Fitbit watches can have very different sensors and connection behavior.
Fixing common iPhone connection problems
| Symptom | Checks to make |
|---|---|
| The Fitbit will not pair | Confirm the phone meets the current iOS requirement, Bluetooth is on, the Fitbit is nearby, Google Health is installed and you are signed into the intended Google Account. If replacing a device, remove the old Fitbit from the iPhone’s Bluetooth list first. |
| Data is not syncing | Check proximity, Bluetooth and internet access. In iPhone settings, review Background App Refresh and Cellular Data for Google Health. Install available app and device updates. |
| The app finds a different device | Look for another Fitbit or watch connected to the same account, or a second phone or tablet still paired with the device. Google says a Fitbit syncs with one device at a time, so remove the competing connection before retrying. |
| Notifications are missing | Verify that the iPhone app is allowed to send alerts, previews and Notification Center notifications as desired. Then open the Fitbit’s Bluetooth settings and turn on Share System Notifications. |
| Calls appear but cannot be answered from the wrist | Check the model. Basic call controls answer on the iPhone, while voice conversations require one of the documented speaker-and-microphone models, the phone nearby and Google Health running in the background. |
| Apple Health contains only some Fitbit information | Review the source and category permissions in Google Health and Apple Health. The connection supports selected data, not every metric from every Fitbit. |
When a previously reliable connection stops working, work through those checks in order rather than repeatedly pairing the device. Re-pairing while another phone remains connected can preserve the original problem.
What to check before buying or replacing a Fitbit for iPhone
- Confirm the iPhone’s software version. If the phone cannot run the current Google Health app, compatibility ends before the Fitbit model matters.
- Choose the measurements first. Identify whether you need only steps and active minutes, or also specific heart-rate, sleep, GPS or exercise functions.
- Decide how calls should work. If seeing and dismissing a call is enough, basic call alerts may suffice. Speaking through the watch requires one of the documented models and a nearby iPhone.
- Plan for charging. Notification volume, GPS use and on-wrist calls can alter practical battery life; voice calling specifically requires more frequent charging according to Google.
- Account for Apple Health. If Apple Health is central to your workflow, check the categories the exact device and Google Health connection can share rather than assuming a complete data copy.
- Check your other devices. A Fitbit syncs with one device at a time, and another phone or tablet can block setup until its pairing is removed.
The result is a straightforward compatibility decision: an iPhone user can use Fitbit, but the phone connection supplies the platform while the Fitbit model determines the available sensors and controls. Verify both before purchasing.
