Does Disabling Smart TV Tracking Affect Recommendations or Streaming Apps?

Usually, you can turn off a smart TV’s viewing-data tracking without losing access to streaming apps. The main trade-off is at the television level: features that recognize what is playing, find the same program in other services, or suggest related titles may stop working or become less useful. Recommendations inside a signed-in streaming app can continue because that app may use its own account and watch-history data.

The exact result depends on the TV brand, model, software version, country, consent agreements, and the feature you are changing. A setting labeled ACR, Viewing Information Services, Smart TV Experience, or something similar may control only content recognition, or may be grouped with additional connected services.

What smart TV tracking actually does

Most discussions of smart TV tracking concern Automatic Content Recognition (ACR). ACR is a television-platform function, not the same thing as the recommendation engine inside every streaming app.

ACR identifies what appears on the screen

Roku describes ACR as sampling screen pixels, creating an encrypted fingerprint, and checking that fingerprint against a catalog. When there is a match, the television can recognize content arriving from a streaming service, an antenna, or a connected device such as a game console or set-top box. The system is identifying the program or source; it is not simply reading the name of the app you opened.

That identification can power TV-level discovery. Roku’s More Ways to Watch, for example, can identify a program, show services where it is available, list additional episodes, and surface related titles. Roku says ACR must be enabled for that feature.

ACR is only one data layer

Manufacturers describe several other processes separately. LG distinguishes ACR from device discovery, voice recognition, interest-based advertising, and other connected experiences. Samsung separately describes Viewing Information Services and related privacy notices. Turning off one control therefore does not automatically mean that every network request, voice feature, advertising process, or device-discovery function has stopped.

What changes when you disable ACR

TV-home recommendations and discovery can be reduced

The most direct effect is on features that need the television to know what is playing. If ACR is disabled, a TV may no longer identify a show from an antenna input, HDMI device, or supported app for features such as “watch in another app,” episode discovery, or related-title suggestions. Roku explicitly ties More Ways to Watch to an enabled ACR setting.

There is no reliable universal percentage for how much recommendations worsen after opting out. The result depends on which TV interface you use, which sources it can recognize, the catalog match, and whether the home screen has other data available.

Streaming apps usually remain available

Disabling TV-level tracking is not generally the same as uninstalling or blocking streaming apps. LG’s September 2026 guidance says that, in supported markets and subject to the agreements a user accepts, declining optional data-driven services can still leave core functions such as streaming apps, live television, HDMI-connected devices, and software updates available.

That statement is qualified by market, model, software, and consent terms. It is not a promise that every television behaves identically. Before confirming a privacy change, read the explanation on your own set and look for any separate service agreement.

In-app recommendations can continue independently

A signed-in streaming service may personalize its own home screen using account information and viewing history collected by that service. The TV’s ACR setting does not provide a universal switch for those app-level systems. If your concern is a row of suggestions inside an individual app, use that service’s profile, watch-history, privacy, or personalization controls rather than assuming the TV setting controls it.

Platform examples and the controls to look for

Platform documentation What the control covers Effect described by the platform Important qualification
Roku Smart TV Experience ACR can recognize content from streaming, antenna, and connected devices when a catalog match exists. More Ways to Watch requires ACR and can show where a program is available, more episodes, and related titles. The More Ways to Watch support page says the feature is currently supported only in the United States.
Samsung Viewing Information Services Optional viewing information may include programs watched, viewing duration, a personalized service identifier, and IP address. Samsung says users can opt out through TV settings. Samsung’s cited support page does not give one universal menu path for every model. Samsung also says it does not record or watch displayed content; that is the company’s description of its process, not an independent audit.
LG connected-TV settings LG treats ACR separately from device discovery, voice recognition, interest-based advertising, and other connected experiences. In supported markets, optional data-driven services can be declined while streaming apps, live TV, HDMI devices, and software updates remain available. Availability and data sharing, including possible sharing with LG Ad Solutions, depend on market, agreements, and user choices.

How to disable TV-level tracking

Menu labels change with model and region, so use the wording shown on your screen rather than following an old screenshot. The following procedure helps you identify the right control without accidentally disabling a feature you still want.

  1. Open the television’s Settings or All Settings menu. Do this from the TV interface, not from inside a streaming app.
  2. Open Privacy, Terms, or a similarly named section. Some manufacturers place the option under a smart-TV experience, advertising, or connected-services submenu.
  3. Look for the exact feature name. Search for “ACR,” “Automatic Content Recognition,” “Viewing Information Services,” “Smart TV Experience,” “viewing information,” or “interest-based advertising.” These labels are not interchangeable on every model.
  4. Read the explanation before switching it off. Check whether the toggle controls ACR alone or a bundle of optional services, and note any feature named as dependent on it.
  5. Confirm the change and test the functions you use. Open the TV home screen, launch a streaming app, switch to an antenna or HDMI input, and check whether updates still work.

Roku path

Roku’s support documentation places the ACR control at Settings > Privacy > Smart TV Experience. Roku says ACR is off by default before a user makes a selection. If you later disable it, the TV-level More Ways to Watch feature will no longer have the ACR requirement it needs.

Samsung path

Samsung describes Viewing Information Services as optional and says the user can opt out through the TV settings, but it does not publish one menu path that applies to every television. Search the privacy or terms sections for Viewing Information Services and review the data categories shown before confirming.

LG path

LG says ACR can be disabled through TV settings and that optional services can be managed or withdrawn through settings. Because LG’s description is market- and agreement-dependent, verify the consent screen for your country and model instead of assuming that every connected feature is controlled by one switch.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does switching tracking off delete data already collected?

Not necessarily. Roku expressly says that information collected or used while ACR was enabled will be retained after the setting is disabled. Turning off the toggle therefore changes future participation in that feature but does not, on Roku’s stated policy, erase the historical data automatically.

Do not apply Roku’s retention statement to every manufacturer. Samsung and LG describe their controls and data practices differently, and the cited material does not establish one universal deletion rule. If deletion is your goal, look for a separate privacy-request, account-management, or data-deletion process in the manufacturer’s policy for your region.

What disabling ACR does not guarantee

  • It does not guarantee that all telemetry stops. ACR can be separate from voice recognition, device discovery, advertising, diagnostics, and software-update traffic.
  • It does not control every app’s personalization. A streaming service may continue using its own account and viewing-history data.
  • It does not guarantee that previously collected records are erased. Roku explicitly describes retention after opt-out.
  • It does not produce the same result on every model. Menus, agreements, supported features, and regional rules vary.

Use the right setting for the recommendation you want to change

If the TV home screen is the problem

Disable the ACR or viewing-information control, then test the home screen and any “watch elsewhere,” episode, or related-title panels. You may lose recognition-based discovery while retaining ordinary app launching and live-TV functions.

If a streaming app’s suggestions are the problem

Open that service’s account or profile settings and look for viewing-history, personalization, autoplay, or recommendation controls. The TV’s ACR switch is not documented as a universal control for third-party app algorithms.

If advertising is the concern

Check for a separate interest-based advertising or personalized-ads setting. LG identifies advertising as a distinct data layer, and Samsung’s viewing-information description is also separate from a blanket promise about all advertising or diagnostics.

Common failure modes and fixes

“I turned off tracking and a TV feature disappeared.”

Check whether the missing feature explicitly requires ACR. Roku’s More Ways to Watch is one documented example. If you need that feature, you may have to re-enable ACR; if privacy is more important, use the search and browse tools inside the individual apps instead.

“My apps still recommend shows.”

That is expected when the app has its own account and watch-history data. Review the app’s controls separately. ACR opt-out affects the television platform’s recognition layer, not necessarily the service’s own personalization.

“The option is missing from my menu.”

Confirm the TV’s country, software version, and account region, then search the privacy, terms, advertising, and connected-services sections. A manufacturer may rename the control or present it during initial setup. Older instructions may not match a current interface.

“The TV still contacts network services.”

Do not treat that as proof that ACR is still active. Other functions can generate traffic, including updates, diagnostics, voice features, device discovery, advertising, and app activity. The ACM Internet Measurement Conference paper published in 2024 examined ACR traffic on Samsung and LG televisions in US and UK test scenarios and shows why ACR should be analyzed separately from every other network request; it does not establish that disabling ACR stops all traffic.

What older investigations can—and cannot—tell you

An FTC staff presentation from 2017 summarized an investigation of five televisions: LG, Samsung, Vizio, Sony, and TCL/Roku. It reported that all five offered settings controls to limit viewing-data collection, while noting that the controls could be difficult to find. The presentation also described a possible functionality trade-off when collection was limited.

That material is historical. It should not be used as a current menu guide or as proof that every present-day model behaves like those five sets. The same presentation records a $1.5 million Federal Trade Commission settlement announced in February 2017 concerning Vizio’s collection of viewing activity without consent. That figure belongs to that historical settlement and is not a current fine or a finding about the other manufacturers.

A practical privacy checklist

  • Identify whether the setting says ACR, Viewing Information Services, Smart TV Experience, or something else.
  • Read whether the toggle covers only content recognition or also advertising and other connected services.
  • Note which TV features require the setting, especially content-identification and “watch elsewhere” tools.
  • Keep the TV’s home-screen controls separate from each streaming service’s account controls.
  • Check the manufacturer’s data-retention and deletion terms if you need past records removed.
  • Revisit the setting after a major software update or when moving the TV to another country.

The Bottom Line

For most owners, disabling smart TV tracking means giving up some TV-level content recognition and discovery—not losing streaming apps. Turn off ACR if reducing television-platform viewing collection matters more than features such as automatic program matching or related-title suggestions. Manage recommendations inside each streaming service separately, and do not assume that opting out erases old data or stops every form of TV telemetry.
