Yes. For the 2025 tax year, Coinbase says it issues Form 1099-DA to U.S. customers with qualifying digital-asset sales or exchanges and reports the form’s information to the IRS. The form reports gross proceeds—not your complete taxable gain. You still need to report relevant income, gains, or losses even if you do not receive a form. This article covers U.S. federal tax reporting; your tax outcome depends on your circumstances.

What Coinbase reports—and what the form does not tell you

Coinbase’s Form 1099-DA guidance says its 2025 form reports gross proceeds from qualifying sales or exchanges. Coinbase says the form is due to customers no later than March 17, 2026. Gross proceeds are the total value from reportable transactions, not the amount left after subtracting what you paid for the assets. Coinbase explains that the figure is “not your net gain or balance,” and can include small trades. Coinbase’s Form 1099-DA guidance

To work out a gain or loss, you generally need to compare the proceeds with your basis—the amount used to determine your investment cost for tax purposes—and account for the transaction’s other relevant details. For each asset, the IRS identifies information such as acquisition date and time, units, and U.S.-dollar fair market value as useful for determining basis. IRS digital asset guidance

A 1099-DA is broker reporting; it is not a complete tax return or a determination that you owe tax. The IRS says taxpayers must report related income, gains, or losses whether or not they receive the form. IRS reminder for taxpayers about digital assets, January 28, 2026

What counts as a reportable Coinbase sale?

Coinbase says its 1099-DA “sale” category includes crypto-to-crypto exchanges, crypto-to-fiat conversions, and other digital-asset dispositions that generate proceeds. That description concerns Coinbase’s reporting; the right tax treatment depends on what happened and your facts. Coinbase Form 1099-DA guidance

For federal tax purposes, the IRS directs taxpayers who dispose of digital assets held as capital assets to Form 8949. A sale or exchange can require tax reporting even when the broker’s statement does not show a taxable gain. You must determine the result using your records rather than treating the proceeds figure as profit. IRS digital asset guidance

How 1099-DA reporting changes from 2025 to 2026

Tax year What the reporting covers What to check
2025 activity, reported in 2026 Coinbase says its form reports gross proceeds for qualifying sales or exchanges, without basis. Coinbase gives March 17, 2026 as its customer delivery deadline. Separately, the IRS’s January 28, 2026 reminder says brokers must furnish statements by February 17, 2026; Coinbase’s stated date is a Coinbase-specific customer date. Use your own acquisition and transfer records to determine basis and gain or loss.
2026 activity and later The IRS phases in basis reporting for certain transactions starting January 1, 2026. Coinbase says its Form 1099-DA will include basis information for certain covered assets beginning with tax year 2026. Check whether an asset is covered and whether reported basis is complete. Assets transferred in or outside the covered definition may not have broker-reported basis.

The IRS rules apply to brokers taking possession of digital assets, including custodial trading platforms, certain hosted wallet providers, kiosks, and certain digital-asset payment processors. The final rules do not include decentralized or noncustodial brokers that do not take possession. That boundary concerns broker reporting; it does not cancel a taxpayer’s separate obligation to report taxable activity. A Coinbase tax form may not cover all your crypto activity

Coinbase says its retail Coinbase Taxes service does not include Coinbase Wallet or legacy Coinbase Pro transactions. Coinbase says Pro records remain accessible through account statements until 2027. Activity on other exchanges, wallets, or platforms also needs to be considered when you assemble your tax records. For assets transferred into Coinbase, do not assume the platform has your original purchase details. Coinbase Exchange guidance says proceeds may be reported while basis is marked noncovered; customers remain responsible for tracking and calculating basis. Coinbase Exchange Form 1099-DA guidance

Which tax form may apply to your crypto activity?

The form depends on the kind of activity—not simply on whether Coinbase sent a 1099-DA.

  • Capital-asset disposal: If you sold, exchanged, or otherwise disposed of digital assets held as capital assets, the IRS directs you to Form 8949. IRS digital asset guidance
  • Staking, mining, or certain other income: The IRS identifies ordinary digital-asset income such as staking or mining as reportable on Schedule 1. IRS digital asset guidance
  • Wages paid in digital assets: The IRS says these are reported on Form 1040. IRS digital asset guidance
  • Independent-contractor payments or sales to customers: These may be reported on Schedule C, depending on the activity. IRS digital asset guidance

These categories can involve different tax treatment. A broker statement does not replace the work of identifying what kind of income or transaction you had.

How to reconcile Coinbase information before filing

  1. Download Coinbase forms and reports. Review the 1099-DA and transaction records available for your account. Coinbase tax report and download guidance
  2. Gather records from every relevant account and wallet. Include Coinbase Wallet, legacy Coinbase Pro, other exchanges, and self-custody activity that is not reflected in the retail Coinbase Taxes report.
  3. Rebuild missing basis information. Match each disposal to acquisition and transfer records, including acquisition date and time, units, and U.S.-dollar fair market value where available. Investigate transferred-in or noncovered assets rather than treating missing basis as zero. IRS digital asset guidance Coinbase Exchange Form 1099-DA guidance
  4. Match each event to its tax category. Distinguish capital disposals from staking or mining income, wages, and contractor payments; they may belong on different forms. IRS digital asset guidance
  5. Check personal details on the form. Coinbase’s instructions say to contact Coinbase support to correct a listed name, taxpayer ID, or state. Separately verify the transaction amounts against your records. Coinbase Form 1099-DA guidance

Coinbase says users seeking a Form 8949 may obtain it through CoinTracker, but tax software can only organize and calculate from the information supplied; it does not replace complete source records or review. Coinbase tax report and download guidance
