Yes—on iPhone, Apple’s “Clear History and Website Data” action removes Safari history and associated website data, including cookies, for the timeframe you choose. AutoFill information is not changed. When Safari is set up with iCloud, clearing history on a Mac also removes that synced history from your other Apple devices. It does not clear histories stored independently by websites or in other apps.
What does “Clear History and Website Data” remove?
On iPhone, Apple’s Clear History and Website Data control removes Safari browsing history and associated website data for the timeframe you select. Website data includes information such as cookies and cached site content. Apple says the action does not change AutoFill information.

Because cookies and other site data can preserve login state and preferences, clearing them may mean a website no longer recognizes you and asks you to sign in again. The exact effect depends on the site and which timeframe you clear.
How to clear history and website data on iPhone
- Open Settings > Apps > Safari.
- Tap Clear History and Website Data.
- Choose the timeframe, then confirm the action.
If the control is unavailable or dimmed, Apple says there may be no data to clear, or Screen Time web-content restrictions may be enabled.

Can you clear cookies and cache but keep history?
Yes. Apple documents a separate iPhone control for that purpose: Settings > Apps > Safari > Advanced > Website Data > Remove All Website Data. It removes website data, including cookies and cache, while leaving browsing history in place. Sites may forget saved login information, so you might need to sign in again.
| iPhone control | Browsing history | Website data, cookies, and cache | When to use it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Clear History and Website Data | Removed for the chosen timeframe | Removed for the chosen timeframe | When you want to clear history and related site data together |
| Remove All Website Data | Kept | Removed | When you want to clear site data without clearing history |
Does clearing Safari history on one device delete it from iCloud and your other devices?
If iCloud is set up for Safari on your Mac and other Apple devices, expect a history deletion to sync across them. Apple’s Mac Safari guide says clearing history removes it from all devices with Safari iCloud set up. Apple also explains that Safari data, including history, syncs across devices and that changes made on one device appear on the others in its iCloud guide. In other words, synced iCloud history is not a separate archive that remains after you delete the synced history.

What Safari clearing does not delete
- Independent website records: Clearing Safari does not clear browsing histories that websites keep on their own systems.
- Other apps’ histories: Safari’s controls do not clear activity stored by other apps.
- Every account-level or server-side record: Apple’s guidance does not establish that clearing Safari deletes every record associated with an Apple Account or held on a server. Do not treat it as a guarantee of broader account-data deletion.
Apple also notes that clearing Safari’s list of downloads on Mac does not remove the downloaded files themselves; removing the list and deleting a file are separate actions. See Apple’s Mac Safari guide.

Is blocking all cookies the same as clearing history?
No. Blocking all cookies is a separate Safari setting, not the history-clearing action. Apple says enabling it removes existing cookies and website data, and warns that some sites may not let you sign in or may not work as expected. If your goal is simply to remove browsing history, use the history controls instead. Apple’s iPhone instructions describe the cookie setting and its possible effects.

Which option should you choose?
- Choose Clear History and Website Data if you want to remove Safari history and related site data for a selected timeframe.
- Choose Remove All Website Data if you want to clear cookies and cache but preserve your history.
- If you need to remove activity from a website account or another app, use that service’s own privacy or history controls; Safari’s clear action does not reach those independent records.
