Chrome’s Energy Saver is the setting designed to reduce battery use, but the available evidence does not establish that changing one setting will add two hours to a laptop’s runtime. The result depends on the computer, Chrome version, and what you do in the browser.
Where to find Energy Saver in Chrome
- Open Chrome on a supported Windows, Mac, or Chromebook computer with a battery.
- Select the three-dot menu, then Settings.
- Open Performance and find Energy Saver.
- Choose the behavior offered in your version of Chrome. Depending on the available controls, Energy Saver can operate when the computer is unplugged or when its battery is low. Google’s Chrome Help page describes the current setting and its behavior.
What Energy Saver changes
Google says Energy Saver reduces image capture rates and other background tasks. The goal is to reduce work Chrome does while running on battery, not to guarantee a fixed extension to runtime. The feature does not turn on while the computer is plugged in, according to Chrome Help.

Google’s December 2022 launch announcement described the feature activating when a device’s battery reached 20%, limiting background activity and visual effects on websites with animations and videos. That was a dated launch description, not evidence that every current Chrome release uses a universal 20% threshold. In that announcement, Chrome product manager Mark Chang wrote: “When you’re browsing the Web with Chrome and your device battery level reaches 20%, Chrome will save battery by limiting background activity and visual effects for websites with animations and videos.” Google’s announcement also said its desktop performance settings could reduce memory use by up to 40%; that figure is about memory, not battery life.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteSome background tabs can be frozen
Starting with Chrome 133, released in February 2025, eligible CPU-intensive background tabs can be frozen while Energy Saver is active. Chrome for Developers says affected tabs must have been hidden and silent for more than five minutes and meet CPU-use criteria. Conferencing and some device-control or background functions are excluded; this does not mean every inactive tab is frozen. Chrome for Developers explains the eligibility rules.

Energy Saver is not Memory Saver
These controls address different resources. Energy Saver targets battery use by reducing some visual and background work. Memory Saver deactivates tabs that are not currently in use to free memory; selecting an inactive tab reloads it. A memory-use improvement does not translate directly into a battery-runtime gain.
What you may notice while it is on
Reducing visual effects and background work can affect performance. Google cautions that gaming and video may feel different. Background tab updates or other activity may also need to resume; Chrome Help describes an option to turn Energy Saver off temporarily for a session. If a video, game, conference, or background task behaves unexpectedly, check the Energy Saver controls available in your Chrome version rather than assuming the feature is broken.

Does one Chrome setting really save two hours?
There is no device, Chrome version, workload, test method, or before-and-after battery reading attached to the two-hour claim, so it cannot be independently verified or treated as a typical result. Google reported a different figure in 2020: up to 1.25 hours of extended battery life in internal benchmarks after Chrome began prioritizing active tabs. That historical benchmark concerned a different change, not Energy Saver, and does not validate a two-hour gain on an individual laptop. Google’s 2020 account describes that work.
The phrase “turned off one setting” is also unclear: Google describes turning Energy Saver on to extend battery life. Without knowing which setting was changed, it would be inaccurate to claim that disabling a particular Chrome option caused the reported result. To assess a personal gain, compare battery runtime under similar conditions before and after the change, keeping the workload and power settings consistent.
