Yes—but in different ways. ChatGPT Memory can use available personal context to tailor replies, while a separate Data Controls setting governs whether eligible conversations on personal accounts may be used to improve OpenAI models. Sharing a chat link is another separate issue: anyone with a personal-account link can view the shared content. Changing one control does not automatically change the others.
What ChatGPT Memory does—and what it can use
Memory is a personalization feature, not a record of every detail you have ever shared. Depending on your plan, region, account and enabled features, ChatGPT may draw on saved memories, relevant context from past chats, custom instructions, Library files or connected apps. The information available to Memory and the controls shown can vary between accounts.
Review the options at Settings → Personalization → Memory. Depending on availability, you may see controls such as Memory, Reference saved memories, Reference chat history, Manage, or a memory summary. OpenAI describes these features in its Memory in ChatGPT guide.
Turning Memory off is not the same as deleting old conversations. If your goal is to remove saved information or chat records, use the relevant memory-management or chat-deletion controls; disabling personalization alone does not erase chat history.

Does Memory affect model training?
Memory and model improvement are separate controls. For personal accounts, OpenAI may use eligible conversations and remembered information to improve its models when Improve the model for everyone is on. To stop new personal-account conversations from being used for model improvement, go to Settings → Data controls → Improve the model for everyone and turn it off. This setting does not delete saved chats.
OpenAI’s Data controls in ChatGPT documentation distinguishes these functions: “Memory controls how ChatGPT personalizes responses. Model-training controls determine whether eligible content can be used to improve OpenAI models.” Its model-performance data-use guidance explains the use of personal-service content and the opt-out. Feedback submitted after opting out may allow the associated conversation to be used for model improvement.

Managed workspaces have different defaults and may have organization-level policies. OpenAI says content in Business, Enterprise, Edu and ChatGPT for Healthcare workspaces is not used to train models by default, but workspace administrators can set policies. Check your organization’s rules or ask its administrator rather than assuming personal-account settings apply.
What Temporary Chat changes
Temporary Chat changes how a conversation uses and creates personal context, but it is not a promise that no information is retained for any reason.

- Unpersonalized Temporary Chat: does not use Memory, custom instructions or plugins.
- Personalized Temporary Chat: may use existing memories.
- Both modes: do not create or update memories, and are not used for model improvement while temporary.
- Retention: OpenAI says a Temporary Chat may be retained for up to 30 days for safety. That is a possible maximum, not a statement that every chat is kept for the full period. Limited safety and security context may still be used.
Choose Unpersonalized before sending the first message if you do not want existing personal context used. The choice cannot be changed after the conversation starts, and account or workspace restrictions still apply. Saving a Temporary Chat converts it to a regular chat under the account settings. What happens when you share a chat
A shared link can expose the conversation itself, independently of your Memory and model-improvement settings. For personal accounts, anyone who has the link can view the shared content; the link is not restricted to a named recipient and has no configurable expiry. Supported images and uploaded files may be included. Memory Sources themselves are not placed in the link, but personal details written in the conversation may be visible.

Before creating or sending a link, inspect its preview and consider who could receive it if it is forwarded. You can manage or delete links at Settings → Data controls → Shared links. Deleting a link stops future access through that link, but it cannot remove copies a recipient has already saved. OpenAI’s sharing conversations and scheduled tasks guidance distinguishes personal-account links from workspace sharing, which is generally limited to eligible members of the originating workspace.

OpenAI’s Help Center describes product behavior, but controls and availability can vary by plan, region, platform and workspace. For managed accounts, consult the organization’s retention, access, Memory and sharing policies as well as the relevant settings.
