Available evidence points to ChatGPT as the heaviest news citer among ChatGPT, Gemini and Claude in one comparison—but that finding comes from Muck Rack research reported by Axios, not from the Semrush studies reviewed here. The often-quoted 49% figure applies to objective queries across the Muck Rack study; it is not a ChatGPT-only rate or a measure of every ChatGPT response.
What the comparison actually found
On July 24, 2025, Axios reported results from Muck Rack, which analyzed more than one million realistic prompts submitted to ChatGPT, Gemini and Claude. The prompts covered advice and opinions, factual searches, current-event updates, comparisons, instructions, brainstorming, and creative or task-completion requests.

Axios described ChatGPT as the heaviest user of news citations among the three assistants and named Reuters, the Associated Press, the Financial Times, Time and Axios among the outlets cited. But the report summary does not provide a ChatGPT-only news citation rate. Its 49% figure is for objective queries seeking recent updates or facts across the study, not for all ChatGPT answers: Axios’s account of the Muck Rack study.

A result for a particular prompt category cannot establish how often ChatGPT cites news in every kind of conversation, nor does a cross-assistant ranking disclose the size of the gap between assistants.

Does Semrush support the headline’s attribution?
The Semrush studies described in the available evidence do not establish that ChatGPT cites news sites more than other AI platforms. They examine citation patterns and frequently cited domains across platforms and topics, rather than a direct comparison of news citations among ChatGPT, Gemini and Claude.
One Semrush study analyzed more than 230,000 prompts across ChatGPT Search, Google AI Mode and Perplexity, using 13 weekly snapshots from July 14 to October 12, 2025, and examining more than 100 million citations. It found that ChatGPT citations to Reddit and Wikipedia fell sharply in mid-September, although both remained among its most-cited domains as of October. That is evidence that citation patterns shift over time—not that news outlets outrank other source types: Semrush’s three-month study of cited domains.
Rank #2
A separate Semrush analysis covered finance, digital technology, business services, consumer electronics and fashion, comparing ChatGPT with Google AI Mode. It reported Wikipedia citation frequency of 167.08% in ChatGPT digital-technology responses and Reddit citation frequency of 176.89% in ChatGPT finance queries. These are frequencies, not shares of all citations: a figure above 100% means the source appeared more than once per prompt on average in that measured set. The figures concern Wikipedia and Reddit, not news-site rankings: Semrush’s analysis of AI citation patterns.
Accordingly, the careful reading is: Axios reported a Muck Rack finding that ChatGPT was the heaviest news citer in a three-assistant comparison; the Semrush findings cited here offer useful context about changing AI citation patterns but do not independently verify that specific ranking.

Why the percentages are easy to misread
The Muck Rack figures reported by Axios describe different denominators. The 49% rate concerns objective queries seeking facts or recent updates. Separately, 27% of inquiries cited news stories produced by journalistic entities, while 37% cited external corporate blogs or content. Those source-category figures should not be treated as alternative versions of the 49% result: they describe different categories and denominators.
“Citation frequency” also differs from “share of citations.” Semrush’s figures above 100% count appearances per prompt on average; they do not mean that more than 100% of citations came from a source. And a citation appearing in an answer is not evidence that the answer is complete, correct or fresh.
Rank #4
These studies also examine different assistants, modes, prompt sets and periods. A result for ChatGPT Search is not automatically a result for every ChatGPT experience, and a finding from 2025 should not be presented as a timeless ranking. For any percentage, check which prompts were used, what counted as a news source, and whether the number measures prompts, answers or citations.

A news citation does not guarantee the latest or correct story
A 2024 Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism experiment illustrates the gap between citing news and retrieving it successfully. Researchers asked ChatGPT Enterprise with GPT-4 and Google Bard for the five current headlines from specified outlets across ten countries. Across 4,500 headline requests, 15 outlets and three waves, ChatGPT returned no news-like response for 54% of requests. Only 8% of all requests produced headlines referring to one of the requested outlet’s top five stories at that moment.
Best Value
In the same experiment, 30% of requests produced stories from the requested outlet that were not among its current top stories; some were older. The researchers also found misattribution in a small portion of outputs. These results describe a narrow, tightly specified task using older systems in 2024, so they do not measure current ChatGPT citation behavior. They do show why the presence of a news link is not the same as reliable latest-news retrieval: Reuters Institute’s experiment on news accuracy and trust.

Muck Rack’s Generative Pulse page says that it has prompted AI systems more than 25 million times since July 2025 and that 84% of citations in AI answers come from earned media. These are vendor-reported rolling aggregates on a page accessed October 13, 2026. The page does not specify a ChatGPT-only news citation rate, a sampling frame or a source breakdown on its face. The figures therefore cannot replace the more specific three-assistant comparison Axios reported, or be read as proof that 84% of ChatGPT citations are news stories: Muck Rack’s Generative Pulse.
Quick Recap
How to judge an AI news-citation claim
- Identify the source and study. The three-assistant news comparison was Muck Rack research reported by Axios; the Semrush work cited here examines broader citation patterns.
- Check the prompt type. The 49% figure is for objective queries seeking facts or recent updates, not every prompt.
- Check the denominator. A percentage of prompts, a share of citations and citation appearances per prompt are different measures.
- Check the date and product mode. Models, search features and source mixes can change; a dated study is not a live performance guarantee.
- Open the cited story. Confirm its date, outlet and relevance before relying on an AI summary for breaking news.
