Does Changing iPhone Icons Affect App Notifications or Updates?

No. Changing an iPhone icon’s appearance does not uninstall the app, disable its notifications, or stop it receiving updates. The important exception is that a custom image created with Shortcuts is a separate Home Screen shortcut, and Apple’s instructions do not promise that this shortcut tile will mirror the original app’s notification badge. The app itself remains the item that sends alerts and receives updates.

First, identify which kind of icon change you made

“Changing an icon” can describe three different actions. They have different effects because one changes only the Home Screen’s appearance, one adds a shortcut, and one is performed by the app’s developer in a software release.

Built-in Home Screen appearance controls

On current iOS, the Home Screen’s Customize controls let you alter icon size, choose a light or dark appearance, apply a clear appearance, or tint the icons. These are display settings applied to the Home Screen. They do not replace the installed application or alter its notification permission, update channel, data, or account.

Apple documents these controls in Customize apps and widgets on the iPhone Home Screen. Because the control changes how the icon is rendered, an app can continue sending alerts and updating normally after you change the style.

A custom-photo tile made with Shortcuts

Shortcuts can add an item to the Home Screen and let you choose a photo from Photos or Files for that item’s icon. The result is a shortcut tile that launches an action, commonly opening the underlying app. It is not the app’s own icon asset.

That distinction matters for badges. Apple’s Add a shortcut to the Home Screen on iPhone or iPad instructions explain how to choose the photo and place the shortcut, but they do not explicitly establish that the custom tile mirrors the underlying app’s notification badge. You should therefore treat badge display on that tile as unconfirmed rather than guaranteed.

An icon changed by the app developer

A developer changing the official icon is a release operation, not a personal Home Screen customization. Apple says an app icon used in system locations, including notifications, is supplied as part of the app’s published version. To change that shipped icon, the developer creates and uploads a new app version and submits it for review through App Store Connect. The process is described in Add an app icon.

A new developer-supplied icon can arrive with an update because it is included in that new version. That is separate from changing the way your existing icon looks or adding a Shortcuts tile.

What happens to notifications?

Alerts are controlled by the installed app

Notifications are generated by the installed app and governed by iPhone notification permissions, Focus and other system conditions. A tint, size, light/dark choice, or clear appearance does not switch those permissions off. Likewise, adding a Home Screen shortcut does not convert the underlying app into a different installation.

If an alert stops after an icon change, do not assume the image caused it. Open the notification controls for the real app in Settings and verify that notifications are allowed and that the alert types you use—such as Lock Screen, Notification Center, banners, sounds, or badges—are enabled. Also check Notification Center, since an alert may have arrived without remaining visible as a banner.

Badges are a separate visual signal

A badge is the number or marker shown on an app location. Its visibility can differ depending on where the app is represented. Removing an app from the Home Screen does not delete it: the app can remain installed in App Library.

Apple’s Find and use your apps in App Library on iPhone guide includes a “Show in App Library” control for notification badges. If you rely on badges and have moved an app off the Home Screen, check that setting so the badge can appear on the App Library representation.

Do not assume a Shortcuts tile shows the app badge

The official Shortcuts procedure confirms that a custom-photo tile can be added, but it does not state that the tile inherits the app’s badge. A missing number on that tile is therefore not proof that notifications are disabled. Check the underlying app’s notification settings and Notification Center, and keep or restore the original app icon if seeing the badge directly on the Home Screen is important to you.

What happens to app updates?

Changing the built-in Home Screen appearance is not an installation or update action. Creating a Shortcuts tile is also not an update action; it adds a launcher to the Home Screen. In both cases, the actual app remains installed in the normal way and can receive updates through the App Store.

Be careful not to confuse removing a tile with deleting the app. Removing an icon from the Home Screen can leave the app in App Library. Deleting the app itself is a separate command and removes the installed application; an icon style change does not perform that command.

If the developer changes the official icon, the change may be delivered as part of a new app version. Apple’s publication process requires that new version to be uploaded and reviewed, so the developer’s icon change is tied to a release rather than to anything you do in Home Screen customization.

How to check your setup when alerts or badges seem different

  1. Identify the icon type. Decide whether you used Home Screen Customize controls, added a photo-based Shortcuts tile, removed the original icon to App Library, or installed a developer’s new app version. This determines which behavior can reasonably change.
  2. Confirm that the real app is installed. Search App Library for the app. If it opens from App Library, it is still installed even if its original Home Screen icon is gone. If it is absent, check the App Store before troubleshooting notifications.
  3. Review the app’s notification permission. In Settings, open the notification controls for the underlying app. Confirm that notifications are allowed and that the desired delivery locations and badge option are enabled. These settings belong to the app, not to the picture used for a shortcut.
  4. Look in Notification Center. Pull up Notification Center and check whether messages arrived there. A missing banner or Home Screen number does not necessarily mean the app generated no notification.
  5. Check App Library badge visibility. If the app was removed from the Home Screen, verify the “Show in App Library” option described by Apple. This controls whether badges are displayed for apps represented there.
  6. Test the original icon when badge visibility matters. If you are using a Shortcuts tile and cannot see a badge, restore the app’s original Home Screen icon temporarily. Apple’s Shortcuts documentation does not guarantee badge mirroring on the custom tile, so this test separates a tile-display limitation from an app-notification problem.
  7. Check for the normal app update. Open the App Store and view the app’s update status. A Home Screen appearance change does not block an update; if an update is unavailable, investigate the usual App Store, network, storage, account, or compatibility conditions rather than the icon image.

Common situations and the correct interpretation

What you did What changed What did not change What to check if something seems missing
Changed icon tint, size, light/dark style, or clear appearance How the Home Screen draws the icon The installed app, its permissions, alerts, and update eligibility The app’s notification settings and Notification Center
Added a custom photo with Shortcuts A separate Home Screen shortcut tile and its chosen image or name The underlying app’s installation and ability to update Whether the real app is installed; do not assume the shortcut tile mirrors a badge
Removed the original icon from the Home Screen Where you launch the app from The app can remain installed in App Library “Show in App Library” for badge visibility
Installed a developer’s release with a new official icon The icon asset shipped in that app version, including system locations where applicable This is not the same as your personal Home Screen customization The app’s version and the developer’s release notes if you need to know what changed

Why the distinction matters for notification badges

Notifications and badges are related but not identical. An app can deliver an alert to Notification Center even when no number is visible on the particular icon representation you are looking at. The representation might be the original app icon, an App Library entry, or a Shortcuts tile, and Apple documents different behavior for those locations.

For App Library, Apple explicitly provides a badge-visibility setting. For a Shortcuts-created custom tile, the cited Apple instructions stop at creating and customizing the shortcut; they do not promise that the tile will display the underlying app’s badge. That is why restoring the original icon is the most dependable practical check when badge visibility is essential.

When an icon change really can be related to an update

The only direct connection between an icon and an update in this topic is a developer’s release. The developer supplies the icon as part of the app package, and changing the published icon requires a new version submission and review. Once that version is approved and installed, the official icon can change in system locations that use the app’s asset.

That release path should not be confused with selecting a tint, applying a clear appearance, or making a shortcut. Those user actions do not edit the app package, submit anything for review, or create an update.

Bottom line for everyday use

Keep the actual app installed and use Home Screen customization freely: visual changes do not stop alerts or updates. If you use a Shortcuts tile, regard it as a launcher with a custom image, not as a guaranteed replacement for every behavior of the original app icon. For missing alerts, inspect the real app’s notification permission and Notification Center. For missing badges, check App Library’s “Show in App Library” setting and, when necessary, restore the original icon because badge mirroring on a custom shortcut tile is not established by Apple’s instructions.
